Kandy, Aug 31 (Ians) Sri Lanka opened their Asia Cup campaign with a convincing five-wicket victory over Bangladesh in their Group B match at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium on Thursday.

New Delhi, Aug 30 (Ians) Bangladesh pacer Ebadot Hossein has been ruled out of the upcoming World Cup 2023 due to a knee injury. The star bowler already missed the Asia Cup 2023 and now misses yet another mega event.
The Bangladesh Cricket Board (Bcb) chief selector, Minhajul Abedin told Cricbuzz on Wednesday that “He (Ebadot) will not be available for us in the World Cup.”
“It’s a big blow for us as he will require an operation for his knee. Following the operation he will certainly take some time for rehabilitation purposes, at least three to four months, so we cannot consider him for the World Cup,” he added.
The star pacer suffered an Anterior Cruciate Ligament (Acl) injury during last month’s Odi series against Afghanistan.
As reported earlier, Ebadot is up against the given time to get fit for the World Cup and now gets ruled out of the...

Sylhet, March 20 (Ians) Rain resulted in a washout of the second Odi between Bangladesh and Ireland in Sylhet after Mushfiqur Rahim slammed the fastest century by a batter from the hosts in the format, which in turn propelled them to post their highest-ever Odi total in 349/6, breaking the record of 338 they set in the first match of the series on Saturday.

Chattogram, March 6 (Ians) A brilliant all-rounder performance by seasoned Shakib Al Hasan, who claimed his 300th Odi wicket during a haul of 4-35 after hitting 71-ball 75, helped Bangladesh defend a modest 246 for a 50-run win against England here on Monday.
Bangladesh had already lost the series after losing the first two ODIs before salvaging some pride by winning the third match.
The home side may have lost their first Odi series since 2016, but the Asian Tigers must be relieved to have avoided a whitewash in their own den, with Sri Lanka having inflicted the last one in 2014.
Shakib scored 75, hitting seven fours, while wicketkeeper Mushfiqur Rahim contributed 70 and Najmul Hossain Shanto added 53 as Bangladesh were shot out for 246 in 48.5 overs.
Shakib then returned to fox the English batters with his spin bowling, claiming 4-35 as England were bundled out for 196 in 43.1 overs as the hosts won by 50 runs.

There’s the gig economy, and then there’s a homeless day laborer being asked to play Adolf Hitler in a Holocaust drama. Such is the plight of Shakib (Mohsen Tanabandeh) in Houman Seyedi’s “World War III,” Iran’s submission for the international feature Oscar. It wasn’t shortlisted, but probably would have been were the award given to the film with the greatest ability to keep you guessing as to what form its narrative will eventually take. For that premise, as odd and even zany as it may sound, gives approximately zero indication of how genuinely strange, unexpected and upsetting so much of what happens in “World War III” ultimately is.
Shakib has never acted before and doesn’t resemble Hitler in the slightest, but everyone’s journey to stardom is different. Initially hired to help build and guard the film’s sets — including one of a gas chamber,...

D0haka, Dec 25 (Ians) After the three-wicket loss to India in the second Test at Dhaka on Sunday, Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan was left to rue missed chances made during the fielding in the match.
At the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium, Bangladesh missed three catches and a stumping in India’s first innings when Rishabh Pant and Shreyas Iyer came together for an important 159-run stand for the fifth wicket.
On Day Four, Mominul Haque dropped a regulation catching chance of Ravichandran Ashwin at short leg, which turned out to be a crucial turning point as the right-hander shared an unbeaten 71-run stand with Shreyas Iyer as India secured a 2-0 series sweep.
“It is slightly disappointing, as other teams don’t miss the chances that we are missing. Those made the difference. We could have bowled them out for 250 instead of 314 (in the first innings). There was a...

Dhaka, Dec 25 (Ians) A magnificent unbeaten 71-run partnership off 105 balls between Ravichandran Ashwin and Shreyas Iyer took India out from jaws to defeat and steered the visitors’ to a three-wicket victory over Bangladesh in the second Test at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium on Sunday.
On day four, India were needing 100 runs with six wickets in hand. But Shakib Al Hasan and Mehidy Hasan Miraz took three wickets in the first hour to leave India in spot of bother at 74/7. The wicket-taking balls from Bangladesh were on straighter deliveries at a pitch which was offering huge assistance to spinners, making life difficult for India.
But Ashwin and Iyer, India’s last-recognised batting pair, defended solidly, mixed caution with aggression and then brought out a flurry of boundaries at the end to take the visitors’ over the line.

Dhaka, Dec 23 (Ians) Rishabh Pant and Shreyas Iyer slammed counter-attacking fifties to put India in an advantageous position on day two of second Test against Bangladesh at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium, here on Friday.
It was a day where Bangladesh took out India’s top three in the first session and then took out Virat Kohli quickly in the second session to leave them at 94/4. That’s when Pant and Iyer joined forces for an important 159-run stand for the fifth wicket, which made the difference for India in taking a sizable 87-run lead.
Though the duo fell short of their respective centuries, as Pant made 93 off 104 balls and Iyer scored 87 off 105 balls, the efforts from the left-right batting duo on a tough, deteriorating pitch, including making 140 runs in the second session at a run rate of 5.6.
Bangladesh openers Zakir Hasan and Najmul Hossain Shanto did well to negotiate six tricky overs before stumps.

Dhaka, Dec 22 (Ians) Bangladesh batter Mominul Haque broke his run of nine consecutive single-digit scores with a stroke-filled 65 not out. But India continued to strike, taking important scalps as Bangladesh reached 184/5 at tea on day one of the second Test at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium on Thursday.
It was a session in which the batters like Shakib Al Hasan, Mushfiqur Rahim and Litton Das got starts. But neither of them couldn’t last long for a big score, as India made strikes at regular intervals, with Jaydev Unadkat looking impressive in just his second Test with his accuracy and ability to challenge Bangladesh batters with seam and extra bounce.
India had success straightaway after lunch as Shakib looked to clear Umesh Yadav over mid-off, but gave a simple catch to the fielder. They were able to keep Mominul and Rahim quiet though the duo got a boundary each.

Another victory in Dhaka will, apart from securing a Test series sweep in Bangladesh, also help India consolidate their second-place standing in the World Test Championship points table, behind toppers Australia.
Stand-in India captain K.L. Rahul revealed that left-arm pacer Jaydev Unadkat has replaced left-arm wrist-spinner, Kuldeep Yadav, in the playing eleven. “Hard decision on Kuldeep but we know Ashwin and Axar can find spin, and bring Jaydev in to cover all bases. Unfortunate decision for us to leave him (Kuldeep) out but it’s an opportunity for Unadkat.”
The Dhaka Test will be just the second appearance for Unadkat in the longer format for India. His only appearance so far in Tests came almost 12 years ago,...

Dhaka, Dec 21 (Ians) Despite Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan bowling only 12 overs in the first innings and not rolling his arm over in the second innings of the first Test against India due to shoulder and rib injury, bowling coach Allan Donald said the left-arm spin all-rounder will be present to bowl in the second Test at Dhaka.
“Shakib is okay, he will bowl. He was bruised and battered in the one-day game here, but he has gone through that. He is available for selection, and available to bowl,” he said in the pre-match press conference.
Donald added that in place of injured Ebadot Hossain, Taskin Ahmed will be taking his place in the playing eleven. “It will be the same three spinners and welcoming back Taskin. Khaled as well. Sorry to the selectors but I am talking out of the room a little bit. That’s what I can see happening.

For the first time in Oscar history, three Persian-language films are up for the Academy Award for best international feature. Alongside Iran’s official entry, Houman Seyyedi’s darkly comic World War III, Denmark has submitted serial killer drama Holy Spider from Iran-born, Copenhagen-based Ali Abbasi. Britain’s hopes, meanwhile, lie with Winners, a tragicomic tale about (of all things) a missing Oscar statue, from director Hassan Nazer, another Iranian expat, who lives in Scotland.
Taken together, the trio of movies represents the breadth of Iranian cinema, within the country and among the filmmaking diaspora.
Winners is Nazer’s love letter to his country’s filmmakers. Dedicated to Iranian directors Abbas Kiarostami, Asghar Farhadi, Majid Majidi and Jafar Panahi, it is jam-packed with references to and quotes from other Farsi films, among them Panahi’s Taxi and Majidi’s Children of Heaven and...

Anyone whose experience of Iranian cinema is limited to the social realism and lyrical fables of Abbas Kiarostami and Asghar Farhadi might be shocked by Houman Seyyedi’s World War III, Iran’s official entry for this year’s best international feature Oscar. The movie, which premiered in Venice, where it won the prize for best film in the Horizons sidebar, is a mashup of genres: part social drama, part thriller, part absurdist film industry satire. Mohsen Tanabandeh was named best actor in Venice Horizons for his portrayal of Shakib, a man who’s still traumatized by the loss, years ago, of his wife and son in a terrible earthquake, and who finds some pickup work as an extra in a World War II movie. When the film’s star has a heart attack, the director asks Shakib to step in and play Adolf Hitler.

Chattogram, Dec 13 (Ians) Bangladesh head coach Russell Domingo said fast-bowling spearhead Taskin Ahmed will not play the first Test match against India, starting at Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium from Wednesday, as he is still recovering from a back injury.
Taskin had also missed the first two ODIs against India at Dhaka due to the same injury. “We are not going to risk Taskin in the first Test. He has come off a layoff and a few injections. To get him to bowl for a day-and-a-half in these conditions in Chattogram may not be good for him,” he said in the pre-match press conference.
Another injury concern for Bangladesh has been captain Shakib Al Hasan, who had to go to a hospital for a check-up of his ribs. “Look we are still assessing him and we would make a call later this afternoon to make sure he is okay. He is...

Chattogram, Dec 13 (Ians) On the eve of starting their first Test against India at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium, Bangladesh have been given a huge scare over the availability of captain Shakib Al Hasan due to some niggles.
As per a report in The Daily Star, Shakib was taken to a hospital in Chattogram due to some discomfort and stiffness in the ribs and shoulders. “He had some stiffness and he went for a checkup”, a source in the Bangladesh Cricket Board (Bcb) was quoted as saying in the report.
The report further said Shakib later returned to the stadium and was seen chatting with the selectors but did not participate in the practice session immediately. It added that he was expected to come to the pre-match press conference on Tuesday, but he went up for a batting session in the nets instead in what was his first net session before the Test series.

Dhaka, Dec 7 (Ians) Shreyas Iyer, Axar Patel and an injured Rohit Sharma hit valiant half-centuries, but their efforts went in vain as India lost the second Odi to Bangladesh in a thrilling encounter at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium (Sbncs) in here, on Wednesday.
After Mehidy Hasan Miraz turned out to be India’s nemesis for the second time in as many matches by scoring an unbeaten 83-ball century while veteran batter Mahmudullah made a fine 77 to carry Bangladesh to a respectable 271/7 in 50 overs from being 69/6 at one stage, their bowlers were clinical in reducing India to 65/4 in 18.3 overs.
India were in troubled waters, and were steered out of it by 82 from Shreyas and run-a-ball 56 from Axar. Rohit, despite a taping on his injured left thumb which didn’t allow him to open, hit an unbeaten 51 off 28 balls and threatened to take the match away from Bangladesh. But it wasn...

Dhaka, Dec 4 (Ians) When Bangladesh were reduced to 136/9 in the 40th over, from being 128/4 and triggered by senior pros Mahmudullah and Mushfiqur Rahim falling on consecutive deliveries, Bangladesh seemed all but out of the chase as an Indian victory seemed imminent.
But Mehidy Hasan Miraz, along with Mustafizur Rahman, had other ideas. As Rahman defended and hit two fours in his ten not out, Mehidy sliced, scooped, pulled, and punched to be unbeaten on 38, hitting four fours and two sixes to complete a stunning come-from-behind victory for Bangladesh.
As India melted under pressure as drop catches, fielding lapses, overthrows and wayward bowling made appearances in the last six overs, Mehidy and Mustafizur grew in confidence to launch a stunning last-wicket counter-attack to give the hosts a 1-0 lead in the three-match series and be the heroes for Bangladesh.

Dhaka, Dec 4 (Ians) Shakib Al Hasan starred with a sensational fifer while Mehidy Hasan Miraz held his nerve to slam an unbeaten cameo and guide Bangladesh to a famous one-wicket victory over India in a low-scoring thriller of the Odi series opener at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium (Sbncs) in Mirpur on Sunday.
In a match that ebbed and flowed, Bangladesh seemed to be on their way to chasing 187 after Shakib’s 5-36 and Ebadot Hossain’s 4-47 bowled India for a paltry 186 in 41.2 overs. But the Indian bowlers, led by Mohammed Siraj and Washington Sundar, triggered a Bangladesh collapse from 128/4 to 136/9 in a span of 26 balls.
With the hosts looking down and out, the result seemed like a foregone conclusion. But Mehidy, mostly farming the strike, had other ideas — slicing short balls from debutant Kuldeep Sen over the third man for a brace of sixes in the 41st over.

Adelaide, Nov 6 (Ians) After missing out on the semifinal berth at the Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 with just two wins in five super 12 matches, Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan on Sunday said that it was the best possible result for his team with the inclusion of new faces and so many changes in the squad recently.

Adelaide, Nov 6 (Ians) Left-arm pacer Shaheen Shah Afridi’s four-wicket haul helped Pakistan confirm their semifinal spot in the Men’s T20 World Cup with a five-wicket victory over Bangladesh in their final Group 2 match of Super 12s at the Adelaide Oval on Sunday.
The unpredictable nature of the tournament meant that this clash became a virtual knockout game as Netherlands shocked South Africa by 13 runs at the same venue earlier in the day.
With the winner to go into the semifinals, Pakistan made the most of the unexpected lifeline as luck smiled on them to enter the last-four for the second time in as many editions of the tournament.

Adelaide, Nov 2 (Ians) Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan rued a close five-run loss to India in Men’s T20 World Cup Group 2 Super 12 match at the Adelaide Oval, saying that a similar scenario is being replayed all the time of them falling short narrowly against their neighbours.
Bangladesh seemed to be cruising to the target of 185 with Litton Das making a stunning 27-ball 60 as they reached 66 for no loss in first seven overs. But rain interruption changed the equation to 151 in 16 overs.

T20 World Cup: Bangladesh turning around from a time where many close matches were lost, says Shakib
Adelaide, Nov 1 (Ians) Citing the three-run win over Zimbabwe in Men’s T20 World Cup, Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan believes his side is slowly making a turnaround from a time in the past where they lost many close matches.
At a typically pace and bouncy pitch of The Gabba, Brisbane, Bangladesh’s bowling attack, especially their fast bowlers, kept their nerve to click as a unit and defend 150 against Zimbabwe for their second Super 12 victory of the tournament.
“Most T20 matches are decided in the last two overs. It is important to hold on to the nerve. We are turning around from a time when we lost a lot of close matches. We are improving in that regard, by winning a couple of close games.”
“I am definitely satisfied (with our performance). We are playing well except the game against South Africa. It can happen in T20s. We...
