The funeral of Queen Elizabeth II on Monday, Sep. 19, is shaping up to be a global spectacle. World leaders, including President Biden, will be in attendance, and the world’s media will be there, too.
The queen’s funeral will be the first time such an event has been broadcast on television. In 1952, when Queen Elizabeth ascended to the throne, the funeral procession of King George VI was televised in the U.K., but the funeral itself remained private. Not so this time.
While the BBC will be the official broadcaster of the proceedings, every U.S. TV news organization will be in attendance, flying in many of their top anchors and blowing up their typical programming lineups to carry it live.
Here’s what’s planned from the U.S. TV news networks.

After months of delays, the “Friends” reunion special could be shifting out of second gear.
According to Matthew Perry, one of the original show’s stars, the special is now scheduled to start shooting in March. The news comes after the special was delayed multiple times due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic and its impact on physical production.
It was originally supposed to film back in March of this year with a live audience, however, those plans were scrapped when the pandemic shut down almost every production across the country. WarnerMedia Entertainment and Direct-to-Consumer chairman Bob Greenblatt then said in May that the company was hopeful the special would shoot by the end of the summer. But once again those fingers had to be un-crossed.
An individual with knowledge of the special’s production plans stressed that no precise dates have been determined for shooting, but that early 2021 is indeed the target time frame.

Those still waiting on the much-talked about “Friends” reunion got a little taste on Sunday night during the 2020 Emmys as Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox and Lisa Kudrow got together for a virtual appearance during the awards show.
“We’ve been roommates since 1994,” Aniston said after Cox dropped in to surprise host Jimmy Kimmel and audiences watching at home.
Back in April, HBO Max was forced to delay a scheduled “Friends” reunion special due to the ongoing novel coronavirus pandemic. The series, which ended in 2004, was HBO Max’s most-watched show when it launched, and the special was expected to help further propel the launch of the streaming service, which launched in May.
Jason Bateman, who was featured in an opening monologue bit for the awards show, also joined Aniston, Cox and Kudrow for the mini reunion. None of the guys from the show dropped in for the reunion.

Taping of the untitled unscripted Friends reunion special for HBO Max has been further delayed by the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
Originally slated to film right after all production was shut down in mid-March because of the outbreak, it was pushed to May so the special could still be ready for HBO Max’s May 27 launch. With the country in the grips of the pandemic, the taping was postponed again and could not make HBO Max’s debut.
I hear the most recent date was Aug. 17, and there had been initial optimism that production could be pulled off until Covid cases started spiking again, prolonging the ongoing Hollywood shutdown related to the pandemic. I hear that plan was recently called off, and there is no new target date as the situation remains fluid.

Ted Koppel hasn’t anchored ABC’s “Nightline” since 2005. Yet he’s had a new influence on the late-night news program since last week.
“Nightline” has, at least for now, returned to the format that brought it critical renown and TV fame. Since last Monday, the show has spent its regular late-night half hour delving into the world’s coronavirus crisis. And, starting tomorrow night, it will for a time return to its original perch, airing right after late local news, just like Koppel did. Repeats of late-night mainstay “Jimmy Kimmel Live” will start after midnight.
“We are just leaning more heavily into our roots,” says Byron Pitts, who co-anchors the program with Juju Chang.
On one recent night’s broadcast, ABC News foreign correspondent James Longman offered viewers a you-are-there look at his efforts to get out of Italy before the country was locked down, then checked himself in to an Airbnb to recover.

Fans are finally getting that long-awaited “Friends” reunion — in the form of a special that brings the cast back together to talk about the popular NBC sitcom.
Series stars Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry and David Schwimmer will return to the comedy’s original soundstage, Stage 24, on the Warner Bros. Studio lot in Burbank. The unscripted cast reunion special, along with all 236 episodes, will be available to subscribers at the launch of HBO Max in May.
“Guess you could call this the one where they all got back together — we are reuniting with David, Jennifer, Courteney, Matt, Lisa, and Matthew for an HBO Max special that will be programmed alongside the entire ‘Friends’ library,” Kevin Reilly, chief content officer, HBO Max and president, TBS, TNT and truTV, said. “I became aware of ‘Friends’ when it was in the very early stages of development and then...

It’s happening: The “Friends” cast is reuniting for an exclusive untitled unscripted special on HBO Max.
Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry and David Schwimmer will return to the original “Friends” soundstage, Stage 24, on the Warner Bros. Studio lot in Burbank to celebrate the long-running series, which ended its run in 2004.
Sources close to the situation tell Variety the six stars will receive at least $2.5 million apiece for participating in the special.
The reunion has been hotly anticipated, with speculation about the HBO Max special swirling since last fall, just months after the WarnerMedia-created Svod platform nabbed the streaming rights to the show from Netflix in a deal with Warner Bros. Television. All 10 seasons of the comedy left Netflix at the end of 2019, meaning that “Friends” has thus far not been available to stream in the U.S. this calendar year — at least, not...

It’s official. Months after the 25th anniversary of the launch of Friends, the cast will be reuniting exclusively for an untitled unscripted special for HBO Max. It will be directed by Ben Winston and produced by Fulwell 73 (The Late Late Show with James Corden) and Warner Bros. Unscripted & Alternative Television.
Series stars Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry, and David Schwimmer will return to the iconic comedy’s original soundstage, Stage 24, on the Warner Bros. Studio lot in Burbank to film the reunion special. The sextet also will serve as executive producers alongside Friends creators Kevin Bright, Marta Kauffman and David Crane.
The special, along with all 236 episodes of the Emmy-winning 1994-2004 NBC series, will be available to subscribers at the launch of HBO Max in May.
As Deadline reported earlier this month, following tough negotiations, the Friends cast reached an agreement in principle with series’ producer Warner Bros.
