The 2023 Canadian film Beau is Afraid, directed and written by Ari Aster and starring Joaquin Phoenix, is a trip to an incomprehensible nightmare that you won’t be able to escape.
Ari Aster has done it before with “Hereditary” and “Midsommar,” and now he has created another film that can only be made by him. This is a journey into madness from the very beginning, and it’s a film that you’ll either love or hate.
Beau is Afraid (2023)
Joaquin Phoenix, one of those actors who loves to carry the weight of the film and whose abilities allow him to do so, stars in “Beau is Afraid. While we eagerly await “Joker 2” and its highly anticipated co-star (none other than Lady Gaga), Phoenix offers another one of those performances that only he could do justice to. Ari Aster is an excellent director, and with Phoenix’s signature already on the dotted line,...

Beau Is Afraid is the third film from writer-director Ari Aster, following his devastating one-two punch of Hereditary and Midsommar. As such, it’s certain to confound expectations, a surreal odyssey that comes across more like a Charlie Kaufman movie rather than a straight-up horror, though it’s frequently unsettling and has some truly unforgettable moments.
Joaquin Phoenix plays Beau Wassermann, an anxiety-ridden paranoiac who lives in an urban hellscape, where all manner of atrocities unfold on his doorstep at any given moment. Beau may be afraid, but actor Armen Nahapetian is more concerned that you think he is a work of artificial intelligence. The Beau Is Afraid co-star, who plays the teenage version of Joaquin Phoenix’s character, recently updated his Instagram profile bio to read, “I’m not AI”…which most actors generally don’t have to explain.
Yet, Armen Nahapetian has been the subject of just that, facing accusations that he’s actually a digitally created entity and not flesh, bones and DNA, telling Variety that the Instagram update is “half joking, but half being serious…I thought people would eventually realize that, you know, I’m a real boy.” But this hasn’t been the case even after stepping out for the premiere of Beau Is Afraid, as he has continued to face skepticism. “I went to the movie theater a few weeks ago, and one of the employees...

Armen Nahapetian wants the world to know: “I’m not AI.” The 16-year-old actor is gaining notice, but not only for playing a teenage version of Joaquin Phoenix’s titular worrywart in Ari Aster’s epic dark comedy “Beau Is Afraid.” He added the disclaimer to his Instagram bio because people keep thinking he’s not a real person, but instead a digitally de-aged Phoenix.
“I went to the movie theater a few weeks ago, and one of the employees was pointing at the poster saying, ‘Oh, my God, you’re real!’” Nahapetian recalls, speaking with Variety.
The main poster art features four versions of Beau, all posing in shimmering gray satin pajamas. There’s a Phoenix wearing a farmer’s hat, a Phoenix sporting male pattern baldness, a Phoenix buried under wrinkles — and a smooth-faced Nahapetian. The theater employee’s confusion may seem absurd, but the reasoning makes sense:...

The thesis for Ari Aster's tragicomic nightmare "Beau Is Afraid" is stated pretty plainly up front. Beau (Joaquin Phoenix) visits his therapist (Stephen McKinley Henderson) to talk about his anxieties, particularly how they stem from his mother. The unnamed therapist asks point blank: "Do you ever wish she was dead?" Beau shifts uncomfortably. He is prescribed a mysterious medicine and sent on his way. On the way back to his apartment, the audience sees the hell that Beau lives in. There are dead bodies in the street that no one has bothered to move in weeks. There are violent fights and fatal stabbings in broad daylight. Beau has to run through the chaos at top speed to avoid being apprehended by a black-eyed tattoo punk who clearly wants to do him harm. Once safely locked inside his vandalized, decrepit building, Beau can finally rest inside his squalid hole of misery.

Joaquin Phoenix as Beau in Beau Is Afraid. Courtesy of A24.
Beau Is Afraid – and confused and feeling guilty and often fleeing in panic, as he is caught in a world of bizarre events, in director/writer Ari Aster’s nightmarish fever dream of a movie, Beau Is Afraid. And mostly, Beau has mommy issues. This unsettling horror mind-trip, with a touch of darkest humor and surrealist fantasy, has the prefect star, that master of madness, Joaquin Phoenix, who plays an anxious, nervous man who might be prone to hallucinations who sets out to do a seemingly simple thing: visit his mother.
Craziness is afoot and there is plenty for Beau to be afraid of in Ari Aster’s Beau Is Afraid. The weird, imaginative and sometimes darkly humorous Beau Is Afraid is a squirm-inducing experience from a director who is scary good at creating unsettling movies, whose previous films...

Ari Aster has quickly become a favorite of mine. The filmmaker has crafted three excellent and terribly fascinating features Hereditary, Midsommar, and Beau is Afraid. His latest is a strange and beautiful concoction of mommy issues gone wrong. It’s a delicious black comedy, it’s a little horrific, and it’s weird Af. Yes, weird is a great description – seriously, check out Chris Bumbray’s own take Here. And, of course, Joker Oscar winner Joaquin Phoenix is utterly stellar here. This incredible cast includes the great Patti LuPone, Zoe-Lister Jones, Armen Nahapetian, and more. It’s very likely you’ve never watched a flick quite like this.
I recently had a terrific conversation with a few of the cast members behind this strange tale. Amy Ryan and Nathan Lane, who are both terrific here, add a wonderful element to the storyline they inhabit. The two opened up about working with Mr.

“This is my nightmare.”
That’s how filmmaker Ari Aster kicked off his interview with The Hollywood Reporter on Monday night while standing on the red carpet ahead of the L.A. premiere of his latest film, Beau Is Afraid. It was in reference to the obligation of doing press, something he clearly does not enjoy. Same goes for his star, Joaquin Phoenix, who turned up to the DGA Theatre to pose for photos and make a brief appearance on stage with the rest of the cast as Aster introduced the A24 epic.
“I still can’t quite believe I was given the resources and the freedom to make this in the way that we did,” Aster said during those remarks in front of a capacity crowd that included Pedro Pascal; Jenna Ortega; Jesse Williams; Everything Everywhere All at Once’s Daniel Kwan, Daniel Schienert, Jonathan Wang and Harry Shum Jr....

Playing Beau Wassermann, the character who gives Ari Aster’s third feature its name, Joaquin Phoenix goes balls to the wall in a performance of astonishing intensity that holds nothing back. Beau lives next door to a peep show emporium called Ejectus Erectus, and at one point is informed by a medic that his abnormally distended testicles are cause for concern, which is just one of many indications that this guy badly needs to — how to put it delicately? — oh heck, shoot a load.
Three hours that definitely put the odd in odyssey, Beau Is Afraid could be said to suffer from the same bloat, wandering through bizarre detours of varying effectiveness before arriving at a wonderfully overripe operatic climax elevated by Patti LuPone as the Lydia Tár of single mothers. But even if its pacing is uneven, this is a movie of undeniably impressive big swings.

The new trailer for Beau is Afraid is pretty much everything you’d expect from an Ari Aster and A24 (Everything Everywhere All at Once) film. The trailer does a terrific job of teasing what’s in store without actually giving away any of the plot.
Oscar winner Joaquin Phoenix (Joker) leads the cast as the titular character. Emmy Award winner Nathan Lane (Only Murders in the Building), Oscar nominee Amy Ryan (Gone Baby Gone), Parker Posey (Lost in Space), and three-time Tony Award winner Patti LuPone also star along with Stephen McKinley Henderson (Causeway), Hayley Squires (Great Expectations), Denis Ménochet (The Mauritanian), Kylie Rogers (Home Before Dark), Armen Nahapetian (Here and Now), and Zoe Lister-Jones (Life in Pieces).
A24 released this extremely basic synopsis: “A paranoid man goes on an epic odyssey in order to get back home in this bold and ingeniously depraved new film from writer/director Ari Aster.

We’re just under a month out from Beau Is Afraid, a nightmare comedy from A24 and director Ari Aster (Hereditary, Midsommar) that will release in theaters on April 21, 2023.
While the marketing campaign seems quiet so close to release, clues scattered across the web suggest a Beau is Afraid Arg (Augmented Reality Game) is well underway in promotion of Aster’s latest…
Earlier this year, an official movie TikTok account posted now-deleted videos directing viewers to the Mw Industries® Instagram, followed by a website to sign up to become Mw Ambassadors. Subscribers get periodic updates, including secret links to A24’s shop for Mw Industries® merch and notifications for a newly created LinkedIn page for the fictional company. The trailer for A24 and director Ari Aster‘s new movie Beau Is Afraid debuted earlier this week, and today the film’s official MPA rating has been revealed.
Much like Aster’s two previous movies, Beau Is Afraid is rated “R” for…
“Strong violent content, sexual content, graphic nudity, drug use, and language.”
This one doesn’t appear to be a horror movie of any kind, mind you, but rather a “nightmare comedy” of sorts. A24 will be releasing Aster’s latest film in theaters on April 21, 2023.
Here’s the brand new plot synopsis…
“A paranoid man embarks on an epic odyssey to get home to his mother in this bold and ingeniously depraved new film from writer/director Ari Aster.”
Joaquin Phoenix, Nathan Lane, Amy Ryan, Stephen Mckinley Henderson, Hayley Squires, Denis Ménochet, Kylie Rogers, Armen Nahapetian, Parker Posey, and Patti LuPone star.

Tease yet give nothing away…that’s what A24 accomplishes with the first trailer for writer/director Ari Aster’s Beau is Afraid. What little can be gleaned from the trailer indicates that Aster’s third outing at the helm of a feature film might even surpass what he achieved with his first two movies, Midsommar and Hereditary.
The trailer also makes us want to crawl inside Ari Aster’s mind for 10 minutes; any longer might be hazardous to one’s health.
Oscar winner Joaquin Phoenix (Joker) leads a cast that includes Emmy Award winner Nathan Lane (Only Murders in the Building), Oscar nominee Amy Ryan (Gone Baby Gone), Screen Actors Guild Awards nominee Stephen McKinley Henderson (Lady Bird), and BAFTA Awards nominee Hayley Squires (Adult Material). Denis Ménochet (Inglourious Basterds), Kylie Rogers (Yellowstone), Armen Nahapetian (Here and Now), Zoe Lister-Jones (Life in Pieces), Parker Posey (The Staircase), and Patti LuPone...

All eyes have been fixed on what horror filmmaker Ari Aster might have up his sleeve with "Beau is Afraid," the director's highly anticipated third film that was previously known under the title of "Disappointment Blvd." Even if Aster hadn't set the bar astronomically high with his first two directorial efforts, "Hereditary" and "Midsommar," going so far as to describe the upcoming project as a four-hour long "nightmare comedy" certainly will do the trick. Adding an actor of Joaquin Phoenix's caliber into the mix will always draw attention, for sure, but so too does the added wrinkle of having him portray the eponymous Beau at various different stages of his life. If you're sensing a trend here, it's the idea that there is simply no such thing as "too far" when it comes to an Ari Aster film.

Getting home proves an especially bizarre and danger-filled journey for a paranoid man with mommy issues, played by Joaquin Phoenix, in the first trailer for Beau is Afraid, which dropped on Tuesday.
The teaser for writer-director Ari Aster’s A24 film opens on Beau, played by Phoenix, having a frightening flashback to a family cruise vacation during his childhood. “I’m so sorry for what your dad passed down to you, but I wanted a child. … The greatest gift of my life,” Beau’s mother tells his younger self.
Then, Beau, suddenly fast-forwarded to the present, tells his therapist: “I’m visiting my mother tomorrow.” That unleashes a bizarre and, at times trippy, journey where Beau, at one point escaping the clutches of his doctor, played by Nathan Lane, darts around and over people while madly running in the street, gets hit by a car and even walks through a...

It’s official: Empire is afraid. Because when a new Ari Aster’s central Beau. Watch the off-the-wall trailer here:
If you crossed Aster’s previous work with the reality-warping existentialism of Charlie Kaufman, or the hand-crafted maximalism of Daniels, it seems like you’d get something close to Beau Is Afraid – and yet, in true A24 style, we still don’t know really what this one is about, on a pure-plot level. What we do know is that we’ll see Phoenix in various stages of aged-up make-up, joined on screen by the likes of Amy Ryan, Nathan Lane, Zoe Lister-Jones and Armen Nahapetian – with the cast list also set to include Parker Posey and Patti LuPone.
The biggest question? When will we see it? American audiences will get their chance to bask in the unease of Aster’s latest vision when Beau Is Afraid hits cinemas in April...

"Feeling sad about going home, Beau? Must feel totally unreal." A24 has revealed the first official trailer for a film titled Beau is Afraid, the latest feature made by acclaimed genre filmmaker Ari Aster - known for the hits Hereditary and Midsommar previously. This time he's telling a different story, not really horror but still unsettling. The film is a decades-spanning portrait of one of the "most successful entrepreneurs of all time", named Beau, as played by Joaquin Phoenix at various ages throughout his life. There's so many strange, fantastical shots in this - there's much more going on than meets the eye. No surprise with a film from Ari Aster. The film's cast also includes Nathan Lane, Amy Ryan, Patti LuPone, Kylie Rogers, Parker Posey, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Hayley Squires, and Denis Ménochet; with Armen Nahapetian as a young Beau. I'm still not entirely sure what this is really about,...

When it was teased that Ari Aster's highly anticipated third feature was going to be a "nightmare comedy," a ton of questions obviously surfaced. Will this new film mark a shift away from the eerie horror of "Hereditary" and "Midsommar?" Will the movie actually be four hours long as he claimed? What even is a nightmare comedy? Well, it looks like those questions will be answered soon, although several more will likely be asked in the process. That's because A24 has officially unveiled the first look of Aster's third film, "Beau is Afraid" (previously "Disappointment Blvd.").
Obviously, not a ton of footage was shown, but we do know that Joaquin Phoenix is playing a world-renowned entrepreneur plagued by mysterious and tormenting forces. There has been a lot of unintentional comedy scattered throughout his previous two films, but it'll be interesting to see how it plays out in this supposed nightmare comedy.

While on the surface they perhaps don’t seem like summer blockbusters, Ari Aster’s debut Hereditary and follow-up Midsommar enjoyed wide releases during the heated seasons and found quite substantial audiences. With his third feature, A24 clearly has something more peculiar on its hands. Beau Is Afraid, starring Joaquin Phoenix, will be released in the more adventurous spring frame––specifically April 21––and the first trailer has now arrived.
Though originally announced as Disappointment Blvd., this new title actually harkens back to the project’s origins. In 2011, Aster directed a short film, Beau, which would be the basis for a sequence in the feature, and an early draft of a 2014 script had circulated online. The official logline is brief (“a paranoid man embarks on an epic odyssey to get home to his mother in this bold and ingeniously depraved new film from writer/director Ari Aster”) and the first trailer doesn’t reveal much more,...
