What’s Good: Not trying too hard to release this in theatres and giving us the option to skip it midway…
What’s Bad: …though I couldn’t skip the film midway because of the review, but you can
Loo Break: You don’t even have to pause the film; in fact, watch it for ten minutes and go on a break for 1 hour 30 minutes, and by the time you are back, this will be over
Watch or Not?: Lol! Would you still ask from whatever you’ve read till now?

Plot: A band of expert criminals led by Cyrus Whitaker is recruited to do what they do best — lift $500 million in gold from a passenger plane— but they must do it mid-flight at 40,000 feet!
Review: The entire plot of the Quibi/Roku series Die Hart hinges on Kevin Hart wanting to break out of comedy roles so he can be taken seriously as an action hero. While that plot was played for laughs, it was not the first time Hart tried something different. Both his films The Upside and Fatherhood, as well as the Netflix limited series True Story gave Hart more opportunities to channel his dramatic talents, but Lift is the comedian’s first project that is straight action without the reliance on his being the butt of the joke. Cast in a role commonly saved for Hart’s friends Dwayne Johnson and Mark Wahlberg, Lift is a big-budget...

"Three... two... one... lift!" Netflix has unveiled the final "New Year's Day" trailer for the heist action comedy Lift, coming to Netflix to watch streaming in just a few weeks. This action thriller comedy is one of the first big releases on Netflix in 2024 (along with Society of the Snow). An international heist crew, led by Cyrus Whitaker, race to lift $500 million in gold from a passenger plane while flying at 40,000 feet. It's from the same director as The Italian Job remake and Law Abiding Citizen, so it might actually be entertaining to watch. With Kevin Hart Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Vincent D'Onofrio, Úrsula Corberó, Jacob Batalon, Billy Magnussen, Viveik Kalra, Yun Jee Kim, Burn Gorman, Paul Anderson, plus Jean Reno and Sam Worthington. This doesn't look that bad, but it also but doesn't look that good either, like most of the expensive Netflix movies recently. Worth a watch? Hard to tell from just the trailers.

"It's impossible." "It just hasn't been done before." Can they pull it off? Netflix has revealed the first trailer for a new heist action comedy called Lift, coming to Netflix to watch in January 2024 early next year. This trailer just debuted during a big NFL game, which means Netflix is trying to make this one of their next big hits. Does it really have that potential? An international heist crew, led by Cyrus Whitaker, race to lift $500 million in gold from a passenger plane while flying at 40,000 feet. It's from the same director as The Italian Job remake and Law Abiding Citizen, F. Gary Gray, so it might actually be pretty cool to see them pull this off. Gurinder Chadha's coming-of-age comedy hits all the right notes - and not just in terms of its Bruce Springsteen soundtrack. It's 1987 and Javed has high hopes of being a writer. When a friend (Aaron Phagura) turns him on to The Boss, Javed becomes his No.1 fan and.uses the music for inspiration. Underpinned by the engaging memoir by Sarfraz Manzoor, from which it is adapted, this is a pacy consideration of teenage life of the period that tackles more serious considerations of the racism and prejudice of the period lightly but effectively.
The Son, Amazon Prime
Anne-Katrin Titze writes: The center of Florian Zeller’s intergenerational drama, The Son, adapted from his play Le Fils by Christopher Hampton, is occupied by a cypher. Nicholas (Zen McGrath) is 17 and lives with his mother Kate in Brooklyn.

“Lift” also falls under Hart and his HartBeat Productions’ creative partnership with Netflix. He’ll produce for HartBeat along with Bryan Smiley. Simon Kinberg and Audrey Chon for Genre Pictures and Matt Reeves and Adam Kassan for 6th & Idaho are also producing.

Fittingly enough, “Three Months” is a movie about waiting, and while 12 weeks may seem like an eternity to its openly gay lead character, Caleb (Australian pop star Troye Sivan), it’s nothing compared with the decades others have spent waiting for a project like this to come along. Here, readily available to anyone with a Paramount Plus subscription, is a frank, affirmational portrait of a contemporary queer teenager. Writer-director Jared Frieder’s feature debut feels like the LGBT equivalent of “Juno”: snappy and refreshingly nonjudgmental in dealing with the consequences of a risky one-night stand.
In 2011, when the movie is set, it takes three months for an antibody test to conclusively determine whether someone who might have been exposed to HIV was in fact infected. That’s a simple rule of the road for sexually active gay men, but one rarely discussed in popular culture. It can hardly be...

Caleb is looking for answers. That isn’t surprising; after all, he’s a just-graduated queer teen desperate to get out of South Florida, an endless summer of nothing stretching before him, simply itching for his “real life” to start. But Caleb, already understandably restless and out of place, really has one big, major answer he needs: whether or not he has HIV. And while this might not sound like the stuff of coming-of-age comedy, first-time filmmaker
Frieder, who previously served as a staff writer on the cut-way-too-short series “Sweet/Vicious,” knows a thing or two about the dramatic plot he’s crafted: He lived his own version of it more than a decade ago. Over time, Frieder’s story has seemingly settled into the neat beats of the indie coming-of-age tale, complete with “wacky mode of transportation,” “unsettling subplot involving a Bff that’s treated way too tamely,” and even “Ellen Burstyn is the grandmother!

"I'm not really sure how I'm feeling. And I think that's okay." Paramount has unveiled an official trailer for Three Months, a coming-of-age indie dramedy marking the feature directorial debut of filmmaker Jared Frieder. This hasn't played at any festivals as far as we know, but MTV is standing behind it and releasing the film streaming on Paramount+ later this month. Troye Sivan stars as Caleb, a South Florida teen. On the eve of his high school graduation, everything changes when he's exposed to HIV. While he waits three months for his results, he finds love in the most unlikely of places. Aw this looks really lovely! Better than expected. It also stars Viveik Kalra, Brianne Tju, Ellen Burstyn, Judy Greer, Javier Munoz, Louis Gossett, Jr., and Amy Landecker. I am not sure where this came from but it might be something special. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Jared Frieder's Three Months,...

Lionsgate’s Voyagers isn’t your ordinary “the human race is in danger” sci fi romp.
Written and directed by Neil Burger Voyagers follows a group of young men and women bred specifically to have a great level of intelligence and obedience as they embark on an expedition to colonize a distant planet.
Sounds like good, safe fun, right? Well, if it was it wouldn’t be a movie worth watching.
It doesn’t take long for the young group of what could be manufactured automatons to start to uncover disturbing secrets about the mission. As things begin to unravel, they defy their training and begin to explore their most primitive natures. As a result, the entire ship becomes chaos in space as they’re consumed by fear, lust, and the insatiable hunger for power.

Neil Burger only directed the first installment of the ill-fated “Divergent” series before moving on to more lucrative problems, but his latest film — a self-generated story that re-stages “Lord of the Flies” on a cramped spaceship full of horny teens — suggests an enduring fascination with the same kind of YA futurism that was all the rage back when Lionsgate was hoping to make Beatrice Prior into the next Katniss Everdeen. Between its dystopian overtures, antiseptic white sets, and diverse-ish cast of talented young actors forced to subsume their colorful screen personas into embryonic characters whose dialogue is limited to lines like “what does it feel like to feel something?,”
For better or worse, Burger knows it doesn’t have to. The middling but enjoyable “Voyagers” is meant to be a timeless parable about the primitive essence of human nature; if its space-age shenanigans are broadly identical to the beats of...

"You're not feeling what I'm feeling." Lionsgate has debuted a full-length official trailer for Voyagers, the latest from director Neil Burger. This is such a kinky and wild premise - a bunch of perfect teens born on a spaceship go crazy with sensation once they realize they're being drugged to not have any feelings. The cast features Tye Sheridan, Lily-Rose Depp, Fionn Whitehead, Chanté Adams, Isaac Hempstead Wright, Viveik Kalra, Archie Madekwe, Quintessa Swindell, Madison Hu, and Colin Farrell. High School romance movies are not about high school romances. You may think you know the beats, the form and the codes, but as Words On The Bathroom Wall, which is available to Rent on Digital from today, proves, the genre isn’t really a genre at all. Teenagers at school fall in love in coming of age romances, of course, but they also crop up in horror films, in science fiction, in thrillers, in musicals, in mysteries. The stories can be harrowing and happy, terrifying or tender.
What connects them isn’t the prom scene, the bit in the showers or the quirky teacher, they’re not even, really, films about love, or sex, or the lack there-of. The best High School love stories are about discovering who you are. Words is a sweet and self-aware school movie, sure, and its central romance to an extent runs along those familiar grooves,...

"What does it feel like to feel something?" Lionsgate has finally revealed the first teaser trailer for a new sci-fi space adventure movie called Voyagers, the latest from director Neil Burger. This was originally set for last year, but has been delayed and is now set to open in April this spring. The ensemble features Tye Sheridan, Lily-Rose Depp, Fionn Whitehead, Chanté Adams, Isaac Hempstead Wright, Viveik Kalra, Archie Madekwe, Quintessa Swindell, Madison Hu, and Colin Farrell. At first glance, this looks like the Hollywood remake of Claire Denis' High Life, addressing issues of desire and pleasure and destruction while traveling on long space voyages. In the first teaser for “Voyagers,” Tye Sheridan discovers that experimenting with sex, drugs, club bangers and man’s most primitive urges is even more exciting than exploring the reaches of outer space.
“Voyagers” is the next film from “Limitless” director Neil Burger. It’s a sci-fi in setting, but it’s actually about how a bunch of hot young people who are discovering human pleasures for the first time let fear, lust and the insatiable hunger for power all go to their heads.
“What does it feel like to feel something,” Sheridan says in the trailer. “Maybe this is our true nature.”
“Voyagers” stars Sheridan, Lily-Rose Depp and Fionn Whitehead with Colin Farrell in a supporting role. And the main cast all plays a group of young men and women who have been bred for intelligence and obedience, all of whom are kept in line by drinking a substance they call “Blue.

International drama series follows a guru in rural India who builds an international empire.
India’s Applause Entertainment is making its first step into international drama series in partnership with Gurinder Chadha’s UK-based Bend It Films & TV and Sunder Aaron’s Us-based Locomotive Global Inc.
The three companies are collaborating on a project entitled Seeker, which traces the rise of a small village guru who becomes a “steely, enigmatic mystic” with a “vast and byzantine empire” that has influence worldwide.
Described as a multi-season drama series, the project is currently being scripted by a writers’ room of international talent.

Even with stiff competition from Disney — a studio that ruled multiplexes in 2019 with “Avengers: Endgame,” “The Lion King,” “Toy Story 4,” “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” and more — a healthy number of small and medium-budgeted movies released this year still managed to find the audiences they were supposed to.
“Hustlers” and “Knives Out” both grossed more than $100 million at the domestic box office, a rare occurrence for movies not based on existing IP. “Parasite,” a parable about wealth among two South Korean families from director Bong Joon Ho, earned more than $20 million as the highest-performing foreign-language film of the year. “Harriet,” the biopic about the conductor of the Underground Railroad, made $43 million. “Queen & Slim,” about a black couple’s fatal encounter with a racist cop, was another winner, with more than $40 million in ticket sales. And after sold-out showings last week, “Little Women” and “Uncut Gems” are off to a strong start.

For our most comprehensive year-end feature, we’re providing a cumulative look at The Film Stage’s favorite films of 2019. We’ve asked our contributors to compile ten-best lists with five honorable mentions–a selection of those personal lists will be shared in the coming days–and, after tallying the votes, a top 50 has been assembled.
It should be noted that, unlike our other year-end features, we placed no requirement on a selection being a U.S theatrical release, so you may see some repeats from last year and a few we’ll certainly discuss more over the next twelve months. So, without further ado, check out our rundown of 2019 below, our ongoing year-end coverage here (including where to stream many of the below picks), and return in the coming weeks as we look towards 2020.

Blinded by the Light is directed by famed Indian/British director Gurinder Chadha – a sizeable and much-needed voice in British Cinema who has been a devotee of crafting and spreading stories of minorities since the early days of her work with the BFI in the 1990s. Bend It like Beckham brought her worldwide attention and critical acclaim; however, Chadha has been on the quiet end of her cinematic entities ever since. Crafting more Indian led stories to great success. She dived back into coming of age circuit with the cult hit Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging, her first and only predominately white cast, but it would take another decade until Viceroys House...

To mark the release of Blinded by the Light on 9th December, we’ve been given 2 copies to give away on Blu-ray.
Based on Manzoor’s memoir ‘Greetings from Bury Park: Race, Religion and Rock N’ Roll,’ Blinded by the Light follows the inspirational story of 16-year-old British Pakistani boy, Javed (Viveik Kalra) growing up in the boring, industrial city of Luton in 1987. Javed wants what all teenagers want: a girlfriend, the freedom to go to parties, but most of all, he wants to be a writer. Unfortunately, his family has other ideas of how Pakistani boys should behave. A chance run-in with a boy at his new school leaves Javed with a Bruce Springsteen cassette tape. When he first hears Springsteen’s music, everything in his life changes. The lyrics encourage him to find his own writing voice, talk to the girl he’s always fancied and challenge his...

For awards season pundits, the Golden Globes offer double the prognostications, and double the fun.
Films and actors can compete in drama or musical/comedy categories, so a drama with some humor, such as “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” will most likely find an easy path to a kudo, rather than competing in the much more crowded drama feature race.
That said, the musical/comedy race has produced such Oscar-winning best pictures as 2019’s “Green Book,” 2017’s “La La Land” and 2012”s “The Artist,” plus several nominees that made the ballot but didn’t take the big prize.
Music or Comedy
This year, the adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s legit veteran “Cats” is the only traditional musical competing in the category. The trailer elicited mixed response but generated a lot of talk.
“Rocketman’s” fantasy-driven, flashy singing and dancing numbers are far from helmer Dexter Fletcher’s more...

ITV will not be commissioning a second series of Bend It Like Beckham filmmaker Gurinder Chadha’s lavish period drama Beecham House.
The six-part series, produced by Chadha’s Bend It TV, only managed to pull in an audience of 3.3M in a prestige Sunday night slot. It could not compete with other dramas in the same ITV slot, such as Victoria.
Beecham House will air on PBS in March next year. ITV said Chadha is still hoping to keep the drama going beyond series one through a deal with another international broadcaster.
The drama takes place on the cusp of 19th century in Delhi, following the fortunes of the residents of the titular mansion. It was written by Chadha, Paul Mayeda Berges, Shahrukh Husain and Victor Levin (Mad Men).
The ensemble cast includes Lesley Nicol (Downton Abbey), Gregory Fitoussi, Adil Ray (Citizen Khan), Pallavi Sharda (Lion...
