The story focuses on Julio Lopez (Estrada), a thirty-year-old man living with his mother and grandmother in his childhood bedroom. He has been dating his girlfriend since high school and finds any excuse to avoid focusing on his problems. This Fool’s days at Hulu have come to an end.
The Disney-owned streamer has opted to cancel This Fool after a two-season run, The Hollywood Reporter has learned. Chris Estrada created the series and starred as Julio Lopez, a 30-year-old who lives with his family and works at a gang rehab center.
Sources say This Fool will remain on Hulu’s platform after the streamer put a big marketing push behind both seasons of the series, which despite strong reviews, failed to find an audience large enough to justify a third season. Season two last aired in July 2023.
This Fool was produced in-house by Disney’s ABC Signature and was exec produced by Estrada, showrunner Jonathan Groff (Black-ish), Fred Armisen, Pat Bishop, Matt Ingebretson and Jake Weisman.
In an interview with TV’s Top 5, Estrada spoke of reuniting with the creators of Comedy Central’s Corporate for This Fool,...

The late Norman Lear’s life and legacy took center stage tonight at the 2023 Sentinel Awards at the Writers Guild Theater in Beverly Hills.
The awards, which celebrate the storytellers behind some of the year’s most impactful stories, heard a statement from Lyn Lear read at the start of the show by Marty Kaplan, founding director of the Norman Lear Center.
“I would have been there tonight if not for the passing of our beloved Norman. He was so proud of the work of The Lear Center and Hollywood Health and Society. And he would not have wanted all of us to mourn. He would want us to celebrate the important shows you are honoring tonight, and most of all… he would want us to laugh.”
The night celebrated Lear’s lasting impact on television and the world, underlining his strong advocacy that television and storytelling makes a difference.

In a sad bit of coincidence, the Hollywood, Health & Society at the USC Annenberg Norman Lear Center honored its 2023 Sentinel Awards winners on Wednesday night, just hours after the passing of its namesake and inspiration, the legendary Norman Lear.
Emmy-winning comedian and writer Larry Wilmore hosted the event and introduced this year’s 11 winners, including writers behind the series “Mrs. Davis,” “Fleishman is in Trouble” and “Tiny Beautiful Things.” But before the awards were handed out, Wilmore took a moment to pay tribute to Lear. And remarks from Lear’s wife, Lyn, were shared with the audience.
“Well you got to say this about Norman – the man knew how to make an exit,” Wilmore joked. “He knew his audience. And wanted us to make sure we were all listening.
“A giant has left us and we’re going to do him proud,” he added. “This evening meant a lot...

In Freeform’s adult animated comedy Praise Petey, New York “It” girl Petey St. Barts (Annie Murphy) becomes a southern cult leader after a father she never knew dies and leaves her his rather complicated legacy.
That includes an entire working town, a throng of comet-obsessed cult members and one hot (and morally superior) redneck named Bandit (John Cho). In desperate need of food and direction until an alien race comes to collect them, Petey’s prophesized arrival seemingly guarantees for the citizens of New Utopia that they will once again have a sense of purpose.
But the former New Yorker with mommy issues and (failed) magazine dreams understandably finds all the human sacrifice and human Shih Tzus (Alfred Molina) a little too much. So instead of merely taking the reins from her father, Petey — alongside Bandit, best friend Eliza (Kiersey Clemons), right-hand Mae Mae (Amy Hill) and old recordings...

Sophomore seasons are notoriously difficult to navigate.
And yet a Hulu comedy serving as dramedy with a stellar cast and strong writing continues to be a critically-acclaimed delight, certified fresh at 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, returned arguably better than ever.
It's a series with a healthy dose of family dysfunction, two cousins who are genuinely trying to manage things like their mental health in an authentic way that feels true to form for men, and a working-class element that feels authentic, as the characters grapple with the day to day and their respective life choices.
But no, this time, we're not talking about The Bear. And make no mistake The Bear Season 2 was certainly worth talking about, and we've still been discussing it.
We're actually talking about the critically-acclaimed, clever, and irreverent but criminally underpromoted and underrated This Fool.
Essentially, This Fool is one of the best comedic series not being discussed.

Hulu's streaming series, This Fool depicts working-class Latinos in South Los Angeles in hilarious fashion. In season 2, the old-school cholo Luis (Frankie Quinones) and his cousin Julio (Chris Estrada) switch roles with one enjoying life as a slacker and the other wanting more out of life in the hood. Costume designer Rocio Estrada says she brings authenticity through the wardrobe and shops locally from mom-and-pop stores in the Los Angeles area.

Those fools from the hood are back in season 2 of the extremely funny Hulu series, This Fool. The irreverent comedy starring Chris Estrada, Frankie Quinones, and Michael Imperioli, perfectly captures life in South Central. The quirky characters decide to open up a new coffee shop, "Mugs Not Thugs" and of course, there are shenanigans that will have you rolling on the floor although the laughs are not as consistent as last season.

If I have one complaint about the critically acclaimed first season of Hulu's "This Fool," it's how masculine it is. Yes, there are a handful of women characters, but we don't see much of their interiority or get their fully formed individual storylines. They are all constricted to relationship roles - the main character's mom and his girlfriend. My issue lies in the show's outlook as well - it's a decidedly male aesthetic. To be clear, "This Fool" isn't a misogynistic show by any means, just one focused on a guy and his cousin.
The problem, of course, is that male creators, directors, and actors over-index in movies and TV. They've long been able to share their perspectives with the world. This gets even more complicated when you layer in race and ethnicity. Latinas are among the least represented segments of the population when compared to our actual numbers in the US.

It would be possible to do a list of the best TV episodes of 2022 without placing any restrictions on it. That list would probably include five or six Atlanta episodes (including “The Goof Who Sat By the Door,” “Work Ethic!” and “Snip Hunt” from the final season), another three or four episodes from Reservation Dogs (including “Stay Gold Cheesy Boy,” “Mabel” and “Offerings”), and at least as many from Better Call Saul (out of 13 episodes, choose almost any one), Barry (starting with “710N”) and Better Things (take the series finale and work backwards). And that would be the list!
So instead, as usual, we set one simple if arbitrary restriction: no episodes from shows on either of our Top 10 lists. So between our lists — Dan’s Top 10 and Angie’s Top 10 — that eliminated 17 shows. But these are 10 great episodes (in alphabetical order by...

There's a bittersweet reality that comes with the life of an actor. There can be seasons where it feels like the roles are just flowing in by the second, and then there are quieter seasons - Michelle Ortiz knows both quite well. Being a Latina with no connections or hookups in the industry, the actor has always worked that much harder at any role she's ever landed. It's that resilience and the commitment she continues to dedicate to her craft that helped her land her latest role as Maggie on Hulu's "This Fool," which released on Aug. 12. Ortiz beautifully marries both her skills as a comedian and as an actor who can deliver drama in a way that really highlights how nuanced Maggie is as a character. She's an independent woman but in many ways also very codependent on her on-and-off boyfriend, Julio (played by standup comedian Chris Estrada...

When This Fool creator Chris Estrada set out to make a show about a man from South Central Los Angeles, he knew there'd be some critics. "I'm always skeptical when I see something that I think I relate to," the comedian told E! News, "kind of being like, 'Did they get it right?'" But as time went on, his worries about viewer opinions faded into the background. Instead, Chris focused on what he knew he could get right, i.e. growing up in the L.A. community. "I was more concerned about how this is being authentic to my own life," he said, "and the neighborhood I grew up in, the people I knew and stuff like that." With this in mind,...

The basics of “This Fool” are straightforward and familiar enough. Hulu’s new comedy stars stand-up comedian Chris Estrada as Julio, a 30 year-old who lives with his strict mother (Laura Patalano) and not-so-secretly badass grandmother (Julia Vera). He’s restless in a job he likes just enough to keep; he pines for his wild card ex-girlfriend, Maggie (Michelle Ortiz), even though he knows they’re probably terrible for each other. He resents his cousin, Luis (Frankie Quinones), who represents his opposite in just about every way. He’s bored and confused about where he wants his life to go, but not so motivated that he’s making any moves towards fixing anything, really.
Needless to say, TV’s no stranger to such 30-year-old dilemmas. So “This Fool” — co-created by Estrada and “Corporate” producers Pat Bishop, Matt Ingrebretson, and Jake Weisman — is smart to lean in to what sets itself apart...

There’s a scene in the first episode of Hulu’s This Fool that lays out in efficient detail just what sort of dynamic we’re dealing with here. It’s morning in the Lopez household, and Julio (series co-creator Chris Estrada) is indulging in his morning coffee ritual: hand-ground beans, a gooseneck kettle, a Chemex. His cousin Luis (Frankie Quiñones), meanwhile, dumps a pile of instant coffee into a mug, shoves it into the microwave, and calls it a day.
Theirs is the sort of odd-couple relationship that’s been sustaining comedy since at least, well, The Odd Couple — and it’s one winning enough here to keep This Fool coasting on an even keel through the mean(ish) streets of South L.A.

While considering the winning new Hulu comedy This Fool, the hardest question to answer is this: Who is the titular fool?

Michelle Ortiz is pulling double duty, lighting up the screen and the stage.
Between you and us, she's one of the primary scene-stealers in Hulu's upcoming working-class Latin comedy, This Fool, based on stand-up comedian and executive-producer Chris Estrada's life.
We caught up with Ortiz to discuss the relatable aspects of this raunchy, irreverent comedy, subverting Latina roles with her character Maggie and her debut in King Liz. Check it out!
I watched this show. It's funny. It's racy, sort of off-brow, and feels very Californian, Latin, and working-class. What attracted you to this project, and how did you get involved?
Well, first of all, that's a loaded question because when people ask, "How did you pick this project?" I didn't actually pick it; I auditioned for it and hoped I would book it!
It is very California. It's based on the working middle class in South L.

Known for his sketch comedy and podcast series “Who’s This Now?” (2014), stand-up comic, Chris Estrada, has mostly been something of an underground cult sensation in comedy. But that’s about to change with “This Fool,” a new series he co-created for Hulu, inspired by his life, his stand-up, and how he dealt with relationships, high school, money, and more. A half-hour comedy with a cinematic single-camera comedy lens, “This Fool” is set to have ten episodes and centers on Julio Lopez (Estrada), a 30-year-old who still lives at home.

Exclusive: This Joka, a stand-up comedy series exec produced by Will Smith, will not be returning for a second season on Roku.
The streaming service launched the series, which came via its acquisition of short-form service Quibi, in March.
The series features a raft of stand ups including Punkie Johnson and Chris Estrada.
Deadline understands that the decision had nothing to do with the Oscars incident, where Smith slapped comedian Chris Rock on stage, but a somewhat unusual issue with timing.
Roku is believed to never really have had the option to renew the series, which is produced by Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith’s Westbrook Studios and Topgolf Entertainment Group. The option to renew lapsed before Roku launched the show, and certainly before the streamer had the chance to analyse its viewing data, meaning that it was unlikely to return for a second season on the platform.

Hulu and the producers behind “The Handmaid’s Tale” are starting to hold discussions about the future of the show, as it prepares to return to production for Season 5. Over the next few months, a decision will be made on whether this will be the show’s final season, as attention turns to sequel series “The Testaments” and how “Handmaid’s” feeds into it.
As it heads into its fifth season, “The Handmaid’s Tale” — currently Emmy-nominated for best drama, an award it won in 2017 — continues to grow in viewership for Hulu. In a world where streamers rarely share data, Hulu did confirm that viewership for Season 4, which concluded on June 16, was up 32% over Season 3. It was the most-watched series on Hulu every week throughout this past season (which launched in April), including both originals and non-originals, according to the streamer.
It’s probably no surprise, then, that the show’s intense finale — no spoilers here,...
