Donald Glover and Francesca Sloane are bringing Mr and Mrs Smith to the small screen, here’s the trailer.
2005 was a good year for action films. Jet Li gave one of his greatest performances opposite Bob Hoskins in Unleashed and Christopher Nolan kicked of his iconic trilogy with Batman Begins.
Another hugely successful film that year was Mr And Mrs Smith. It saw Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie play a married couple who, unbeknownst to each other, are both world class assassins. The film originally cast Nicole Kidman to star opposite Pitt, but scheduling conflicts with The Stepford Wives meant she had to drop out.
Doug Liman directed the film from a screenplay by Simon Kinberg, and while it is by no means perfect, it remains a hugely enjoyable, rollicking ride.
Now, Donald Glover and Francesca Sloane have brought the story to the small screen.
The synopsis reads as follows:...

A closer look at the lead actors in the movie, Honk For Jesus. Save Your Soul. sets the stage for an entertaining masterpiece. As the movie progresses, it metamorphoses into a satirical exposé of the hypocritical, extravagant, and sometimes scandalous activities that have plagued some megachurches in the past decades. The storyline focuses on a black community megachurch pastor and wife forced to close their church when the pastor is enmeshed in a sex scandal. The Ebo twin sisters did the movie — Adamma Ebo wrote and directed the movie, while Adanne Ebo was the movie’s producer. The lead roles

Have you had experience with evangelists who are not really Christian, but focused on making profit from their congregation? That’s why on today’s episode director Adamma Ebo, her sister, producer Adanne Ebo, actor/producer Daniel Kaluuya, and I discuss the satirical dark comedy, Honk For Jesus. Save Your Soul.
The film stars Regina Hall as Trinitie Childs – the proud first lady of a Southern Baptist megachurch, who together with her husband Pastor Lee-Curtis Childs (Sterling K. Brown), once served a congregation in the tens of thousands. But after a scandal forces their church to temporarily close, Trinitie and Lee-Curtis must reopen their church and rebuild their congregation to make the biggest comeback that commodified religion has ever seen.

Film premiere and headlines spilling from a trio of fests in full swing (Venice), just starting (Telluride) and queued up (Toronto) have indie exhibitors and distributors the most hopeful since Covid hit that a stream of new films could fire up the arthouse market.
Tod Fields’ Cate Blanchett-starrer Tár (debuted to a six-minute standing ovation in Venice), Timothée Chalamet in Luca Guadagnino’s Bones And All (also just screened on the Lido), and Empire of Light with Olivia Colman, set to world premiere at Telluride, and a raft of others are slated for fall theatrical release. A deluge of specialty films from Sundance and Cannes will also move into U.S. cinemas later this month.
“Arthouse theaters are behind where they were in 2019, but I think this fall things will come racing back. These festivals have the goods,” said John Vanco, Gm of New York’s IFC Center.

Growing up in southern Black megachurch culture in Atlanta, Ga, identical twins and filmmakers Adamma and Adanne Ebo saw both the beauty and the messiness within the complex community — enough to inspire a satirical comedy years later, they tell TheWrap in a spoilery interview about the resulting film and its themes.
Their new Focus Features comedy “Honk for Jesus. Save Your Soul” (which is now playing in theaters and streaming on Peacock) paints a glorious picture of the luxurious life led by Pastor Lee-Curtis Childs, played by Sterling K. Brown, and his wife, Trinitie, played by Regina Hall: a loving marriage, political influence, designer wardrobes and a loyal congregation. When a scandal threatens to take their church — and them — down, the pair is determined to salvage their success with an Easter Sunday re-opening and welcomes a documentary to capture their comeback journey.

Honk For Jesus. Save Your Soul. is a brilliant new satire based around organised religion, and marks a really exciting venture for sisters Adamma and Adanne Ebo, who takes on directing and producing roles, respectively. To mark the film’s release in the US, and it’s launch on streaming service Peacock, we had the pleasure in speaking to both sisters, as well as one of the film’s leading stars, Nicole Beharie.
We discuss challenging powerful organisations, and the balance in being barbed and satirical, but appreciating the sensitive ground on which this film stands. We also discuss the art of improvisation, which was encouraged here, and collaborating with leading stars, the brilliant Sterling K, Brown and Regina Hall. Watch both interviews, in their entirety, with Nicole Beharie and the Ebo sisters, below.

Actors Sterling K. Brown and Regina Hall are linking up to bring a megachurch powerhouse couple to life in "Honk For Jesus. Save Your Soul." The mockumentary film has some strong names behind it, with both Jordan Peele and Daniel Kaluuya serving as producers with their respective companies.
"Honk For Jesus. Save Your Soul." is a feature-length adaptation of writer and director Adamma Ebo's 2018 short film of the same name. The story follows Pastor Lee-Curits Childs (Brown) and his wife, First Lady Trinitie Childs (Hall), amid the fallout of a scandal that dismantles their status as leaders of their congregation.
While the film sounds like it could easily be centered around real people, "Honk For Jesus: Save Your Soul." is not based on a true story. It is, however, inspired by real life. Read on to learn about the inspiration behind the film, which hits theaters and Peacock on Sept.

After Labor Day, we get into September and the fall movie season proper. This also means that “festival season” begins in earnest with some early Oscar favorites. Read on for Gold Derby’s September 2022 box office preview.
Theatrically, we seem to have at least one horror movie every single weekend after Labor Day. Unfortunately, we also only have a few movies that have the potential to open over 20 million, so it’s going to be another tough month at the box office.
Note: We won’t be doing the normal weekend preview this week, since there’s only one new movie opening over Labor Day weekend. That movie is Adamma and Adanne Ebo’s comedy satire “Honk for Jesus. Save Your Soul.” It stars Sterling K. Brown (“This is Us”) and Regina Hall as the disgraced pastor of a large community church and his First Lady dealing with the backlash...

Will Spider-Man be able to save the box office … again?
Yes, you’re reading this in August of 2022. And yes, there’s actually a chance that “Spider-Man: No Way Home” will return to the No. 1 spot on domestic box office charts … roughly eight months after the superhero adventure swooped into cinemas and revived the theater industry. Sony is rereleasing the film — which has already grossed an astounding 804 million in North America and 1.9 billion globally — in 3,850-plus theaters over Labor Day weekend, this time with a glorious 11 minutes of extra footage. Thank you, Peter Parker!
How, pray tell, is it possible that December release “Spider-Man: No Way Home” could end up presiding over domestic box office charts in the final stretch of summer? Well, it’s not that surprising if you consider the reality that studios have all but abandoned the big screen in August after ticket sales rebounded at the start of popcorn season.

This fall, the comedy Honk For Jesus. Save Your Soul. — starring Regina Hall and Sterling K. It will introduce viewers to two sharp and funny filmmakers, actually: Identical twins Adamma and Adanne Ebo, 31-year-old double Geminis from Atlanta, Georgia, who grew up playing basketball at the same sprawling house of worship where their film was shot. “I’m not sure what double Gemini means,...

Regina Hall chooses her words carefully when asked about Will Smith’s recent video in which he apologized for slapping Chris Rock at the Oscars.
“I think it’s a tough thing and I know it’s a difficult road,” Hall told me Monday at the premiere of her new comedy mockumentary, “Honk for Jesus. Save Your Soul.” “The first step is he apologized. How people see it, it’s up to them…I know that wasn’t easy.”

Focus Features has dropped a funny first trailer for the upcoming film Honk For Jesus. Save Your Soul.
In their Sundance review, RogerEbert.com says: “Hall and Brown help us perceive the many masks of these people, and Hall is especially good at the razor-sharp “bless your heart” niceness that has her fighting for pride and an image. Brown gets some great comedy out of his intensity, but is also able to let the true pain shine through. The best moments in “Honk for Jesus. The star-making business behind Southern Baptist megachurches is now getting a big screen twist.
Regina Hall and Sterling K. Brown star in the 2022 Sundance breakout comedy “Honk for Jesus, Save Your Soul,” written and directed by Adamma Ebo and executive produced by Jordan Peele. The mockumentary premieres in theaters and on Peacock September 2.
Amid allegations of misconduct, Pastor Lee-Curtis Childs (Brown) tries to revitalize his church after the scandal forced the congregation to temporarily close. Ahead of World Refugee Day on June 20, Unhcr, the Un Refugee Agency has released “Uprooted,” a powerful short film featuring and made by Ukrainian refugees now living in Germany. Some 50 refugees from Ukraine, including writers, choreographers, designers, casting producers, styling assistants, set dressing, make up, music and all the talent featured in the film, were involved in the project.
“Uprooted”, released Monday on Unhcr’s social media platforms, is being shown in select cinemas across the U.K. It was directed by Stink Films’ Andzej Gavriss who wrote the concept with Ukrainian choreographer, Konstantin Koval and Don’t Panic London’s creative partner, Rick Dodds. Sometimes magnetic, sometimes awkward and disjointed, Honk for Jesus, Save Your Soul spotlights a unique culture: that of black mega churches in the southern USA. As the movie presents it, this is a world where pastors insist they need the most ridiculously expensive, colorful and showy suits imaginable, and their “first lady” wives seek out bizarre hats to make an equally status-based impression. The whole Christianity thing sometimes feels like an afterthought.
Writer/director Adamma Ebo, who collaborated with her sister and producer Adanne Ebo, grew up attending these kinds of churches in Atlanta, Georgia. She not only has an eye for the absurdity of the culture, but a sense for how the community relies on these churches to help define their identity, and how a lack of integrity on the part of leaders affects everyone.

Twin sisters Adamma Ebo and Adanne Ebo made their feature film debut at Sundance with “Honk for Jesus. Save Your Soul,” a faux documentary inspired by their Southern Baptist upbringing in Atlanta.

Have you ever heard of praise miming?
It’s a style of praise dance popular in some Black churches, where performers swap lyrical movement for miming and often wear mimes’ traditional white face makeup. This form of worship plays a central role in “Honk for Jesus, Save Your Soul,” the Sundance stunner from identical twin sisters, writer-director Adamma and producer Adanne Ebo.
Their film follows pastor Lee-Curtis Childs (Sterling K. Brown) and his first lady Trinitie (Regina Hall) as they aim to rebuild their congregation after a scandal effectively closes their Atlanta megachurch, which maxed out around 26,000 worshippers. The pastor and first lady hire a documentary crew to chronicle their comeback, but the road to redemption — especially in the competitive business of corporatized and commodified Christianity — doesn’t prove easy.

2022 was supposed to be different: The return of the physical component of the Sundance Film Festival, with requirements such as fully boosted attendees and regular testing, was meant to return. But after omicron’s surge, the festival is now entering its second straight year as strictly a virtual affair. Nevertheless, from year to year, there’s always a difference at Sundance. It’s the films. And in this case, films directed by Black creators.
We’ve combed through this year’s lineup to select 10 exciting long-form works directed by Black folks, most making their feature debuts, which compose a diverse assortment of stories that survey academia, policing, systematic bias, anti-capitalist, and anti-colonialist themes from a uniquely Black perspective. Here are the exciting Black-helmed projects, from incisive docuseries to adventurous feature films, to look out for at this year’s Sundance.
Curious about how to re-create the magic of Sundance at home?...

The youth-skewing network has handed Praise Petey (w/t) from SNL head writer Anna Drezen, who created the series, and exec producers including Monica Padrick, Mike Judge and Greg Daniels a series order.
