“No Cover,” a new competitive series backed by production entity Hit Parader, is promising to deliver the “next great unsigned original artist.” To aid in the search, the televised show has recruited celebrity judges Alice Cooper, Bishop Briggs, Gavin Rossdale, Lzzy Hale and Tosin Abasi.
Differentiating itself from shows like ABC’s “American Idol” and NBC’s “The Voice” — which mainly focuses on a singer’s interpretations of preexisting hit songs — “No Cover” judges artists and bands performing entirely original music. Season one will be shot inside West Hollywood’s legendary Troubadour and on location at the Sunset Marquis Hotel.
The winning artist or band will secure a six-figure recording contract with Sumerian Records, booking agency representation from UTA, management from the Shelter Music Group, festival slots via Danny Wimmer Presents, studio time at Nightbird Recording Studios (housed inside the Sunset Marquis), new gear from Gibson, branding endorsements, licensing opportunities and more.

Carrie Underwood aside, country radio has embraced former “American Idol” contestants only reluctantly, as if they were averse to sharing the credit for launching an act. A few have managed to last, though: Underwood’s an arena headliner and a radio mainstay for 15 years now, and Scotty McCreery and Lauren Alaina, who finished 1-2 on “Idol” in 2011, also seem to have won over programmers.
Gabby Barrett can go on that list, too. Barrett, who finished third on the 2018 edition of “Idol” as an 18-year-old, recently made that ascent with “I Hope,” making her the first solo female singer since Carly Pearce in 2017 to reach No. 1 on the country airplay charts with a debut single.
That acceptance may be because Barrett follows so closely in Underwood’s footsteps, the older singer might want to steer clear of “All About Eve” for a while. Barrett’s breakout single essentially rewrites Underwood’s signature hit “Before He Cheats.

Mother’s Day brought a flurry of emotions to “American Idol” as viewers voted the top five down to the top three, bringing the audience — and the contestants — even closer to the finale.
This week, contestants were mentored by former ” Idol” winner and country star Carrie Underwood. The remaining five each gave two performances — one of Underwood’s songs, as well as a second song choice centered on the theme of the holiday.
During the last live taping of the season, voters sent Gabby Barrett, Maddie Poppe and Caleb Lee Hutchinson to the final round, while Cade Foehner and Michael J. Woodard completed their journey on the show.
Barrett called working with Underwood “unbelievable.”
“I don’t have words to put into that because I’ve looked up to her my entire life. I’ve just watched everything that she’s done as a person [and] as an artist. I was like,...

Sunday night on “American Idol’s” Top 5 performance episode, host Ryan Seacrest introduced Carrie Underwood as the “most successful” winner in the show’s history — sorry, Kelly Clarkson! Country superstar Underwood won “American Idol” Season 4 against rocker Bo Bice in 2005, and she’s kept busy over the past 13 years with her family life and winning seven Grammy Awards. Underwood served as a mentor this week to the Top 5 — Gabby Barrett, Caleb Lee Hutchinson, Maddie Poppe, Cade Foehner and Michael J. Woodard — and also performed her new single “Cry Pretty” live, complete with glittery pink eye makeup in the shape of tears. Watch the official music video above.

The “American Idol” reboot is quickly drawing to a close, eliminating two contestants on Sunday night (May 13) and leaving the top three — Caleb Lee Hutchinson, Maddie Poppe and Gabby Barrett — to duke it out next week for a two-night finale. Leaving the ABC show tonight were Cade Foehner and Michael J. Woodward.
The night was divided into two parts: for the first hour, the five finalists were each tasked with singing a Carrie Underwood song — the season 4 winner was the celebrity mentor for the week — and for the second half, song choices were catered to Mother’s Day.
Where Poppe shined was with her second performance, “God Only Knows” by the Beach Boys. Though she was last to take the stage, which could have negatively impacted her vote, her consistently adventurous song choices have clearly resonated with audiences.
Caleb Lee Hutchinson played it a little safer, staying in the lane...
