Slave narratives felt like horror stories long before "Antebellum" combined its Civil War setting with the themes of a story like "Get Out." But the makers of the 2020 film do want to make one thing clear: While "Antebellum" certainly doesn't shy away from the horrors of the era, it's not actually a slave movie.
That may feel counterintuitive for a film that seems to revel in its gruesome setting. With its first act, "Antebellum" answers an age-old, horrifying hypothetical: "What if the South won the Civil War?" It drops us face-first into what could be a parallel reality, one where white supremacy reigns. It'd be easy to write "Antebellum" off as a slave movie based solely on what's happening on the surface — but a closer look reveals a handful of anachronisms sprinkled throughout the Antebellum-set film. Slaves bear tattoos and nose piercings; the spirituals they sing while picking cotton...

Despite the pandemic, movies are still coming out in Fall of 2020. Here’s everything we can look forward to being released before the year is over.
“In a year when most movies release dates come with an asterisk attached, making plans for what you’d want to see in the fall is more complicated than ever. Trying to confirm which potential blockbusters and awards favorites will actually play in theaters can be as confusing as figuring out the plot to Tenet, the new Christopher Nolan movie you may or may not have seen. Luckily, we’ll help you sort through the chaos.”
Read more at Thrillist.
The new horror movie Antebellum is so focused on the message it’s trying to send that the film’s story became secondary.

“The past is never dead. It’s not even past.” – William Faulkner
Directors Gerard Bush and Christopher Renz begin their hybrid horror film Antebellum with this quote from William Faulkner’s story “Requiem for a Nun.” The line, specific about the history of the American South, describes how the past still haunts the present. When Barack Obama used a variation of that line during a speech in 2008, it framed William Faulkner’s environment of the South and how the legacy of racial atrocities found in history still linger so prevalently today.
It doesn’t take much to find horror in the world these days. Amid a global pandemic, the makings of a horror film already, the injustices happening across the world continue to pile on one right after the other. And cinema, consistently one of the best mirrors of present times in the world, has taken to genre film to discuss and dissect the issues.

When the premise for Antebellum was first announced, many wondered whether it was based on Kindred, the 1979 novel by Octavia E. Butler. The film follows successful author Veronica Henley after she is abducted and finds herself thrust back into the antebellum time period. Forced to live life on a plantation under the name Eden, she comes up with a plan to get back to the life she knew before it's too late. So yes, both Antebellum and Kindred have a Black woman writer and author as a protagonist who seemingly shifts between her modern-day life and life on an antebellum-era plantation. However, this is where their similarities end.
Kindred actually finds main character Dana going back in time and focuses on Dana's connection to the past as she tries not to succumb to the horrors and hopelessness of slavery. Dana has to rely on her ancestors in order to survive,...

Antebellum has been steeped in mystery from its first trailer, and for good reason. The film, which premiered on Sept. 18, follows successful author Veronica Henley after she is abducted and thrust back into the antebellum era. Forced to live life on a plantation under the name Eden, she works to come up with a plan to get back to the life she knew before it's too late.
When I watched the trailer, I thought there might be supernatural forces at work when it came to Veronica's abduction and transformation into Eden. I even thought there were ties to Octavia Butler's classic 1979 novel, Kindred, which follows a young Black writer who finds herself thrown back in time from 1976 to a pre-Civil War Maryland plantation, but I was wrong on both counts. I had high hopes for the film, with all that buildup and a star-studded cast featuring Janelle Monáe. Unfortunately,...

While the premise of “Antebellum” has been shrouded in mystery, activist filmmakers Gerard Bush and Christopher Renz (credited as Bush + Renz) worked with their crew to deliver a wild ride delving into the current climate of racism.
In choosing to deal with the pandemic situation, “Antebellum” will only be available on VOD in the United States, beginning Sept. 18, even though it will see a theatrical release internationally. “It’s still not the same,” Bush says, “Because the movie is for America.”
“We consider ourselves activists who use art to communicate our very specific point of view and amplifying a host of issues that felt urgent,” says Bush, who worked with his partner and crew to deliver the story of an accomplished woman trapped in a horrifying reality.
Janelle Monáe stars as Veronica Henley, the woman caught in this mind-bending mystery somehow connecting to Eden (also Monáe), a Civil War-era enslaved woman.

Horror can take many forms. It can be a masked man with a knife stalking babysitters. It can be a demonic force that terrorizes a group of teenagers at a cabin in the woods. It can also be something that is part of our history. Antebellum tells the story of Veronica Henley/Eden (Janelle Monáe), a woman who is kept as a slave under a cruel and vicious Southern slave owner. Yet it's a difficult movie to define the plot in simple terms as the story takes a few intriguing…...

The provocative and timely thriller/pseudo horror film Antebellum arrives at a particularly divisive time in American history that, perhaps mirrors the period it depicts so splendidly onscreen. As the country struggles to finds its moral way amidst a tide of social change that seems to be pushing the ideals of the Constitution aside for those of individuals, this film serves as a reminder of exactly what this country is capable of when it lives up to its potential and what it can be if it fails to do so as well.
Set in a pseudo-what if the South had won the Civil War American horrorscape, the film follows author Veronica Henley (Janelle Monáe) as she becomes trapped in an alternate reality that may just be too much for her to survive. This is achieved most effectively by thrusting the viewer into the horrors of slavery for the first third...

Gerard Bush and Christopher Renz’s Antebellum begins where you can rightly expect a film with a title this brash to begin: on a plantation. This is the kind of movie that makes a point of throwing its audience, to say nothing of its characters, into the deep end.
And so, in the disconcertingly smooth and showy tracking shot that opens the movie, we’re treated to American chattel slavery’s greatest hits, the summarizing details spilling out onscreen like a neat cascade of bullet points. The proud march of...

There are many villains in Gerard Bush and Christopher Renz’s feature debut “Antebellum,” but none quite as vivid as Jena Malone’s nefarious plantation owner Elizabeth. A nasty piece of work in her own right, the character also emblematizes the forces of oppression that power the film’s narrative. Built upon a consciously convoluted timeline, complete with editing misdirection and a chopped-up storyline, “Antebellum” follows Janelle Monáe as both successful modern author Veronica Henley and antebellum-era slave Eden, presenting the wholly different experiences of two Black women, until the film mashes them together in unpredictable ways.
Suffice to say that Veronica and Eden intersect (to get into deeper detail would spoil the film), and while they are bonded by a litany of shared problems, none feel as immediate as the evil Elizabeth. It’s the kind of role that seems scary for a performer: Not only is she such a monster,...

It’s been said about the Civil War that the South lost the war but won the narrative, rewriting history to soften its motives while enacting laws to uphold a uniquely American form of apartheid. In the face of more than a century and a half of such malignant propaganda, terrifying social thriller “Antebellum” lands like an explosive mortar — by being forced back into bondage.
How could any form of slavery still be possible in the year 2020? That’s the haunting enigma at the heart of this mind-blowing — and incredibly timely — horror movie from activist writer-directors Gerard Bush and Christopher Renz, who saw their astonishing feature debut delayed by the coronavirus, only to resurface all the more relevant as the Black Lives Matter movement surges anew.

The word that caused so much trouble for the country band that now wants to be known as Lady A isn’t a problem for the movie “Antebellum,” because the last thing the Gerard Bush and Christopher Renz drama wants to be is a romanticization of the pre-Civil War South.
In fact, it’s pretty much an attack on the antebellum world in the guise of a horror thriller — or, to be more precise, an attack on our world in the guise of a horror thriller about the antebellum world.
That makes the Lionsgate release, which was supposed to have received a theatrical release in April before that was scuttled in favor of a Sept. 18 VOD premiere, an extremely timely film. Within the thriller structure is an exploration of racism in America that manages to incorporate the social justice movement, a Confederate flag, white-nationalist conspiracy and even a statue of Robert E. Lee.

If movie theaters are planning to reopen in select locations around the country in the next month, will there be any new movies out there left to program? In another case of another movie biting the dust, Lionsgate has decided that the best course of distribution financially for their movie Antebellum is to have the movie premiere on premium on-demand platforms on Sept. 18, as Covid-19 safety protocols currently bar New York, California and other stateside cinemas from reopening. Antebellum will not get a simultaneous theatrical release in the U.S., however, will be released in select offshore markets. Janelle Monae is dealing with a time-traveling nightmare of slavery in Lionsgate’s latest trailer for the horror film “Antebellum.”
In the footage released Thursday, Monae portrays modern-day author Veronica Henley, shown explaining how women are the future: “We’re expected to be seen, not heard. But we are the future. Our time is now.”
But suddenly, she’s being transported back into the 19th Century as a slave in the Southern United States to come face-to-face with her ancestors. The trailer’s tagline asks: “What if fate chose you to save us from our past?”
“Antebellum” comes from the producers of “Get Out” and “Us” and is directed by Gerard Bush and Christopher Renz, also known as the team of Bush+Renz. Monae’s co-stars include Marque Richardson II, Eric Lang, Jack Huston, Kiersey Clemons, Tongayi Chirisa, Gabourey Sidibe, Rob Aramayo, Lily Cowles and Jena Malone.

Janelle Monáe plays an author trapped in a time-twisting mystery in the new trailer for Antebellum, the latest thriller from the producers of Get Out and Us. The thriller opens in theaters April 24th.
Arriving three months after the film’s first teaser — which, at 59 seconds, is 17 seconds longer than the trailer — the new Antebellum glimpse is even more mysterious than its predecessor, with Monáe transported between present-day and pre-Civil War era, the two realities often blurring. The trailer also scales back the horror elements that percolated in the teaser.

The minute-long preview doesn’t provide much insight into Antebellum’s top-secret plot, instead offering a foreboding series of images and sounds blending modern-day technologies and the pre-Civil War period — with Monae’s Veronica caught between the two realities.

In Janelle Monáe’s latest film, a horror movie called “Antebellum,” the horror she’s living stems all the way back to the slave period in American history.
The first teaser for “Antebellum” begins with a black woman running through a field and screaming in agony while in the distance some men in confederate uniforms chase her down on horses. But all the while, the only sounds we hear are the modern day noises of a plane flying overhead and a 911 operator desperately trying to help whomever is on the other side of the line.
The film specifically stars Monáe as successful author Veronica Henley, finds herself trapped in a horrifying reality and must uncover the mind-bending mystery before it’s too late. There’s also a creepy little girl in Civil War-era clothing who probably has something to do with whatever nightmare Monáe’s character is living through.
