New Line Cinema Sues Video Company Over 'The Golden Compass'

Film studio New Line Cinema has filed a multi-million dollar copyright infringement lawsuit against a video company over a documentary about The Golden Compass author Philip Pullman. The movie studio claims the 70-minute DVD film, Beyond The Golden Compass: The Magic of Philip Pullman, is an attempt by company Koch Entertainment to cash in on the publicity surrounding the new $180 million big-screen adaptation of the writer's fantasy novel, which stars Nicole Kidman and Daniel Craig. The movie is due to hit cinemas in December - while the DVD was released on November 19, and by Koch's own admission, is to "coincide with the big-budget film adaptation." And New Line Cinema has also called into question the similarity of the DVD's cover sleeve to the film's publicity posters - the documentary cover features an unarmored Polar Bear and a compass-like device; the same as the movie's promotional material, which also depicts Kidman and Craig. But Koch Entertainment has denied the copyright claim. The two parties met for a hearing in a New York court on Monday, but a ruling has yet to be made.

I've become even more popular than I was playing Captain Kirk. I'm good box office and I get publicity
But, they are going in a different direction and it'll be a wonderful film." Shatner's Star Trek sidekick Leonard Nimoy will be the only original cast member on board for the prequel - he'll reprise his role as Mr. Spock in the film.

Coen Brothers Forced To Import Fake Blood All the Way From England

Filmmaking siblings the Coen Brothers were forced to spend a small fortune shipping specially-designed fake blood from England to their No Country For Old Men set in New Mexico - to keep predators at bay. The brothers balked when they saw the costs for the blood the costume experts insisted on, but quickly realized the goo had to be something special. Joel Coen explains, "We had a lot of extras that had to lie around in the baking sun covered with blood on the desert floor essentially for hours at a time. The make-up department was buying this special blood, made in England; make-up blood that was something like $800 a gallon. I wanted to know why they were doing that instead of just mixing food coloring with Karo syrup, which they usually do, and I was told this blood had no sugar in it. This was important because the extras would be lying there for hours and wouldn't be attacked by creepy bugs and animals that might otherwise be attracted to the sugar."
