Amazon.co.uk Review
There's something about the Sinbad saga that elicits the best from a composer. The Arabian Nights spent at the writing desk definitely result in something extra special--witness the Sinbad scores from Mikl--s R--zsa (The Golden Voyage of Sinbad) and Bernard Herrmann (The Seventh Voyage of Sinbad). Roy Budd, however, was better known for his in-the-groove jazz scores like Get Carter and Fear Is The Key. So where did such a huge symphony of fantasy come from? His "Main Title" just reeks of magical orientalism. As that blends into "Ghouls" there are spooky whistles, a spanking rhythm, cymbalom and shakers all convincing of Eastern mysticism. The raga-like belly dance of "Thru The Village" is even further geographical highlighting with its tambourine, fiddle, and pipes. All of which is to say you not only know where you are for the movie's locale, you also know Budd got right into the spirit of things. After having musically accompanied Patrick Wayne tackling giant mosquitoes, a sabre-toothed tiger, and a walrus, it's pleasing that the composer could put the Stravinsky styling aside for some tenderness in "Preparing" and even craft a wry comedy motif for "The Prince As A Baboon". --Paul Tonks
