A performer since childhood (she was widely known then as "Cuddles"), pert and pretty, raven-haired Lila Lee was brought to Hollywood by Paramount mogul Jesse L. Lasky and debuted in a starring role with The Cruise of the Make-Believes (1918) as a poor girl supported by a rich admirer. Following her appearance as a servant wench in Cecil B. DeMille's Male and Female (1919), Paramount starting grooming her to eventually supplant the highly temperamental and troublesome Gloria Swanson. Lila's talent, however, was lighter in weight and, though she enjoyed great popularity in such films as Blood and Sand (1922) with Rudolph Valentino, Another Man's Wife (1924), The Midnight Girl (1925), Love, Live and Laugh (1929) co-starring George Jessel and The Unholy Three (1930) opposite Lon Chaney, Swanson had little to worry about. A series of bad judgments and highly publicized bouts with illness led to Lila's swift decline. She made a few dismal comebacks on stage and in TV soaps in the 1950s but to little fanfare. Her last picture was as a hayseed mom in the deservedly obscure Cottonpickin' Chickenpickers (1967). Her actor-turned-writer son James Kirkwood Jr., however, earned fame on his own for penning the play "P.S. Your Cat Is Dead" and the musical "A Chorus Line." Lila died of a stroke in 1973.- Costume Designer

- A grand master of the sleight of hand was the illusionist and conjurer Richard Valentine Pitchford. Fascinated by magic from early childhood, Pitchford perfected his card manipulations in the trenches of World War I and while recovering in a Southampton hospital from wounds received in combat. After being mustered out, he unsuccessfully tried his hand at ventriloquism, then made ends meet as a stoker in the engine room of a tramp steamer. Pitchford eventually arrived in Australia as a steward on a passenger liner and it was there that he first acquired his reputation as a first-rate magician, having wisely adopted the catchy stage name 'Cardini'. Typically attired in top hat, cape, monocle and white gloves, Cardini proceeded to tour Australia and then Canada. He arrived in the United States in 1926 and soon delighted audiences with intricate magic routines using cards, billiard balls, thimbles, lighted cigarettes and cigars, often assuming the persona of a tipsy London gent. He played at packed venues -- including Radio City Music Hall and the London Palladium -- to perfectly choreographed music and stage effects. Cardini performed no less than eight times at the White House (F.D.R. used to refer to him as "The Suave Deceiver"). In 1933, he entertained the King of England at a Royal Command Performance. The Welsh-born master conjurer was thrice elected president of the Society of American Magicians. He died in New York in November 1973 at the age of 77.

A member of the Circus Hall of Fame, Con Colleano is in the Guinness Book of World Records as being the first person to ever successfully attempt a forward somersault on a low-wire tightrope. The son of an Irish bare-knuckle boxer and an Aboriginal woman, Con and his family put together a traveling troupe of high-wire walkers, jugglers, and clowns that eventually left Australia for America and other exotic places. For years, Colleano, masquerading as a Spaniard, walked the tightrope in many exotic places for Cole Brothers Circus and Ringling Brothers/Barnum & Bailey Circus. Dressed in a toreador's costume, Colleano, with his wife Winnie (a dancer and skilled trapeze artist), and members of his family who were part of the act would dance a bolero, and show his acrobatic expertise with an amazing repertoire of movements, including dance moves and twists and turns.- Richard von Frankenberg was born on 4 March 1922 in Darmstadt, Germany.
