- Dallas-born Tim Choate considered himself better qualified as a theatrical performer than as a screen actor. The University of Texas graduate had indeed a solid background in stagecraft, having performed on Broadway (including 300 performances in the Pulitzer prize-winning 'Crimes of the Heart') and the Long Wharf Theatre in New Haven, Connecticut, where he starred in 'The Philanthropist'. He also appeared alongside Stacy Keach in Peter Sellars's 1986 New York production of Robert E. Sherwood's 'Idiot's Delight', as a French communist (according to the New York magazine reviewer, sporting an impenetrable 'nouvelle' accent!).
On screen, Tim had a long association with Merchant/Ivory films, making his debut in The Europeans (1979). However, it was in a TV production, where he was to have a singularly popular impact. In an interview, he explained, that he felt comfortable in heavy make-up and using diverse accents, citing actors Paul Muni and Robert De Niro as among his role models. He added, that, by becoming chameleon-like, it became easier to 'take risks' with his performances. Thus he developed the character of Zathras in Babylon 5 (1993), a pivotal recurring role (with full prosthetic make-up) which did much to illuminate the complex story arc of the series between seasons one and three. According to Choate, he 'channelled' the accent of Zathras within minutes of the audition while waiting in a parking lot. Zathras was also played with a wonderful sense of impromptu humour which endeared this character to audiences worldwide. Sadly, Tim Choate died aged just 49 as a result of a motorcycle accident while on his way to rehearsals for the play 'Macbeth' at the Globe Playhouse. - Sonia Sorel was born on 18 May 1921 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA. After graduating from high school, Sagan studied at the Sorbonne in Paris. While she was still studying, she wrote her first novel at the age of 17: "Bonjour Tristesse" was published in 1954 and caused a scandal with its explicit depictions of sex, which soon made her known worldwide as a writer. The writer published under the pseudonym Sagan, which referred to a character in Marcel Proust's novel. She received the Prix de la Critique for her debut novel, which became a bestseller with translations into 22 languages. As a result, Sagan became France's most successful bestselling author, writing more than 40 novels and plays. Her best-known titles include novels such as "Aimez-vous Brahms" (1959), "Les Merveilleux Nuages" (1961), "Un orage immobile" (1983) and "Le Mirroir égaré" (1996).
Some of Sagan's novels have also been made into films. She herself wrote the script for Claude Chabrol's film "Landu" (1963). After her first marriage to the publisher Guy Schöller, Sagan was married to the sculptor Robert Westhoff, with whom she had a son and from whom she also divorced. Due to her excessive lifestyle, Sagan was considered a colorful figure of celebrities and upper society. Gambling, alcohol and drug addictions as well as sometimes serious traffic accidents repeatedly brought them into the headlines of the tabloid press. Sagan also got into trouble with the judiciary because of tax evasion. Since her author's income was seized by the tax authorities, the writer found herself on the verge of financial ruin towards the end of her life.
