- A typhoon delays drilling in Asia as J.R.'s loans become due. Cliff resigns from the Office of Land Management to run for Congress. Ellie makes a massive sacrifice to save Southfork and Ewing Oil, but blames J.R.
- Bobby Ewing's worst fears are realized when Farraday is murdered but a much worse blackmailer takes his place, his brother, J.R. With copies of Christopher's adoption records in his possession, J.R. realizes that he is probably the real father and now he can force Bobby to do his will so that Pam will never find out.

Sue Ellen manages to get her hands on some alcohol even in the sanatorium and escapes in a car, only to get into an accident.
- Bobby asks Jenna to marry him and she eagerly accepts, Clayton pushes to wed Miss Ellie before J.R. and Jessica can interfere, and Pam and Mark's future clouds over after she receives some tragic news.
- J.R. recovers in the hospital. Bobby takes over Ewing Oil. Sue Ellen worries because she blacked out the night J.R. was shot. Alan Beam is brought back to Dallas for questioning and Cliff is detained by police and suspended from the D.A.'s office. Lucy meets a med student named Mitch.
- Cliff goes nuts at JR & Sue Ellen's dance, resulting in half the wedding party taking an unscheduled dip in the pool. Afton later admits to Cliff her part in his securing the purchase of his oil refinery from Gil Thurman and Bobby reveals his knowledge of JR being behind Harwood Oil.

- After a phone call from South America devastates Miss Ellie, J.R., Bobby, and Ray fly down there to try and find Jock. They find his medallion.
- When Bobby and Ray pull a sting operation on Driscoll, JR starts dancing for the Cubans as he tries to retrieve his money, leaving Driscoll to rot in jail. Bobby finds out that Pam had lunch with Mark Graison and Lucy grows closer to Mickey Trotter, compelling her to be honest with him about what happened with Roger. Katherine proposes a deal to JR that would benefit the both of them.

Infuriated, she packs her bags and leaves Southfork, ready to leave the Ewing name behind and spend her life with another man. Meanwhile, Bobby tries to find solace in something other than a bottle and Cliff can't get over the self-blame for the death of his mother. Donna begins to realize the serious effects of JR moving in on a senatorial seat in Washington when Dave talks to her about it because he feels threatened by the notion.
- J.R. uses Lucy as a cat's paw in his plot against Peter and Sue Ellen. Pam tries to rush Mark into a quick marriage, but he wants a big wedding. Miss Ellie and Clayton host their engagement party. Jessica's jealousy has a sharp edge.

- The fight for Ewing Oil goes to the courts with the Ewing brothers confident that Amanda's evidence will prove more powerful than the documents Cliff and Jamie possess.
- When Cliff announces that he's running for State Senate, it puts the Ewing clan on high alert and gets a candidate of their own. Things get ugly when Pam inadvertently tells Jock and Jr about Cliff's past relationship, both in the political ring and between Pam and Cliff, itself.
- Bobby enters a deal that will get Ewing Oil back into the cartel, but for which he doesn't have the promised capital. Mitch's mother and sister, Afton, arrive in town for the wedding. J.R. takes an interest in Afton, which worries Sue Ellen.

But when JR blabs about where Jock's whereabouts to Miss Ellie, it is SHE who takes matters into her own hands when it comes to the affairs of her marriage.
- J.R. and Sue Ellen go to court to decide custody of John Ross. Miss Ellie tells J.R. that she won't stand for any mudslinging and attends the hearing to see if he obeys.
- J.R.'s counter-revolution brings the oil wells back under private control, which reconciles him with the cartel. Ray proposes to Donna. Mitch and Lucy continue to fight over money. Sue Ellen discovers Dusty Farlow is alive.

Afraid he might not make it out of the encounter Jock confides a secret to J.R. and asks him to do something that might bring J.R.'s recent shady dealings to light. Back at the ranch Miss Ellie takes advantage of the men's absence to make a worrying doctor's appointment.
- Jock's death has a devastating effect on J.R. and Bobby has to cover for himself as well as his brother in running Ewing Oil. J.R. is unable to deal even with the simplest of business demands in his grief.
- J.R. has Ray arrested during one of his binges then shows up at jail and persuades a distraught Ray to sign over his ten voting shares in Ewing Oil. Cliff discovers J.R.'s plot to get him a phony job with Olco Industries.

- With Jock's will pitting them against each other, J.R. and Bobby prepare to do battle to prove who is the best man and entitled to Ewing Oil. Miss Ellie is in the middle as her two sons square off and Ray is happy that he is now on par financially with Donna.
