His association with Williams estranges him from his wife but earns him the trust of Hisston and the other spies. When the conspirators are ready to enact their plan, he travels to Panama with them. He thwarts their attempt at sabotage, saving the canal and the fleet. He is then reinstated into the Navy, reunited with his wife, and honored by the nation for his heroism
- After his mother and stepfather have been killed in a barge accident, John Breen is rescued from some East Side toughs by the Lipvitches. He remains in the city, determined to find his real father, who rejected his mother; and after some success as a prizefighter, he is virtually adopted by Van Horn, a millionaire who actually is his father. Becka Lipvitch renounces his love when Pug Malone advises her that their marriage would endanger his future. John becomes engaged to Josephine, Van Horn's ward, and rejects the boxing ring for an engineering career. While returning from Europe, Van Horn is drowned when his ship sinks; Josephine and Rantoul, finding consolation in each other's love, are rescued and are married. Meanwhile, John rescues Becka from Flash, a nightclub owner and narcotics peddler, and they are reconciled.

- Wild brothers Jimmy and Billy Roberts are disinherited by their wealthy father after being arrested for street brawling. Jimmy joins his crook friends, while Billy abandons his dissolute ways and gets a job as a telephone lineman in the town of Midvale. There, he falls in love with telephone operator Betty Blair, but her grandmother demands that she marry a rich lawyer named Kilmaster. The lawyer becomes jealous of Billy, and when he discovers that a private detective has been asking questions about the lineman, he spreads rumors that Billy is a criminal character. Meanwhile, by coincidence, Jimmy and his pals arrive in Midvale, cut a local bank's telephone wires, and rob it. When Billy hurries to the bank to repair the wires, he discovers which way the robbers have fled and alerts police. Jimmy, meanwhile, becomes separate from his gang during the getaway and ducks into the telephone building, which is on fire because a stray bullet fired during the nearby bank robbery broke a lamp. Jimmy and Betty become trapped in separate rooms. Jimmy telephones his ailing mother long distance with a final message before a wall caves in on him. When Billy telephones Betty with the message that the gang has been cornered in the next town, she tells him she is trapped in the fire. Jumping on his motorcycle, Billy rushes to the telephone building and carries the unconscious Betty to safety. He learns that his father, who found him through the private detective, wants to help him financially, but Billy turns down the offer, happy to be the breadwinner in his marriage to Betty.
- Daniel Gilchrist, assistant rector in a fashionable church, preaches a sermon in which he exhorts his congregation to emulate the life of Christ by giving up worldly possessions in order to find spiritual happiness. Because of this radical point of view, Gilchrist is dismissed from his post and deserted by his fiancée, Clare, who soon marries millionaire's son Jerry Goodkind. Daniel starts a mission, and there Clare, who has been badly hurt by her husband's open and callous infidelity, comes to do volunteer work. Jerry accuses Clare of infidelity, and she comes to Daniel to seek solace; Daniel then bids her return to her husband and find solace through service to Christ. Hennig, a distraught miner who believes that Daniel seduced his wife, incites a mob to burn the mission; the mob beats Daniel and their fury only abates when Hennig's wife Pearl confesses that the man who seduced her was Jerry Goodkind. A small child, crippled since birth, sees Daniel lying on the ground bleeding from the fury of the mob's unthinking blows, and haltingly walks to him; the crowd declares that it has seen a miracle. Jerry is emotionally shaken by the events, and his wealthy father comes to see that a truly Christian life is the only path to happiness on this earth.
- Mark Sabre hires young Effie Bright to keep his snobbish, cold-hearted wife Mabel company while he goes off to war. When he returns home from the front wounded, he finds that Mabel has fired Effie, who shows up at Mark's door with her baby, having no place to go. Mark takes her in, but Mabel leaves him when the town shuns him for what they believe is going on with Mark and Effie. Matters are further complicated when Effie, driven to desperation, commits an unspeakable act that results in Mark having a nervous breakdown--and then things get worse.

Though her father is persuaded to make the sacrifice of effacing himself so as not to ruin her chance for social success, she discovers the relationship and brushes social considerations aside to be reunited with him.
