Geraldine Seagrave ( Elsie Ferguson ) and her brother Scott ( Edmund Burns ) have inherited the family estate after their father's death along with his predisposition for the bottle . They live a secluded life until Geraldine is the right age for her coming out party. During the party, prospective suitor Jack Dysart ( Crauford Kent ) prompts Geraldine to take a drink, and the girl ends up embarrassing herself in front of an old friend , Duane Mallet ( Mahlon Hamilton ). Duane's sister Sylvia ( Gertrude McCoy ) who is still very much in love with Jack , seeks Geraldine's help in winning him back.
