- Professional safecracker Fancy Charlie breaks into the apartment of G.B. Lawson, a criminologist, and mistakenly believes that he has robbed a fellow safecracker. Out of "professional courtesy" he informs Lawson of what he has done. Instead of calling the police, Lawson--who believes in the philosophy of "honor among thieves"--makes a deal with Charlie: to show Charlie that it's actually more profitable to be a legitimate businessman than a crook, he'll give Charlie some money if Charlie will use it to establish a legitimate business in the small town of Plumfield, and at the end of a year they will divide up whatever profits Charlie is able to make honestly. Charlie agrees, but soon discovers that things won't be quite as easy as he thought.—frankfob2@yahoo.com
- "Fancy Charlie" is in the process of robbing a safe, when he discovers some tools inside which lead him to mistakenly believe the owner of the home is also a crook. When the owner, Lawson, confronts him, Charlie admits he cannot rob a fellow thief. Lawson goes along with the charade, and Charlie strikes up a friendship with him, expressing his wish to work for a master crook. Lawson offers to show Charlie some tricks of the trade. He gives Charlie $5000 and sends him to the small town of Plumfield, where Charlie is to take the name "Honest" John Smith and start a business. Lawson promises to show up after an agreed upon amount of time and "make a killing" with Charlie. Charlie goes to Plumfield, establishes himself by entering business with the Fanchettes. He falls for their bookkeeper, Nellie. Charlie decides to go straight. When Lawson arrives in Plumfield, Charlie offers to pay back the five thousand dollars. When Lawson discovers the townspeople are planning to elect Charlie the mayor of Plumfield, he demands a percentage of the profits. He threatens to expose Charlie's past unless Charlie agrees. Angered, Charlie goes to election headquarters with Lawson, and confesses all to the townspeople. The people cheer, and Charlie then discovers that Lawson is a state senator and criminologist who was using Charlie as a test case. Charlie is elected mayor, marries Nellie, and settles down in Plumfield.—scsu1975
