Following the tremendous success of Grandma's Boy, Harold Lloyd immediately began on a brand new feature comedy, Dr. Jack. Dr. Jack is a simple comedy, a film purely made for laughs and nothing else-but-the film does give a potent message to its viewer. Lloyd plays Dr. Jackson, the town doctor who is friends with everyone in the neighbourhood. At the start of the film, Harold receives an urgent telephone call from a little girl who cries out "Come Quick, Dr. Jack. Mary is dying!" Harold tries his utmost hardest to get to the little girl's home and when he eventually gets there, he finds out that Mary is the little girl's doll who has fallen down a well. Harold, anxious to make the girl happy again, performs resuscitation on the doll and all is well. But the film's actual storyline is about the sick-little-well girl, played by Mildred Davis, whose family think she's awfully sick, just so Dr. Ludwig von Saulsbourg (Eric Mayne), can still continue to get his pay cheque from the girl's wealthy father. Harold eventually meets Mildred and fall in love. Harold then realises what is really happening in the household when we see the close-up of a gun being fired and Mildred's family and servants start panicking. Mildred peers through the window and with a smile on her face, asks Harold in a gallant mood, "Isn't it exciting". Harold then tells Mildred's father that she is not sick, it's only excitement that she needs in her life. Harold then thinks up a plan. He dons a Dracula like looking costume and runs around the dark house scaring everyone. The scene is terrific because Lloyd's characters don't always do these type of things. And so later on, Mildred uncovers Harold to the family and they both know that she never had any illness of any kind, except loneliness, which has been rid of because of the great man with the glasses and straw hat. Many believe that Jobyna Ralston is Harold Lloyd's best leading lady and that maybe so because she might've possessed a little bit more talent than Mildred Davis. However, in Dr. Jack, it is fair to say that Mildred Davis is absolutely superb in her part. She plays her scenes really well with a delightful tenderness and sometimes with sympathy that is obviously crucial for a role such as hers in this film. Although Dr. Jack is one of Lloyd's lesser-known features, it is still one of his funniest, as always.
