Trying to get Hollywood to change direction is not unlike trying to steer an elephant by poking it in its thick-hided ass with a matchstick; it doesn’t exactly respond like a Maserati.
And that’s a problem because there are some box office signs suggesting the American movie industry needs – may, in fact, desperately need, and soon – to change the path it’s been cannon-balling along on since the late 1970s. Unfortunately, Hollywood’s history suggests nobody should hold their breath waiting for someone to turn the wheel until after that bus has gone over a cliff. American moviemaking is great at glomming on to technological innovation – Dolby sound, 3-D, CGI — anything that brings in a crowd by offering a showier show. The industry’s track record on what to do when the crowd stops coming — on divining and interpreting and appropriately responding to changes in the cultural landscape — is,...

Hector Jimenez has been cast in Fox's hourlong pilot "The Emancipation of Ernesto," while Brian White has joined TNT's drama pilot "Men of a Certain Age."
Additionally, Christina Moore has come on board the CW's new drama series "90210" as a recurring.
"Emancipation" centers on Ernesto (Wilmer Valderrama), a guileless innocent embarking on an epic quest to find his father amid a Los Angeles landscape polluted with excess. Jimenez ("Nacho Libre") will play Hilario, a pragmatic day laborer who was reared in the same prison as Ernesto.
"Men" explores the bonds of male friendship through the eyes of three college buddies, Joe (Ray Romano), Owen (Andre Braugher) and Terry (Scott Bakula), who are in their 40s.
White ("Moonlight") will play Marcus, a charming salesman at Owen's dad's car dealership who gets promoted to sales manager when Owen is overlooked by his father. He is repped by UTA and Luber Roklin.
On "90210," Moore ("Hot Properties") will play Tracy Bennett, the mother of Naomi Bennett (AnnaLynne McCord). Described as a "Beverly Hills Milf," Tracy shares a past and some secrets with Harry Mills (Rob Estes).
Moore is repped by Gersh and Artistry Management.
