Actor and humanitarian Gary Sinise, who is most famously known for his portrayal of Lt. Dan Taylor in the landmark film Forrest Gump, was announced today as the 2018 Tournament of Roses Grand Marshal.
Sinise will ride in the 129th Rose Parade presented by Honda, themed “Making A Difference” and participate in the pre-game celebration of the College Football Playoff Semifinal at the Rose Bowl Game presented by Northwestern Mutual. Both are held on January 1, 2018.

Long before he became Canada’s crush-worthy prime minister, Justin Trudeau was a crush-worthy teacher — and he’s got a #Tbt photo to prove it.
Trudeau, who for years taught math, French, drama and humanities at Vancouver’s West Point Grey Academy, shared a throwback photo of himself as a young teacher on Thursday in commemoration of World Teachers’ Day.
“…no better day for a #Tbt to this gem from the @wpgadotca days – an undisclosed number of years ago,” the prime minister tweeted.

Donald Malarkey, a World War II veteran portrayed by Scott Grimes in the Emmy-winning HBO miniseries Band of Brothers, has died, reported the Associated Press. He was 96.
Malarkey died on Saturday in Salem, Oregon, of age-related causes, his son-in-law told the AP.
As a paratrooper, Malarkey was awarded the Bronze Star for his heroics on D-Day in 1944, according to the AP. He parachuted behind enemy lines at Normandy, destroying German artillery.
He was a member of the Easy Company — the Army company profiled in the 2001 American war drama — with whom he fought in the Battle of the Bulge in December 1944.

Everyone notices the eyes first, languid, those of a somnambulist. Robert Mitchum, calm and observant, is a presence that, through passivity, enamors a viewer. His face is as effulgent as moonlight. The man smolders, with that boozy, baritone voice, seductive and soporific, a cigarette perched between wispy lips below which is a chin cleft like a geological fault. He’s slithery with innuendo. There’s an effortless allure to it all, a mix of malaise and braggadocio, a cocksure machismo and a hint of fragility. He’s ever-cool, a paradox, “radiating heat without warmth,” as Richard Brody said. A poet, a prodigious lover and drinker, a bad boy; his penchant for marijuana landed him in jail, and in the photographs from his two-month stay he looks like a natural fit. He sits, wrapped in denim, legs spread wide, hair shiny and slick, holding a cup of coffee. His mouth is...

Despite the Pittsburgh Steelers’ decision to not take the field for the national anthem during their Sunday game, a single player struck out on his own – and quickly became one of the names at the center of the controversy surrounding the #TakeAKnee movement that’s sweeping the NFL.
Alejandro Villanueva – starting left tackle for the Steelers – stood alone outside the tunnel entrance to Soldier Field in Chicago during the national anthem on Sunday, with his hand over his heart.
The rest of the Pennsylvania-based team remained further back in the tunnel, out of view – a decision head coach Mike Tomlin announced ahead of the game.

David Michôd’s War Machine marks Netflix’s second assessment of America’s Middle Eastern strategies in barely a month. Fernando Coimbra’s Sand Castle questioned Iraq-war involvement, and now – weeks later – attention is diverted to Afghanistan, 2009. It’s all based on Michael Hastings’ non-fiction “The Operators: The Wild and Terrifying Inside Story of America’s War in Afghanistan,” an exposé that “questions” General Stanley McChrystal’s 2010 shot-calling. The names may have changed from page to screen, but the message is retained. When invading a foreign land, how is one supposed to broker peace? It’s a confused tactic; one that blurs the rules of war. Good thing a colorful cast of jarheads are there to “make sense” of it all.
Brad Pitt stars as General Glen McMahon, the 4-star legend whose duty is to declare a victorious end to Afghanistan’s ongoing retaliations. Shouldn’t be too hard since the “Glenimal” (yes,...

Ed Sheeran visited a village in Liberia as part of his 2017 Red Nose Day contribution. During his trip, the singer chatted and got to know kids who had been impacted by the West Africa Ebola breakout in 2014. What follows is Sheeran’s account.
When I told friends I was going to Liberia most of them said “Why?” quickly followed by “Be careful.”
Comic Relief had invited me to make a film for Red Nose Day and I really wanted to put my own spin on it. I’d visited Ghana earlier in the year with friends and everyone I met had been so positive.

Television is a fast-paced business, where a show can be written, developed, ordered, cast, produced, and aired all within the course of a year. But sometimes, executives get ahead of themselves and shows are announced prematurely, or circumstances change, forcing delay.
IndieWire combed through some high-profile TV announcements from the past few years that haven’t yet seen the light of day, and asked their status. Some are still in the works; some are still “in development,” which could be code for “we don’t want to admit yet that this show is dead”; and some have quietly faded away.

Better late than never, right?
We waited three full seasons for Judge Woodhull to finally (finally!) choose kin over king and in Turn: Washington's Spies Season 3 Episode 10, he didn’t disappoint.
The best part of his choice (as much as I love Abe) was the look on Simcoe’s face when he realized that the Judge was propping up his son’s legs instead of pulling them down to ensure a quick death.
Technically, it was the second time Abe escaped death after having a noose around his neck. The Judge also stopped the first attempt, insisting on holding a trial.
Now, Abe may not be a good spy, but he’s a great BSer.
How many times this season has he talked his way out of no-win situations with Maj. Hewlett, Robbie Rogers and even Cpt. Simcoe?

Damn, Jj Feild is a good actor. At five different times in Turn: Washington's Spies Season 3 Episode 9, his Major John Andre suddenly realizes that he knows nothing and is completely shocked by pretty much everyone with whom he comes in contact.
You would think when his former lover Philomena told him that she’s pregnant, at least his eyes would register a bit of surprise. Nope. He didn’t even flinch!
What would have been an unnerving revelation for most men (past or present) turned out to be the least shocking part of Andre’s day.
Shock No. 1: Major Hewlett barges in (in the most polite way possible, of course. Miss you already, Major!) to reveal to Andre the identity of the real Culper, and to remind him that the Rebel Spy Abe Woodhull was being entertained by Andre himself a few months back.

What sets A Thunder of Drums apart from many of the indistinguishable Westerns of the period is its downbeat storyline and intelligent script, which was clearly geared for adults as opposed to moppets. There's also the impressive cast: Richard Boone, George Hamilton, Charles Bronson, Arthur O'Connell, Richard Chamberlain and Slim Pickens among them. The film opens with a sequence that was very unsettling and shocking for its day: an Indian attack on a tranquil homestead. A little girl is forced to witness the gang rape and murders of her mother and teenage sister. The plot then shifts to the local fort where commandant Boone is overseeing an understaffed cavalry contingent that has to find and defeat the marauding tribe, which has already slaughtered numerous settlers and soldiers. The Indians are window dressing in the story: nameless, faceless adversaries who are not given any particular motivation for their savagery. (These was, remember, far less enlightened times and such conflicts were generally presented without nuance.)
George Hamilton is the by-the-book West Point graduate assigned to the fort as Boone's second-in-command. He gets a frosty reception from minute one. Boone tells him he doesn't meet the requirements of a seasoned officer who can survive in the hostile environment. The two men spend a good deal of their time in a psychological war of wills. Adding to Hamilton's discomfort is the discovery that his former lover, Luana Patten, is not only living at the remote outpost, but is engaged to one of his fellow officers. The two rekindle their own romance and this leads to scandalous and tragic results.
The film is based on a novel by popular Western writer James Warner Bellah and probably represents the career high water mark of director Joseph Newman, who was destined to toil for decades helming B movies. He gets vibrant performances from his cast. The ever-watchable Boone is in his predictably crusty mode, cynically second-guessing his officers and men, tossing out insults and sucking on an omnipresent stogie. Boone was so dominant in every role he played, one wonders why he never reached a higher status as a reliable box-office figure. Hamilton is in his standard pretty boy mode, but holds his own against macho men Boone and Charles Bronson, who is cast against type as a somewhat dim-witted character of low scruples. Singer Duane Eddy, who was a teenage pop star at the time, made his film debut here with a degree of fanfare, but it was obviously last minute stunt casting as Eddy is given virtually nothing to do except strum a few chords on his guitar. The film boasts some magnificent scenery and some rousing action sequences that are more realistic than those found in most Westerns of the time. A Thunder of Drums isn't art or even a great or important Western - but it is fine entertainment and the Warner Archive edition looks terrific. An original theatrical trailer is included.

Secretary of the Army Eric Fanning "never thought he'd be back" at the Pentagon. The 47-year-old made history last month when the U.S. Senate confirmed him as the first openly gay secretary of a major military branch. He's also the first to have served as a senior civilian executive in all three departments of the Pentagon - the Navy, the Air Force and the Army. But before that, he was a 24-year-old junior aid, working in the building under the Clinton administration. "I ended up leaving because I didn't see there was a future for me as an openly gay man,...

Until now, the Belgian royal family had pointedly chosen to address its subjects (along with the rest of the world) only in German, French or Dutch. But that all changes this week as Belgium's monarchy is now offering an English translation of its website. The revamped site features new family photos, along with a special section for kids, including 'A Day in the Life of the King' and 'What It's Like to Work in the Palace.' And just in case you were wondering who's who among the ruling family of this small but ultra chic European nation, here's a cheat sheet.

Former Gop presidential favorite Herman Cain chimed in on critical media coverage of Ben Carson, calling Politico in particular a bunch of “media vultures.” Cain took to his website to rail against the “lie” Politico perpetrated against Ben Carson, specifically referring to a controversial story the all-things-politics site ran on Friday which initially said Carson fabricated a story about being offered a full scholarship to West Point. “Politico pulled the same dishonest crap on me in 2011,” the former CEO of Godfather’s Pizza wrote, referring to his time on the receiving end of media fire during the 2012 primary campaign, which.

Ben Carson is firing back on all cylinders against what he says are efforts by the media to derail his campaign. The Republican presidential candidate, who is leading in some polls, ripped journalists during a round of Sunday morning interviews for what he called “special scrutiny” of his past. “There’s no question I’m getting special scrutiny,” Carson said on CBS’ “Face The Nation,” as he spoke via satellite from Puerto Rico. Ben Carson fabricated a story about applying to and being accepted into the U.S. Military Academy in West Point, N.Y., a Politico report revealed on Friday. In his 2009 book “Gifted Hands,” the Republican presidential candidate wrote about meeting with Gen. William Westmoreland when he was 17 and being offered a full scholarship to West Point afterward. “Later I was offered a full scholarship to West Point,” he wrote. But his campaign admitted on Friday that wasn’t the case. It's still unclear whether or not Review takes place in purgatory, but it is clear that something strange is definitely going on. Andy Daly, the show's star and co-creator, wrote to Vulture to explain why he might be a god. In last night’s episode of Review, Forrest got a prison-yard pillow fight going, and it caused terrible injuries when people put heavy objects in their pillowcases. This probably seemed familiar to anyone who read about the totally insane freshman-cadet pillow fight at West Point a couple weeks ago, which went down in just about the same way. Here’s an article about that: "Annual West Point Pillow Fight Injured 30." Our segment was shot long before that story broke, so we must have been shocked when we read about such a similar thing actually happening, right? Well, not exactly, because we’re kind of getting used to it. This was hardly an isolated incident.

Joan Crawford Movie Star Joan Crawford movies on TCM: Underrated actress, top star in several of her greatest roles If there was ever a professional who was utterly, completely, wholeheartedly dedicated to her work, Joan Crawford was it. Ambitious, driven, talented, smart, obsessive, calculating, she had whatever it took – and more – to reach the top and stay there. Nearly four decades after her death, Crawford, the star to end all stars, remains one of the iconic performers of the 20th century. Deservedly so, once you choose to bypass the Mommie Dearest inanity and focus on her film work. From the get-go, she was a capable actress; look for the hard-to-find silents The Understanding Heart (1927) and The Taxi Dancer (1927), and check her out in the more easily accessible The Unknown (1927) and Our Dancing Daughters (1928). By the early '30s, Joan Crawford had become a first-rate film actress, far more naturalistic than...

Never content to simply hurl scary, made up facts at the elderly, Fox News recently upped their game...to Murder. Well, attempted murder. During last Sunday's broadcast of Fox & Friends host Pete Hegseth thought he was going to be like, "Watch me hit a bull's eye with my awesome axe throwing, you guys." However he was really like, "Watch me almost kill this drummer from West Point with my terrible axe throwing, you guys." In fairness, accurate axe throwing has never been a core conservative value.

Seriously, folks, we can't make this stuff up. Fox & Friends co-host Pete Hegseth is making headlines after a segment that aired during last Sunday's broadcast which sees the television personality toss an ax to tease a spot on timbersports...only to miss the target and hit marching band percussionist Jeff Prosperie in the background. Before we go any further: yes, the drummer is alive and well. In honor of flag day, the West Point Hellcats marching band played throughout the show, and Prosperie happened to be standing behind the bulls-eye, which was positioned on a large wooden board. Music and Sex: Scenes from a life - A novel in progress by Roman AkLeff (first installment can be read here; second here; third here; fourth here).
Other opportunities to interact with women included the marching band. It wasn't much of a band, but that didn't bother Walter. That meant it didn't take up much of his time. With the occasional exception, the same songs were played at every football game, so one rehearsal per week sufficed. In high school he'd been the third or fourth best trombonist, but here there was just one other trombonist, and they were on par with each other. If Walter felt like skipping rehearsal one week, nobody cared, since the music was easy and he could sight-read it adequately.
Nor did he have to practice marching formations, because they really didn't bother with that. Their formations were a sort of rebellion, illustrations synced to...

In a bid to stay out of prison, former CIA director and four-star Gen. Prosecutors, in a plea deal filed Tuesday in federal court in Charlotte, N.C., where Broadwell lives, are recommending that Petraeus, 62, receive two years of probation and a $40,000 fine in exchange for his admission of guilt on a misdemeanor count of the unauthorized removal and retention of classified material.
