Jetta Goudal, the tempestuous Dutch-born actress who plays Simone, would speak only French on the set. This was her only film for MGM.

This film starring Marion Davies was remade in 1942 by her old MGM rival Norma Shearer. Shearer had appeared as an extra in a 1920 silent film starring Davies. The remake would prove to be Shearer's final film.
While Marion Davies is checking into the hotel at the beginning of the film, the flapper standing next to her is her niece, Pepi Lederer. Her mother was actress Reine Davies who was Marion's older sister. Her father was George W. Lederer, who produced and directed Marion's first movie, Runaway Romany (1917).
Although based on the play "Her Cardboard Lover," this version has virtually nothing to do with the play. It uses the characters of Andre, Simone, and Albine but Marion Davies's character of Sally Baxter is not in the play at all. This is one reason why the title was changed to The Cardboard Lover (1928).
