Stephen says to Lady Carrister that Zeppelins are dropping bombs on Regent Street. The first aerial threat to the UK came from German airships called Zeppelins. At 11,000 feet, Zeppelins could turn off their engines and drift silently to make surprise attacks. On Jan 19, 1915, Zeppelins struck for the first time. Successive damaging Zeppelin attacks in 1915 and 1916 caused public outcry and government embarrassment. UK defense switched from searchlights and anti-aircraft guns to airplanes. Incendiary ammunition for aircraft was developed for bringing down the hydrogen-filled airships. By 1917 Germany began to deploy heavy biplane bombers instead. Over the course of the war, German Zeppelins staged more than 50 attacks on the UK but at a heavy price with 77 of their 115 craft either shot down or disabled.
