When Mrs Crutch is about to give the kids castor oil after the big party - "I'm not going to have a bunch of sick children on *my* hands" - a close-up of the bottle reveals that it came from "Clyde W. Slater, druggist" at the address "Main and Washington Blvd, Culver City, Cal" Those streets are just a few blocks from the site of the Hal Roach Studios, at 8822 West Washington (corner of Washington and National), Culver City, California.
Dick as a child (George Brasno), Mary as a child (Olive Brasno) and Mr. Crutch (Richard Brasno) as a child were brothers and sister.
As usual for the first appearances as a character, Buckwheat's gender is confusing. When the kids get new clothes at the party, Buckwheat wears a very girly type dress, although William Thomas, who played the character, was decidedly male. When his age made it clear, Buckwheat became a male character. No explanation was ever given.
