Who doesn't love a good crossover? Besides the fact that they settle nerds' constant debates of "who would win in a fight between ___ and ___?," there's something so exciting about seeing the main characters of two or more different franchises coming together for the first time ever. Another reason why crossovers have so much appeal with audiences is that there are often legal reasons why characters from one series can't mingle with those of another, making the times when they do meet on the big (or small) screen all the more special.
Crossovers got a massive boost in popularity due to the wildly successful Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, crossovers haven't only been relegated to the superhero realm; for decades, there have been numerous other examples of fictional worlds colliding across numerous genres. In fact, well before Nick Fury appeared at the end of "Iron Man" to tell Tony Stark about the Avengers Initiative,...

Not since Abbott and Costello in Buck Privates in 1941 and Lewis and Martin in At War With the Army in 1950 has a film raised greater concern about who they’re letting into the military these days than does Dog. Although he certainly possesses the requisite physique, Channing Tatum’s Army Ranger Briggs most of the time seems like such a screw-up that you’d definitely want him on the other guy’s team. The power of this Dog lies in its half-canine/half-human buddy comedy, which is genial enough, even if its aim is scatter-shot and its comic tone decidedly hit-and-miss.
Since his appearances in Logan Lucky and Kingsman: The Golden Circle five years ago, Tatum hasn’t been seen in any significant mainstream theatrical films. He did, however, co-produce a 2017 HBO documentary, War Dog: A Soldier’s Best Friend, about special ops canines that led him and longtime production...

The Criterion Channel’s stellar offerings are continuing next month with a selection of new releases, retrospective, series, and more. Leading the pack is, of course, a horror lineup perfectly timed for Halloween, featuring ’70s classics and underseen gems, including Abel Ferrara’s The Driller Killer (pictured above), Tobe Hopper’s The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, early films by David Cronenberg, Wes Craven, and Brian De Palma, Bill Gunn’s Ganja & Hess, and more.
Also of note is a New Korean Cinema retrospective, featuring a new introduction by critic Grady Hendrix and a conversation between directors Bong Joon Ho and Park Chan-wook, whose Barking Dogs Never Bite, The Host, Mother, Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, and Lady Vengeance are part of the lineup, as well as Lee Myung-se’s Nowhere to Hide, and more titles to be announced. Bong’s short Influenza will also arrive, paired with Michael Haneke’s Caché.

The final 12-episode season of Star Wars: The Clone Wars is almost upon us and now Disney+ has picked out 20 of the most important episodes to watch before the show returns in less than two weeks.
It’s a known fact that Star Wars fans are usually divided about almost everything that comes out of a galaxy far, far away. But surprisingly, this has never been the case with The Clone Wars. The critically acclaimed series came to an abrupt end in 2014 with a shortened 13-episode season, but fans have been asking the Mouse House to revive it ever since. As such, everyone collectively freaked out when they learned that Dave Filoni would be back with his hit show to conclude the story, this time in a satisfying way.
In fact, this final run promises to explore the events that lead to Revenge of the Sith and fill in the gaps.

Abbott & Costello – The Complete
Universal Pictures Collection
Blu ray
Shout! Factory
1940-1955/1:33-1:85
Starring Bud Abbott, Lou Costello, Bela Lugosi, Boris Karloff
Directed by Arthur Lubin, Erle C. Kenton, Charles Barton
Two footloose Jersey boys with no particular place to go, Bud Abbott and Lou Costello finally found themselves – literally and figuratively – on the burlesque stage. Their act, equal parts smart talk and ancient slapstick, was honed alongside curvy chorus girls and tassel-twirlers but it took a lady of a decidedly different stature to make them superstars. On March 24, 1938, Kate Smith, “The First Lady of Radio”, invited them to perform “Who’s On First”, a routine delivered with such hairpin curve precision it left listeners breathless. That appearance fast-tracked the duo to their own radio series and a contract with Universal Pictures.

November 19th is shaping up to be a somewhat quiet day for horror and sci-fi home media releases, but that doesn’t mean there still isn’t a lot to get excited about. Synapse Films is giving Dario Argento’s Suspiria the 4K treatment this Tuesday, and it looks to be a must-own release for any genre fan. Scream Factory is resurrecting The Fan (1981) on Blu, and for those of you who are into cautionary horror, you’ll definitely want to pick up Arrow Video’s release of Hitch Hike To Hell.
Other releases for November 19th include Abbott & Costello: The Complete Universal Pictures Collection (which includes their genre crossovers), Farscape: The Complete Series, Memory: The Origin of Alien (a documentary that is a must-see for anyone who enjoys Ridley Scott’s 1979 masterpiece), and a 20th anniversary Blu celebrating the criminally overlooked Jawbreaker.

“Am I decent?” They said that Ginger Rogers gave Fred Astaire sex appeal, but the teaming of Astaire and Rita Hayworth is something else. Columbia’s 1941 release is a weak service comedy until the dancing starts, at which point it becomes one of the better musicals of the year – and the breakout vehicle for Ms. Hayworth.

Last surviving member of the wartime swing trio the Andrews Sisters, whose hits included Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy
Patty Andrews, who has died aged 94, was the lead singer and soloist with the Andrews Sisters. The swinging American trio, comprising Patty and her older siblings, Laverne and Maxene, achieved their greatest success in the 1940s, contributing to the war effort with catchy songs including Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy, Don't Sit Under the Apple Tree (With Anyone Else But Me) and, with Bing Crosby, Don't Fence Me In.
The Andrews Sisters performed at military bases and raised money for war bonds; their hits were sung by the troops and by women working in factories. Patty, Laverne and Maxene accompanied the most popular singers and big bands of the day; enjoyed success not just on radio but also in musical comedy films; and spawned a host of other sister acts – not all of whom were real siblings.

Los Angeles — Patty Andrews, the last surviving member of the singing Andrews Sisters trio whose hits such as the rollicking "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy of Company B" and the poignant "I Can Dream, Can't I?" captured the home-front spirit of World War II, died Wednesday. She was 94.
Andrews died of natural causes at her home in the Los Angeles suburb of Northridge, said family spokesman Alan Eichler in a statement.
Patty was the Andrews in the middle, the lead singer and chief clown, whose raucous jitterbugging delighted American servicemen abroad and audiences at home.
She could also deliver sentimental ballads like "I'll Be with You in Apple Blossom Time" with a sincerity that caused hardened GIs far from home to weep.

Patty Andrews: Last Surviving member of The Andrews Sisters dead at 94 Patty Andrews, the lead vocalist and last surviving member of the Andrews Sisters musical trio, died of "natural causes" earlier today at her home in the Los Angeles suburb of Northridge, in the San Fernando Valley. Andrews, who was also the youngest sister, was 94. (Photo: The Andrews Sisters: Laverne Andrews, Patty Andrews, Maxene Andrews.) Born in Minnesota into a Greek-Norwegian family, the Andrews Sisters began their show business career in the early ’30s, while both Maxene and Patty were still teenagers. Their first big hit came out in 1938: the English version of the Yiddish song "Bei Mir Bistu Shein" (aka "Bei mir bist du schön"), with lyrics — "To me, you’re grand" — by Sammy Cahn and Saul Chaplin. (The song made into the movies that same year, but Warner Bros. star Priscilla Lane is the one singing it in Love,...

Patty Andrews, last surviving member of the Andrews sisters, has died. She was 94 and died today at her home in Northridge, CA. A signature song “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy From Company B” was featured in the 1941 Abbott & Costello film Buck Privates. The perils of an all-volunteer military force have never been as apparent as in Peter Berg's Battleship, which celebrates the heroism of those who served in the past even while it denigrates the intelligence of sailors present. It makes one long for the day when Jerry Lewis was At War with the Army, or Abbott and Costello were Buck Privates. Lewis gets name-checked during the movie, the only point of agreement between Lieutenant Alex Hopper (Taylor Kitsch) and Captain Nagata (Tadanobu Asano, a long way from Funky Forest: The First Contact), who have come to blows during war games conducted by Japan and the United States in the Pacific Ocean near Hawaii. For this single action -- and, apparently, for always arriving late for...

Universal Pictures executives may have had a tough last weekend with "The Five-Year Engagement" underperforming at the box office, but Monday was all about celebrating.
Per a press release, "Universal Film Manufacturing Company was officially incorporated in New York on April 30, 1912." That means this is the venerable film company's 100th anniversary. Party time, y'all!
To honor the centennial, Universal sent out a press release of 100 facts about the studio, 17 of which were kinda awesome. Check out some great Universal Pictures trivia below (via press release); for the full list of facts, click here.

Today marks the 100th birthday of Universal Pictures and to celebrate the studio has released a list of 100 facts based on its first 100 years in existence. I have placed in bold some of the ones I found interesting as well as offered a selection of photo and video accompaniments here and there. 1. Universal Film Manufacturing Company was officially incorporated in New York on April 30, 1912. Company legend says Carl Laemmle was inspired to name his company Universal after seeing "Universal Pipe Fittings" written on a passing delivery wagon. 2. The only physical damage made during the filming of National Lampoon's Animal House was when John Belushi made a hole in the wall with a guitar. The actual Sigma Nu fraternity house (which subbed for the fictitious Delta House) never repaired it, and instead framed the hole in honor of the film. 3. The working title for Et: The Extra Terrestrial was "A Boy's Life.

Chicago – I have a confession — I grew up watching Abbott & Costello movies. I can remember watching them at a very early age and getting into the hysterical verbal jousting of two stellar movie comedians. The timing in some of the best bits from Bud Abbott & Lou Costello is simply amazing. And watching it again, in their breakthrough debut “Buck Privates,” a film in the Universal 100th Anniversary Collection series of Blu-rays and the first Abbott & Costello movie in HD, I was stunned at how much I still loved it. Abbott & Costello rock.

“Roughly speaking.” [Pause.] “When you smooth it out, I got a buck.”

“Roughly speaking.” [Pause.] “When you smooth it out, I got a buck.”
Personally, I find that kind of silly,...

If you're more into cute animals than espionage and explosions, then you'll be interested in a special look at Warner Bros.' crowd-pleasing nature doc "Born to Be Wild." Whether you're DVD or Blu-ray, streaming or rental, Moviefone has the full breakdown on all the home entertainment releases this week. Moviefone's Pick Of The Week "Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol" What's It About? Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol It makes me a little sad I don't really care whether I own Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol or not. It had a few moments I enjoyed, but the film overall was good enough for a one time watch and that's about it. And this is coming from someone that enjoys watching all three of the previous Mission films. Speaking of which, you know you could just buy the first three on Blu-ray for $29.49 and skip the fourth altogether. If I didn't already own the Blu-ray trilogy that's what I would do. And if you wanted to do that, just click here and do it. I support you 100%.
Shame I've watched it twice and it is a great movie, but not exactly one that needs to be part of a home movie collection. Steve McQueen's films just don't scream out for you to watch them again,...

There are few films that stir the heart and soul more than the 1962 classic To Kill A Mockingbird. To commemorate the Oscar-winning film’s 50th anniversary, President Barack Obama will introduce a special broadcast of a restored and digitally remastered print of the film on USA at 8 p.m. Et/Pt on Saturday, April 7.
Starring Gregory Peck as the heroically decent Alabama lawyer Atticus Finch, and based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Harper Lee, the film will air with limited commercial interruption.
In a rare public statement, Lee said she was “deeply honored” that President Obama would be participating in celebrating the film.

Zhang Ziyi in Wong Kar-wai's The Grandmasters
For about a week now, Ioncinema has been counting down its "Top 100 Most Anticipated Films of 2012" — and they're almost there. As of this writing, after 99 individual entries filling us in on all that Eric Lavallee knows about the films he's looking forward to, the title that'll land in the #1 spot remains a mystery. I'll update when it appears, but for now, click the titles to see the files on the top 20 so far:

Universal Pictures is poised for a busy 2012! It is embarking on an ambitious film restoration effort and will be releasing a slew of new special edition Blu-rays. The studio is kicking things off with the release of a new logo to commemorate their 100th Anniversary and will be holding special celebrations at their theme parks this year. Their mantra for this celebration is to make the old seem new again. The studio will be completely restoring 13 films--ranging from 1930′s All Quiet On The Western Front to 1993′s Schindler’s List.
Other films included are as follows: Both 1931 versions of Dracula, Frankenstein (1931), The Bride of Frankenstein (1935), Abbott and Costello’s Buck Privates (1941), Pillow Talk (1959), To Kill A Mockingbird (1962), The Birds (1963), The Sting (1973), Jaws (1975) and Out of Africa (1985). Universal Pictures will turn a century old on April 30, and in advance of their 100th birthday, the studio has trotted out a new (shiny!) logo that touts their triple-digit age. Why they didn’t get Willard Scott to do one of those Smuckers Jam birthday label shout-out things on The Today Show, I simply don’t know, but there’s still time! Of course, that new logo is neat and all (and, again, shiny!), but what’s most exciting about this news is the studio’s announcement that they will also celebrate their centennial with the restoration of thirteen of its most famous films. THR reports that the studio has restored All Quiet on the Western Front, The Birds, Abbott and Costello’s Buck Privates, Dracula (1931), the Spanish-language Dracula (which was filmed on the same set at night), Frankenstein, Jaws, Schindler’s List, Out of Africa, Pillow Talk, Bride of Frankenstein, The...

As part of their 100 year birthday celebration this year, Universal is opening their vaults and remastering some classics for re-release. In all, thirteen titles are in line to get dusted off and prettied up, with some genre heavyweights in the pack. Hitchcock’s The Birds joins Jaws, the English and Spanish DRACULAs (1931), Frankenstein, Bride Of Frankenstein, Jurassic Park, and E.T. in what will make for an exciting year ahead in reissues.
Last year, Universal Studios announced they are scrapping their long-running Jaws theme park ride in favor of a newer flavor, which saddened fans, so some good Jaws news is welcome. Memorial Day 2011 is here and while we should all take time to thank a veteran and active servicemen and women, it also means for us TVphiles - lots of good programming. So either settle in with some popcorn or make sure your DVR is ready to go.
There are movie marathons. Syfy is busting out its greatest hits in the giant monster oeuvre on Friday, followed by "Star Trek" movies all weekend. TCM and AMC are showing nothing but military movies, including classics like "All Quiet on the Western Front," "From Here to Eternity" and "Patton."
If marathons are your thing, you've got everything from "Firefly" and "Doctor Who" to "House Hunters" and "How It's Made." And if you're a sports fan, while the NBA playoffs are on hiatus, you can still watch a ton of baseball, the 2011 French Open or the annual Memorial Day race the Indianapolis 500.
