Let's put on a small town showed... And take it to Broadway!

Warning: Spoilers
Apparently Scattergood Baines has forgotten within a short period of time that he had produced a Broadway show just a year before written a former resident from his hometown. Now he wants to promote Gloria Warren has a new find and doesn't use his own experience to try to influence veteran producer Pierre Watkin can come see her at the show, but is able to convince a complete stranger to go back to his town in the middle of nowhere simply to go fishing.

Even in a small town, there are mean girls and young Helen Parrish is determined to prevent Warren from going on at all costs, mainly because of jealousy over Warren's singing voice and boyfriend Dick Hogan. Warren's mentor, Illinois kinski, is completely against her singing anything other than opera which has held her back. Other obstacles prevent Warren from nearly going on, but being a World War II musical (and sadly not a very good one), everything turns out just fine, except for the audience.

This series had quickly petered out after only six films, much like the Great Gildersleeve and the Dr. Christian series, all decent here and there, but quite dated. A few of the old regulars return for the last film, although there is still no mention of what happened to Scattergood's wife. for some reason, Willie best is back for the last film, replacing Paul White who had played his character as a youngster in the first film of the series.

There's no way that this show would make it on Staten Island in 1943, let alone on Broadway. Gloria Warren had tried but failed in a Warner Brothers A picture the previous year ("Always in My Heart") and audiences had no interest in another Deanna Durbin knock-off. This was quite a step down for her, ironically the third strike in the Scattergood Baines series for a promising ingenue, following Mildred Coles and Susan Peters. This is the one time that Cinderella stays within the ashes, even if fairy godfather guy kidby does get her a ticket to the fictional Broadway ball.
