Bland Cole Porter musical with one hit song.

This is a surprisingly bland formulaic musical. It did earn two Oscar noms, deservedly, for its only competent song, You'd Be So Nice To Come Home To, and its scoring. The score itself (rather lacklustre) was not recognized. The leads try really hard to put this over with their energetic performances (Don Ameche, Janet Blair and Jack Oakie), but they can't pull it off. The plot involves a talentless, newly wealthy, ex-chorus girl, who decides to put on a show. The talented young composer, Blair, is also a dynamic performer and in true All About Eve fashion, the former is "detained" out of town while the latter goes on in her place. The usual accusations and misunderstandings ensue but are all ironed out in the end. Other songs: I Always Knew; Through Thick And Thin; Something To Shout About; Lotus Bloom; Hasta Luego. Cyd Charisse appears in a bit dancing role - her first film. Nothing special.
