According to Ned and Jimmy's uniforms, both are Chief Petty Officers and by the six stripes on their left sleeves, have served at least 24 years in the Navy. Both of their stripes appear to be in gold, rather than in red, indicating at least 12 consecutive years of Good Conduct service.
The blimps featured in this film were the K-class, designated ZNP-K by the U.S. Navy. Goodyear built 134 for the Navy for patrol and anti-submarine warfare use from 1938 to 1945. The last one was retired in 1959.
The aircraft depicted as landing on fire, bringing in Tivall, is a Beech SNB-1 "Kansan", a naval version of the model 18, serial no. 51064, built in 1943. It was converted to a SNB-5 c.1953. It was sold in 1966 and registered as N90251 and scrapped in 1971. Over 9,000 model 18s were built from 1937 to 1970, with over half being military versions.
