  • The film centers around a poor Irish-American family living in a Brooklyn tenement. The father is an alcoholic, which scarcely leaves any chance of finding steady employment, causing tension between him and his wife. While he appears intoxicated in a few scenes, we never actually see him take a drink. Unlike other alcoholics usually portrayed on screen as violent and abusive, the character is usually an upbeat and loving father, but often gives his children false hope for a brighter future. He later dies offscreen from effects of alcoholism and pneumonia.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • Several scenes are very emotional.
  • A woman becomes weak while being in labor, and talks to her daughter as if she were dying. We learn in the following scene that the mother and newborn baby did survive.
