- John Royer: You have to remember, this guy's a German.
- Carnaghan: Yeah, but he's a greedy man, and greed has a nationality all its own.
- The Dutchman: You'd better let me do the talking. Probably the only thing standing between you and eternity is my vocabulary.
- John Royer: [offering boiled coffee to his uninvited guest] My butler got drafted, my Jap boy's interned.
- Kellar: Terrible war.
- John Royer: Sure is.
- The Dutchman: [to his pet cockatoo] One day in your seed will be cyanide, and you'll stop laughing for the rest of time.
- Colonel Genichi Tomura: I'm very sorry to have done this to your acquaintance. You will believe it was necessary.
- The Dutchman: I do not doubt it, if you say it was necessary, my friend. It's a stiff price for a bottle of bad whiskey.
- Colonel Genichi Tomura: Five of my men have been injured, a system has been disrupted, and you would wish me to do nothing about it?
- The Dutchman: A man who does not fight and disrupt a system when he's become drunk has wasted his money. Fighting and drinking is also a part of the system. Not a system I invented. What would have me saying?
- Colonel Genichi Tomura: [chuckles] This is how I admire you. Were it otherwise I would have had him killed. You make it nothing. Yet, there is something about it that I do not like, and do not believe.
- The Dutchman: Give him to me. I'll put him to scrubbing the floor of the saloon. That'll teach him manners. Killing him will teach him nothing.
- Colonel Genichi Tomura: It would give me so much satisfaction!
- The Dutchman: But beating him demands something. Who's learned anything from a dead man?
- John Royer: I told you Malaya. More insects than any place else in the world. But the one that bites the deepest is the same one that gets us all. Money! With the right kind of money and the wrong kind of man, I can get that rubber out for you.
