Gloria Swanson, a legend by the time she made this comeback picture, and playing a legend trying to make a comeback, managed to create an entirely new legend: this picture! Quite a feat, I'd say. Everyone agrees the script is superb, the photography of a high order, the casting and acting masterly, the direction elegant, and so on. There have always been a few who have picked on Ms. Swanson for her allegedly 'grotesque' portrayal, but I discount this emphatically. She is, after all, playing the character of a silent movie queen, from an era of exaggerated gestures, who is by now fairly well demented and trying to recapture the past. What else would one expect? And who could do it better? Is there anyone at all you can imagine in this role other than Gloria Swanson? Let's get serious. This is not High Art, but it is Low Art raised to the nth degree; it is Hollywood myth captured in all its wonderful madness, with just the right dash of satire mixed with a dollop of sentiment, teetering perilously on the rickety border between drama and kitsch, and landing magnificently on its feet to the satisfaction of everyone who sees it. More than this we probably cannot ask of a movie, as those who have so often come to disaster with more pretentious themes have learned to their woe. This is THE 'movie about movies'; by its very nature it feeds on its own subject matter and grows more indisputably classic with every passing year.
