Like several other TV sit-coms of the 1950's, this show began life as a popular radio program. Even when the show was a TV hit, the radio program remained in production, and many of the cast members played their same roles on both the TV and radio versions.

In an interview Eve Arden said that she had received several offers from various high schools to be an English teacher. Even if she were qualified to be a teacher, she said she couldn't afford the pay cut. She was making over $200,000 a year, which was equivalent to about $2,000,000 in 2015.
Though Walter Denton was a high school student, Richard Crenna was already twenty-five years-old when the show premiered. He spoke with a squeaky voice as he had used when it was a radio play.
The popularity of the show made it spawn a film.
