The writers have settled. Actors and companies return to the table this week. The awards season is saved.
This could finally be it. Do we dare even say it? The year of The Great Oscar Comeback.
Everyone with a stake in the Academy Awards has watched with chagrin as the Oscar audience began its long, slow slide from a 2014 peak, with 43.6 million viewers when 12 Years a Slave took top honors. It then crashed to a miserable Covid-low of 10.4 million in 2021, when Nomadland won, before struggling back to a still anemic audience of 18.7 million as Everything Everwhere All At Once prevailed last March.
In all, it’s been a lousy decade for the movie awards game. Rare is the player who hasn’t worried that the fans are gone, just like beaver when the mountain men trapped them out.

Every episode of the classic sci-fi/horror anthology "The Twilight Zone" begins with the introduction of some seemingly normal people, usually in the midst of a seemingly normal day. What they don't realize, of course, is that this will be the day they encounter the strange, the fantastic, and sometimes the horrifying. And just as they begin their journey, the camera pans over to a man in a respectable suit. He looks directly at the audience and explains who these people are, exactly what troubles them (or is about to), and reveals that they are about to enter — you guessed it — "The Twilight Zone."
Exactly what "The Twilight Zone" is, is never made clear. Episodes of the classic series often take place in the real world as we know it, but also sometimes in the distant future, or the distant past, or on other planets, or in the afterlife. They don't clearly connect together,...

Howard Hawks was the Oscar-nominated director who has become a favorite among cinephiles, praised as a master of genre entertainments. But how many of his titles have remained classics? Let’s take a look back at 20 of Hawks’ greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Born in 1896, Hawks had a background in engineering and aviation before turning to filmmaking during the silent era. He proved himself to be a versatile talent, adapting his direct, fast-paced style to a variety of genres, including comedies, westerns, film noir, adventures (“Only Angels Have Wings”), gangster epics (“Scarface”) and war dramas.
Although Hawks often explored the codes of masculinity in films starring Humphrey Bogart, John Wayne and Cary Grant, he was noted for his strong-willed, fast talking female characters, coined the “Hawksian woman.” The battle of the sexes was never more evenhanded than it was in one of his films, thanks to the likes of Katharine Hepburn,...

Reba McEntire is extending her stay on NBC's The Voice with quite a promotion.
The network confirmed the country music superstar would "swivel her red chair" in the fall as a full-fledged coach for The Voice Season 24.
The news comes as Blake Shelton prepares to depart the competition later this month.
McEntire joined the series as a mega mentor this season, and fans have reacted warmly to her critiques of the contestants.
However, that wasn't her first appearance on the show. The Big Sky alum appeared in the freshman season as a team advisor.
She followed that up as a short-term coach in Season 8.
Reba's prominence on the show has increased throughout the years, but this will be the first time she has a red chair.
NBC also announced John Legend, Niall Horan, and Gwen Stefani will all return for the next season in the fall.

Now more than ever, the broadcast networks are feeling the need to change up their typical pilot season strategy.
With existing streaming services like Netflix, Hulu, Disney Plus and Amazon and new competitors like HBO Max and Peacock developing shows year-round, the broadcasters are slowly but surely shifting their plans to include more off-cycle pickups.
“We’ve been pursuing a strategy we’re calling second cycle rather than off-cycle,” says Simran Sethi, executive VP of development and content strategy for ABC Entertainment. “I think the term ‘off-cycle’ to a lot of people in the creative community has historically felt secondary, so it just becomes a part of regular old pilot season that takes a lot longer. So we’re calling it ‘second cycle’ because we’re considering things in two very distinct timelines — one being the traditional cycle that’s happening now … and in the second cycle we’re holding...

Kelley will serve as writer and executive producer on the series, with Ross Fineman and C.J. Box also executive producing. The show will be produced by A+E Studios and 20th Century Fox Television.
Although Kelley cut his teeth on broadcast television — having created critically-acclaimed shows like “The Practice,” “Chicago Hope,” “Ally McBeal,” and “Boston Public” — he...

Howard Hawks would’ve celebrated his 123rd birthday on May 30, 2019. Underrated in his time, the Oscar-nominated director has become a favorite among cinephiles, praised as a master of genre entertainments. But how many of his titles have remained classics? In honor of his birthday, let’s take a look back at 20 of Hawks’ greatest films, ranked worst to best.

Although Hawks often explored the codes of masculinity in films starring Humphrey Bogart, John Wayne and Cary Grant, he was noted for his strong-willed, fast talking female characters, coined the “Hawksian woman.

The ‘other’ Hollywood studio version of the Alamo story is quite good, with strong production values, exciting stunt battle action and something Republic Pictures didn’t manage very often, a solid screenplay. Sterling Hayden is Jim Bowie, this version’s central hero, with great backup from Anna Maria Alberghetti, Ernest Borgnine, J. Carrol Naish, and Ben Cooper. But best of all is that old hay-shaker Arthur Hunnicutt, as the movies’ best and most natural Davy Crockett.

The Night I SwamThe Vienna International Film Festival—or the Viennale, for short—has for many years been a kind of respite, perhaps even a bit of a beautiful secret outside of European cinephilia, for those looking to be invigorated by the ever-renewing promise of cinema. First under the direction of Alexander Horwath, who left the festival in 1997 and in 2002 took the lead of the illustrious Austrian Film Museum, and for the last 21 years under the guidance of Hans Hurch, the Viennale has cultivated that rare thing: A cultural institution that has a distinct and idiosyncratic sensibility of taste. It is a yearly event in which you can find the rare gems of the mainstream vividly mixed with expansive retrospectives, the latest films from major auteurs and exciting debutantes alike, with no fear of short or medium length works, a strong love for the avant-garde and an even more fierce...

Kirk Douglas grits his teeth and goes full macho, wrasslin’ with that beautiful Sioux up in the high country — the Sioux miss in question being the Italian model Elsa Martinelli in her screen debut. Kirk can’t decide if he wants to stay with Elsa, or lead what must be the most shameful bunch of pioneer bigots ever to cross the plains. Walter Matthau and Diana Douglas are standouts in this vigorous action western directed by André de Toth.

The Big Sky Documentary Festival is in Missoula, Mt (pop. 111,807), a college town with roots in lumber and trapping. It’s not where you’d expect to see innovative approaches to distribution. Downtown Missoula still hosts dive bars like The Oxford Saloon, which opened in 1883 and while it no longer serves brains and eggs, is open 24 hours and operates a casino in the back. However, you could just as easily have lunch across the street at Sushi Hana, or at Plonk, where the menu includes purple farro and chicken-fried foie gras. (Plonk’s doorway also hosted a midnight hair-pulling battle between two drunks, broken up by cops clearly familiar with the players.) Now in its 12th year, the hosts at Big Sky play both ends toward the middle: Great doc programming by day, hard-drinking charm by night. The festival opened February 6 with Alex Gibney’s “Going Clear: Scientology and the...

When you interview Danny Trejo, it’s almost impossible to stay on the topic of just one film because of the actor’s constant drive and always growing filmography. If we’re to believe IMDb.com, Danny is currently slated to appear in 21 movies between 2013-2014, and that’s only what we know of. While talking to Danny, he mentioned at least one more film that wasn’t listed, so who knows how many times we’ll be seeing Mr. Trejo in the coming years. Most recently you can catch him in Robert Rodriguez’s upcoming sequel Machete Kills, but I was there to talk about another project Danny is particularly excited about, and that’s the revenge Western Dead In Tombstone.
There’s an aura of badassery that Danny has become known for, playing rough-and-tumble characters like Machete, and he’s become somewhat of an action mainstay, but his...

Kirk Douglas movies: The Theater of Larger Than Life Performances Kirk Douglas, a three-time Best Actor Academy Award nominee and one of the top Hollywood stars of the ’50s, is Turner Classic Movies’ "Summer Under the Stars" featured star today, August 30, 2013. Although an undeniably strong screen presence, no one could ever accuse Douglas of having been a subtle, believable actor. In fact, even if you were to place side by side all of the widescreen formats ever created, they couldn’t possibly be wide enough to contain his larger-than-life theatrical emoting. (Photo: Kirk Douglas ca. 1950.) Right now, TCM is showing Andrew V. McLaglen’s 1967 Western The Way West, a routine tale about settlers in the Old American Northwest that remains of interest solely due to its name cast. Besides Douglas, The Way West features Robert Mitchum, Richard Widmark, Lola Albright, and 21-year-old Sally Field in her The Flying Nun days.

Portuguese maestro Pedro Costa came to the UK at the beginning of October, 2012. He initially arrived in Cambridge University for a screening of the sublime In Vanda's Room, then he traveled down to the capital to take part in a pair of Q&As following presentations of the newly remastered Second Run DVD release of Casa De Lava and a 35mm print of Ne change rien. As Ne change rien played, I sat and waited with Costa in the bar of London's Ica cinema and, with a tape rolling on the table, we started to talk.
David Jenkins: How does the projection look?
Pedro Costa: It's great. It must be the projectionist. The sound and the image are perfectly balanced. The other day I got hold of the first Dcp of Historic Centre and the girl who screened our test was the popcorn girl. Which is okay, but.

Linda Darnell, Ann Sothern, Jeanne Crain, A Letter to Three Wives DGA Awards vs. Academy Awards Pt.2: Foreign, Small, Controversial Movies Have Better Luck at the Oscars Since pre-1970 Directors Guild Award finalists often consisted of more than five directors, it was impossible to get an exact match for the DGA's and the Academy's lists of nominees. In the list below, the years before 1970 include DGA finalists (DGA) who didn't receive an Academy Award nod and, if applicable, those Academy Award-nominated directors (AMPAS) not found in the — usually much lengthier — DGA list. The label "DGA/AMPAS" means the directors in question received nominations for both the DGA Award and the Academy Award. The DGA Awards vs. Academy Awards list below goes from 1948 (the DGA Awards' first year) to 1952. Follow-up posts will cover the ensuing decades. The number in parentheses next to "DGA" indicates that year's number of DGA finalists if other than five.

Cecil summed up the difference between him and his brother, William DeMille, like this: “I show a thousand camels and you show one camel and you psychoanalyze it.” Eric Rohmer is a lot more like William than Cecil, minus Freud.
What is fascinating, foremost, in his work is his obstinacy to not go beyond his only or main subject, often summed up, in a somewhat misleading way, by its title: Béatrice Romand wants a good marriage, or, at least, to help her friend have one (A Tale of Autumn), Brialy wants to caress Claire’s Knee (meaning, to be sure that she is practically consenting), Lucchini,...

By the same turn, it's likely that most big city people would have little interest in rodeos and virtually none in clinics in which people and horses get trained. If this is true, documentaries like Cindy Meehl's "Buck" would be sought out more by people in cowboy land, even though the residents would already know about the subject matter, than by New Yorkers, who, you'd think, might really be curious about life on a different planet.
