Just in time for Succession‘s end, let’s look at method acting. The Criterion Channel are highlighting the controversial practice in a 27-film series centered on Brando, Newman, Nicholson, and many other’s embodiment of “an intensely personal, internalized, and naturalistic approach to performance.” That series makes mention of Marilyn Monroe, who gets her own, 11-title highlight––the iconic commingling with deeper cuts.

Joe Weinstock, Co-President of Brent Montgomery’s Wheelhouse Entertainment label Spoke Studios, has exited to launch a Jv with The Masked Singer UK and Netflix’s Hard Cell super-indie Argonon.

Dunghutti filmmaker Darlene Johnson is the inaugural recipient of Sydney Film Festival and Deutsche Bank’s $20,000 First Nations fellowship.
Aimed at mid-career creatives with a proven track record, the initiative facilitates self-directed professional development or industry placement.
Johnson will work with Aquarius Films to undertake both a producer and director’s attachment, while also developing with the company her own original TV drama concept.
While Johnson forged her early career in documentary with projects like River of No Return and The Redfern Story, in recent years she has shifted back into drama. Her 2015 short film Bluey won Sff’s Event Cinema Australian Short Screenplay Award, and more recently, her directing credits include Aquarius’ Born to Spy, The Heights, Neighbours and Home and Away. She was also in the writer’s room for upcoming Netflix/Peacock drama Irreverent.
For Johnson, the fellowship has come at an opportune time, as she builds her career in long-form narrative.

There are so many categories for the Emmy Awards that the Television Academy hands out the statuettes during three very long ceremonies. But that wasn’t the case with the first Emmy Awards on Jan. 25, 1949. In fact, there were less than a million TV sets in the U.S. at the time.
The Emmys took place at the Hollywood Athletic Club. Rudy Vallee was slated to host the event but had to leave town. So, radio star Walter O’Keefe emceed the proceedings. Tickets were $5. Six awards were handed out including a special award for Louis McManus who designed the Emmy. The ceremony was broadcast on the local L.A. station Ktsl, which is now Kcbs. -TV.

Discovery Channel is removing a five-second scene from Sunday’s episode of “River of No Return” in which a cast member hits a horse with a hammer after PETA issued a letter to Idaho’s Lemhi County Sheriff’s Office requesting a criminal investigation into the incident Thursday.
“That scene will never air again on Discovery,” a spokesperson for Discovery said in an exclusive statement to TheWrap Thursday, regarding any future reruns of the episode on television, online or on the Discovery Go app.
In the scene, which aired on Oct. 27, Ron Ens, a cast member on the show, is seen striking a tethered horse with a metal hammer typically used for horse-shoeing. PETA has also requested that Discovery remove the episode and cut ties with Ens. You can watch PETA’s clip of the scene here.

Exclusive: Andy King, the breakout star of Netflix’s Fyre Festival documentary, who was willing to “do whatever it took” to make the weekend happen, is set to front his own TV project after striking a talent deal with Spoke Studios.
King, who is a high-profile event producer outside of his work with Billy McFarland’s chaotic con-fest, has been a hot commodity since offering his help on the festival. Spoke Studios, producer of Discovery’s Idaho-set doc series River of No Return, has secured a “sweeping” talent deal in a competitive situation.
Spoke is currently shopping a TV series featuring King, who has been likened to being the Tim Gunn of the event production world, to a range of broadcasters and platforms. The company is also keen to leverage King’s frankness and his talent and brand experience across genres from original talk shows, unscripted series and podcasts.

Discovery has greenlit a new series, “River of No Return” — and by the sound of it, it’s not going to be your average camping trip.
The series follows a small community of people who live in Idaho’s remote Frank Church Wilderness, where the only way in or out is by plane — or, for the brave, by boat across the perilous Salmon River.
Lewis and Clark described the river — the largest un-dammed river in North America — as “foaming and roaring through rocks in every direction, so as to render the passage of anything impossible.” The 2.3 million acres of secluded wilderness beyond, also known as “The Frank,” is home to some of the last stretches of undeveloped frontier — and some very steep canyons.

Prototype (Blake Williams)The 36th Vancouver Film Festival recently wrapped, and with it, the second year of the Future//Present program, a selection of eight features (and a number of shorts) dedicated to emerging Canadian filmmakers. If the inaugural edition had the task of distinguishing itself from the rest of the festival's True North “stream,” this year's offered the opportunity to cement its relevancy and expand its vision. That's something for which the admirably varied program proved more or less able, albeit with higher highs and lower lows than in 2016, which speaks, at least, to chances being taken (something that can't necessarily be said of the festival's programming in general). Taken on the whole, there are—beyond the uniting sensibility of critic and programmer Adam Cook—filmmaking trends that one could identify, and patterns that one could connect, for better and for worse, to the larger contemporary arthouse scene. But the most successful selections,...

The actress is mostly remembered for her good looks, but what about her impressive performances?
In Richard Dyer’s book Heavenly Bodies: Film Stars and Society, he writes that Marilyn Monroe was “the most visible star”: an actress whose life was put on display, and remains so over 50 years after her death. She is one of the most iconic Hollywood stars of all time, her face instantly recognizable to even those who have never seen any of her movies. She is a symbol of beauty, glamor, cinema, femininity, blondness, sexuality, and tragedy. While the world speculates about her personal life — who was she romantically involved with? How did she die? What was she really like? — her career as an actress is overshadowed by her fame.

River of No Return: Sobel Brings Scent of Southern Gothic to the Mid-West with Stellar Debut
Family reunions have tremendous potential as battlefields for dysfunctional reparations, and provide easy arenas for comedy or drama to flourish. Director Matt Sobel draws upon the decidedly uncomfortable sort with his debut, Take Me to the River, an astute collision of adolescent anguish, coming-out suppression, and rural redneck nightmare all rolled into a flammable powder keg that leaks incendiary fumes but never builds to explosive relief. Age old juxtapositions, such as the sinful worldliness of Californians vs. corn-fed Midwestern white values, are enhanced by the dramatic charge of queer tensions Sobel compellingly conjures. Sure to make you squirm thanks to a reservoir of debauched sexuality lurking underneath the thin veneer of respectable propriety, Sobel culls a handful of startlingly realistic performances from a fine cast.

Lifetime's mini-series "The Secret Life of Marilyn Monroe" debuts on May 30, prompting the question: What possible secrets can there still be about Marilyn Monroe?
Quite a few, apparently, from the identity of her birth father, to the nature of her fatal overdose at age 36 -- was it suicide, accident, or murder? In 2012, on the 50th anniversary of her death, Moviefone previously published "25 Things You Didn't Know About Marilyn Monroe." Turns out that list barely scratched the surface. Here, then, are 25 more.
1. Monroe's birth certificate from 1926 lists her birth name as Norma Jeane Mortenson. The last name was a misspelling of the surname of her mother's second husband, Martin Mortensen, who separated from Gladys before she became pregnant. Soon after, she reverted to her first married name, Baker, and gave that name to her daughter.
2. Gladys later told Norma Jeane that her father was Gladys' boss, Charles Gifford, who looked like...

Skidoo
Written by Doran William Cannon
Directed by Otto Preminger
USA, 1968
Of the nearly 70 films I’ve written about in this column, I would whole-heartedly recommend each without reservation, to not only watch, but to spend good money on. With 1968′s Skidoo, out now on a new Olive Films Blu-ray, I’m breaking that tradition. I wouldn’t suggest anyone purchase this film, though everyone should see it. This is a most unusual, absolutely indefinable, wholly unique motion picture.
I initially viewed Skidoo on the sole basis of its starring Alexandra Hay, who I’ve been smitten with since first seeing her in Jacques Demy’s Model Shop, released the following year. On this point, Skidoo succeeds. Hay is a delightful beauty, charming in a way that is very much of the era. Admittedly unfamiliar with her biography, I can’t imagine why she didn’t have more of a career.

Out of the Past
Directed by Jacques Tourneur
Written by Daniel Mainwaring
USA, 1947
Director Jacques Tourneur knew how to make the most out of a little, particularly when he was working in collaboration with producer Val Lewton (see Cat People, 1942, I Walked with a Zombie, 1943, and The Leopard Man, 1943). So when Rko gave this master of the low-budget picture a comparatively larger budget and a top-notch screenplay (by Daniel Mainwaring—as Geoffrey Homes—based on his own novel, “Build My Gallows High”) the result was one of the finest of all film noir.
Starring Robert Mitchum as Jeff and Jane Greer as Kathie, Out of the Past is built on a premise that is one of the defining characteristics of noir: the inevitability of an inescapable past. Such a device was often integral, with the repercussions of one’s recent deeds coming back to haunt them, but relatively rare was...

San Diego County Sheriff's officials say James Lee Dimaggio, suspected of abducting 16-year-old Hannah Anderson, has been killed in Idaho and the teen has been found safe. San Diego Sheriff William D. Gore said Hannah's father was "elated" his daughter was found alive. FBI agents shot and killed Dimaggio, reports CNN. "It was the worst-case scenario, but at the same time, we're very grateful Hannah is alive," Cathy Griffin, a Dimaggio family spokeswoman, told People on Saturday night. From the silent movie era into the early 1930s, the standard aspect ratio of Hollywood films was 1.33:1, a ratio developed by cinema pioneer Thomas Edison. Early in the “talkie” era, when the soundtrack was added to the side of the film frame, the width of the image was reduced even more, creating a more square-shaped picture. Since the early 1950s, most movies have been filmed in a process where the width of the visual frame is between 1.85 to 2.4 times greater than the height. This means that for every inch of visual height, the frame as projected on the screen is between 1.85 to 2.4 times as wide. This results in a panoramic view that can add a greater breadth and perception of the environment and mood of a movie. The rise in popularity of television is credited with inciting the motion picture’s move to the widescreen systems that flourished throughout the 50s,...

On 10th November, Julien’s presided over the sale of 800+ lots for their ‘Hollywood Icons and Idols’ auction, featuring movie costumes, props and assorted memorabilia.
The auction’s big draw was a (not ‘the’; there were several) blue and white cotton gingham pinafore dress and original blouse worn by Judy Garland as Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz. It exceeded lowest expectations selling for $480,000, perhaps not as much as hoped for bearing in mind it is such a well loved costume – top estimate was $600,000. Much of the bidding went this way, certainly high and above estimates, but nowhere near the record amounts seen at the Debbie Reynolds auction last year. This could be because overall the lots were not as obviously exciting, or economic reasons, or even simply that the sale was not particularly well publicised.
Any item seen on Marilyn Monroe will make money, but over half a million...

Judy Garland's blue gingham dress from The Wizard of Oz just made a fortune at a Beverly Hills auction, netting $480,000. A couple of other items sold well too: a Steve McQueen jacket went for $50,000, Marilyn Monroe's purple skirt from River of No Return sold for the same, and a decadent Jayne Mansfield cat-print jumpsuit sold for $16,250. Fancy! Except I want none of these things in my home and can't believe anyone else would either.
I don't know about you, but here are some actual movie props I'd spring for.
1. The candlestick (or rope?) from Clue
It's not a blunt instrument until Lesley Ann Warren has wielded it. Why isn't that thing on my mantle beneath my graffiti mural of Eileen Brennan?
2. This insane neckerchief from The Boys in the Band

Blue and white gigham dress Garland wore as Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz sold to anonymous buyer at Beverly Hills auction
Judy Garland's blue and white gingham dress from The Wizard of Oz sold for $480,000 (£301,944) at a Beverly Hills auction on Saturday.
Julien's Auctions said the price for the pinafore dress and white puffy-sleeved blouse that Garland wore throughout the 1939 film classic was in line with estimates.
But it was well below the sky-high figures paid last year for Hollywood costumes worn by Marilyn Monroe and Audrey Hepburn, and a similar dress worn during tests for The Wizard of Oz that fetched $910,000 (£572,435) in 2011.
Auctioneer Darren Julien said the price difference was due to the fact that only a few test dresses were made for The Wizard of Oz, while there are about seven versions of Garland's signature gingham pinafore.

The iconic blue gingham dress Judy Garland wore in "The Wizard of Oz" has a new owner, who's about half a million dollars poorer in the transaction.
The dress was the big-ticket item in a weekend auction of Hollywood memorabilia by Julien's Auctions in Beverly Hills. The buyer, whose identity wasn't disclosed, paid $480,000 for it. That's more than twice median home price in the United States.
Why such a fuss over the frock? The auction house says it's the only combination of Dorothy's dress and blouse from "The Wizard of Oz" that's still in existence.
Other items in the auction included clothing once owned by Marilyn Monroe -- a skirt she wore while filming "River of No Return" in the early 1950s was sold for $50,000; a dress worn by Julie Andrews in "The Sound of Music" ($38,400); and a jacket Steve McQueen wore in a 1970 race ($50,000).

Chicago – They don’t make ‘em like Robert Mitchum any more. Every few years, there’s a DVD collection of classic movies that rises above the others for the holiday season. One of this year’s most star-packed entries includes not only Mitchum but John Wayne, Deborah Kerr, Kirk Douglas, Shirley MacLaine, Richard Widmark, Gene Kelly, Paul Newman, Shelley Winters, Marilyn Monroe, and many more. Mitchum may be the face on the cover but the set is a trip through the golden era of Hollywood through more than just one star.

Marilyn Monroe, who died 50 years ago, created a wholly other version of herself, meant not to convince but to seduce. John Banville, who fell in love with her when he was 10, considers a new biography of this enduringly compelling icon
I first fell in love with her in River of No Return, in which she starred with Robert Mitchum and Rory Calhoun. The movie was released in 1954, and probably did not get to Ireland until the following year, so I was 10 when I saw it, at the Capitol Cinema in Wexford. The Capitol was a rather gaunt, barn-like picture palace, with a wooden floor and seats covered with balding plush that gave off a curiously doggy smell. But the glory of the place, at least in my memory of it, was the great scarlet curtain, fluted and fringed, that would open with a deeply suggestive swish as the house lights...

To mark the 50th anniversary of Marilyn Monroe's death, TCM rolls out a full 24-hour marathon of Monroe films on August 4 as part of the month long "Summer Under the Stars" festival. The lineup reflects Monroe's versatility and depth as an actress, including her trademark naughty-nice comedic turns ("Some Like It Hot," "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes") and more anguished roles that communicated her underlying sadness ("River of No Return," "Niagara"). The programming kicks off with John Huston's brilliant heist tragedy "The Asphalt Jungle." Monroe plays Louis Calhern's kept mistress, periodically bobbing up from a couch to purr "Uncle Lon!" and then returning to her catnap. Though small, her part in Huston's film looks ahead to a type of role she would revisit throughout her career -- the ditzy, unassuming golddigger. She perfected this could-be thankless stereotype in Howard Hawks'...

Given her enduring appeal fifty years after her death, it can easily be argued that Marilyn Monroe was the signature pop culture icon of the 20th Century and her allure is lasting well into the next century. Last year, I read Max Allan Collins’ take on Marilyn’s death before watching Michelle Williams portray her in My Week with Marilyn. Her career has become the spine for the NBC series Smash. Her image is found in commercials, artwork, music videos, calendars, and on and on. While her appeal and persona don’t grab me, I respect her impact on America and the world.

Chicago – There is arguably no one in the history of Hollywood more iconic than Marilyn Monroe. Not only was she a massive star in her day but her tragic death turned her into a beauty that was frozen in time. She transcends movies and it’s possible that she’s never been more popular than she is in the ’10s with releases like “My Week with Marilyn,” “Smash,” and the new 7-disc Blu-ray box set, “Forever Marilyn,” a must-own for fans of Norma Jeane Masterson.

The Forever Marilyn Blu-ray set captures the beauty and natural talent of screen icon Marilyn Monroe, but the barebones housing of the discs and lack of bonus material makes the high-dollar suggested retail price a bit extreme. All seven titles are some of Monroe.s best work and look incredible on the Blu-ray format. The Forever Marilyn set features The Misfits, Some Like It Hot, How to Marry A Millionaire, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, Seven Year Itch, There.s No Business Like Show Business, and River of No Return. All seven of the films are also individually available on Blu-ray. Without a doubt, the Blu-ray presentation of these films is the best they have ever looked, and each film...

This week, there's not much in the way of new movies to mention being released to home video (unless you're into Josh Hutcherson or Dane Cook--and if so I'm sorry--in which case there's the bizarre horror comedy Detention). So, we give you this lovely new box set of seven Marilyn Monroe classics on Blu-ray, released today on the 50th anniversary of the star's passing, which includes: - The Seven Year Itch - Gentlemen Prefer Blondes - How to Marry a Millionaire - River of No Return - There's No Business Like Show Business - Some Like It Hot (previously released on Bd) - The Misfits (previously released on Bd) The transfers are superb, the blacks very black and the colors brilliant, and the DTS-hd Master Audio 5.1 tracks sound terrific...
