The high school prom is fast approaching. While Dori Graham is going to the prom with her boyfriend Tommy Rogers who she loves, her best friend Arabella laments having no boyfriend and thus no date on the horizon for the prom. The excitement of the prom increases when Tommy, having won a talent contest to appear on
Alan Freed's rock 'n' roll television show, is able to convince Freed to bring the entire show to the prom. While Arabella eventually pines for a boy named Melville, she hoping to make an impression so that he'll ask her to the prom, what looked to be Dori's straightforward path to a happy prom is potentially at risk when Gloria Barker moves to town, she having her own sights on Tommy. As Dori learns that Gloria has purchased a strapless evening gown to wear to the prom, Dori too has to have one, she seeing a $30 gown she wants in Miss Silky's boutique. To instill a sense of monetary responsibility in Dori, Mr. Graham has closed all of her store accounts, including at Miss Silky's boutique, but makes a deal with Dori to donate $15 toward the gown if she can come up with the other $15. Penniless Dori comes up with a business idea to raise that $15, but her confused sense of math and of business practices threatens her friendship with Arabella, her ability to get the gown, and her prom date with Tommy to the grips of Gloria.
