Sex & Nudity

  • The film contains some mild sensuality and innuendo.
  • Two people are seen getting dressed, it is implied that they had sex. Nothing graphic in the slightest.
  • A man watches a woman undress. Nothing is shown except for her in a bra
  • There is no explicit nudity in this movie, whereas there are a few mild ones. We see a woman in bra for an extended period of time, and we also see a lot of kisses in the movie. The shower scene avoids nudity, its blurred and nothing explicit is shown, although you see the overall shape of the persons body easily.

Violence & Gore

  • In one scene we see a woman in a shower turning to see a shadowy figure with a knife. She screams as the movie's dramatic theme is played, with the shadowy figure closing in with the knife still in hand. There are sound effects of the knife entering flesh. Afterward you can see the woman possibly dead in the shower, with a lot of blood going down the shower drain.

Profanity

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • Besides a scene in which a man smokes, the drug and alcohol content of this movie is nonexistent. There is however an early scene in which drinking/alcoholism are subtly joked about between two men.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • Bernard Herrmann's score can be scary and suspenseful. The stabbing violins in the iconic shower scene are startling and intense.
  • This film contains substantial suspense that at times transcends the plot. Although the story is engrossing, a good portion of the atmosphere arises from scenery and music, which alone may frighten younger viewers. This does not take into consideration the film's depictions of violence, that aren't graphic. The most blatant instance of violence occurs relatively early on and serves to heighten the suspense of the rest of the film.
  • Many scenes in the movie are frightening.

Spoilers

The Parents Guide items below may give away important plot points.

Violence & Gore

  • Body count:3.
  • The most graphic scene in the movie (because of the violence) is the classic shower scene. A woman is stabbed with a knife and falls to the floor, though this scene isn't particularly graphic it is slightly disturbing.
  • While a man is going up the stairs he is slashed with a knife across his face before falling down a long staircase and dying.
  • During the film's climax, there is a brief struggle between two men in which one bashes the other over the head with a vase in order to flee.
  • Finally, near the end of the film, a gruesome discovery is made: the dried and embalmed corpse of a man's mother is found in the cellar of a house. We see it first from behind, sitting in a chair, resembling the figure of a person, until a woman turns it around to reveal its decayed, skull-like face. It is a brief yet shocking sequence.
  • It is also revealed that a man killed his mother and her lover as a boy by poisoning them both, done in a non-graphic way.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • After Norman's mother side of himself kills Marion, his split personality switches back to himself and he is heard yelling "Oh God!" and "Mother!" The way he says it and the fact that he was the one who killed Marion could make this disturbing and frightening for some viewers.
  • At the very end of the flick Norman is locked in a room, with a fly on his hand, you can hear the moms voice speaking say "She wouldn't even harm a fly..." While Norman gives a creepy smile and the scene fades to a close, you can see the rotten skull of Mrs. Bates very faintly.
  • There is a jump scare scene.
