Hammer Horror is at its best when retelling the great literary classics. Hammer made two whole series' out of the great Dracula and Frankenstein stories; each film taking ideas from the stories and fusing them with original ones. Robert Louis Stevenson's classic Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde was most famously adapted by Hammer in 1971 with the fantastic Dr Jekyll and Sister Hyde; but they did that story in a more orthodox way over ten years earlier in 1960; and The Two Faces of Dr Jekyll is the result. It has to be said that this is nowhere near as great as the later effort; but it's still a good version of the classic story. Of course, the plot focuses on Dr Jekyll; a reclusive scientist experimenting with separating the two different sides of a person's personality. He tries the resulting potion on himself; and unleashes the murderous side of his personality, in the form of Mr Hyde. Meanwhile, Jekyll's wife is engaging in an adulterous affair with his best friend.

The reason this film works so well is down to the way that the characters are set up. The film lays its foundations before going into the story surrounding Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde; and this pays dividends as the main bulk of the film then fits into what has already been set out, rather than the story seeming like a mere distraction to the main point of the film. The lead role is taken by Paul Massie, whose very deep voice instils a certain authority in the character. He also lends himself well to playing the two sides of the title character. There's a role for Hammer favourite Christopher Lee; whom some will believe should have taken the lead role, but does fit into his co-starring role very well. The film does not feature Hammer's trademark bright colour scheme; although that could be down to the poor quality copy I saw; the film could really use a re-release! Anyway, the film all boils down to a well worked conclusion and overall I have to say that this little known Hammer is well worth a look!
