The movie was shot with a special film which didn't require much light on set, as Totò already had serious health issues to his eyes which would eventually lead him to near-blindness.
Both director Sergio Corbucci and actor Vittorio De Sica used to work at this movie on afternoons, because in the morning they where busy with other works: Corbucci with Duel of the Titans (1961), De Sica with Boccaccio '70 (1962).

Originally the plot had to be about the rivalty between a public security marshall and a Carabinieri marshall working to the same case. The censorship made the plot being totally changed.
