This was the second of Roger Corman's "Poe" films. He had intended to do "The Masque of the Red Death" but felt that it was too close to the content of Ingmar Bergman's recent Det sjunde inseglet (1957) (US title: "The Seventh Seal"). Several years later Corman would go to England to make The Masque of the Red Death (1964).

Errores:

Continuidad: The name plate on Elizabeth Medinas tomb goes from looking almost brand new to worn and rusty and back in several different shots.

Roger Corman Delivers Another Gem Based On Poe's Work

Roger Corman's follow-up to his memorable "The Fall of the House of Usher" is even better than the previous film in the director's series of Poe adaptations. Once again, Corman proves that he is very apt at making a very low-budget movie look like a multi-million dollar production. He cut corners by reusing old sets and costumes, but I don't think Corman's penny-saving ways affect the quality of the production. This film, more than any other, helped establish Corman as a filmmaker with a clear and energetic vision. As the series progressed, Corman experimented with the formula, but I think the first two Poe movies are near perfect. The main theme of the film is that individual actions do have a lasting impact on the future. Vincent Price goes deliciously over the top in one of his most memorable performances. With all due respect to Lugosi, Karloff, Lee and Cushing, I think Price is the genre's most accomplished performer. John Kerr is quite good (I do think Mark Damon was a better hero), and the great Scream Queen Barbara Steele has a small, but unforgettable role. Richard Matheson's script has panache, and Floyd Crosby's color cinematography is top notch.
