Quiet movie that nevertheless draws one in

I did not expect great things from the film when it began, although the opening sequence was arresting as it exemplified the lyricism that Bertolucci said (in an interview included with the CD) that he was striving for. Events unfold in an unhurried manner and consist of quite ordinary people doing ordinary things. British films of the sixties also had begun to depict the lives of the ordinary in what were called "slice-of-life" films. The story revolves around the murder of a prostitute and the interrogation of the persons who were in the area, a large wooded park, during the woman"s last hours on earth. Bertolucci related how he wanted to show the passage of time and hence the film is subdued as it quietly follows the movements and the actions of those persons. Some things are only hinted at such as the relationship of two boys and an adult, and the fate of one of the boys who attempts to swim across the Tiber when the boys panic because of the arrival of the police. What I found unusual in the film, was the way in which all the characters were held at arms length. There was no attempt to build sympathy for the murdered women or anyone else in the film. None of them were particularly attractive and I didn't really care what happened to any of them. The film was more of a riddle than the thriller Bertilucci described it. But it holds ones interest by the rhythm of it's pacing and the mood of foreboding it generates.
