The picture talks about a Greek young of Anatoly (Turkey) called Stavros(Stathis Giallelis). He is sent by his father to Constantinopla for helping the family.Howewer he only thinks on America.During the journey he'll suffer pretty misfortunes,risks and odds relating himself with friends(Frank Wolff,John Marley,Lou Antonio) and enemies .He'll work in laborious employments to obtain a passage in a splendid ship for the promised land.

The movie is an adaptation of an autobiographic novel of the Greek-Turkish Director Elia Kazan who being a child emigrates along with family to United States.Since the initiating he describes memories,emotions and infancy images ,besides narrates the persecution to Greeks and Armenians by Turkish that finished in genocide.Kazan reflects the rural sets of realism way,folkloric custom,the landscapes and characters personages and interiors homes equally.Kazan obtained a deep emotion and sensibility by means of a slow moving scenes and close-up protagonists with dialogs dealing about essential feeling as the family love,the friendship or happiness.These images contrast with the breathtaking outdoors of the mountains and countryside where are developed the events.Magnificent cinematography in black and white is by Haskel Wexler.Awesome music score with oriental style is by Manos Hadjidakis(Topkapi).The motion picture is very well directed by Elia Kazan . The release will achieved Oscar Academy Award to the production design and attained three nominations referred to Director and original screenplay, plus obtained for Golden Globe Director and the biggest film in San Sebastial Festival. Rating :Above average and astounding
