On the JoBlo Movies YouTube channel, we will be posting one full movie every day of the week, giving viewers the chance to watch them entirely free of charge. The Free Movie of the Day we have for you today is the Vietnam War drama The Veteran, and you can watch it over on the YouTube channel linked above, or you can just watch it in the embed at the top of this article.
Directed by Sidney J. Furie from a screenplay by J. Stephen Maunder and John Flock, The Veteran was originally released in 2006 and is a follow-up to Furie’s 2001 film Under Heavy Fire, a.k.a. Going Back. This one has the following synopsis: Thirty years on from the Vietnam War, a government official is trying to track down soldiers who went missing in action, in the hope that it may lead her to her father. Meanwhile,...

According to the story he himself tells in the documentary series Hollywood, UK, Canadian filmmaker Sidney J. Furie came to England to take part in the British new wave, whose films he admired. First, he had to pay his dues with nonsense like Dr. Blood's Coffin, The Snake Woman and The Young Ones (starring pop singer Cliff Richard), but eventually, with The Leather Boys in 1964, he was able to make the kind of dynamic working-class social realism he'd been admiring from afar (Rita Tushingham's presence in the cast provides the stamp of authenticity). But During One Night (1961) shows Furie working on a small-scale independent film that has more in common with his mid-sixties work than it does with the cheesy exploitation movies he marked time on, and its date shows how quick off the mark Furie must have been: Look Back in Anger only hit cinemas in 1959, and by '61 Furie was in Britain,...

Some of the international movie posters presented in Cinema Retro issue #28, which features in-depth coverage of the making of Zulu.
By Brian Hannan
The 50th anniversary showing of Zulu in Britain next month is unlikely to be repeated in the U.S. where the film flopped. But even the poorest box-office performer has an afterlife. So in 1965 Zulu was pushed out again anywhere that would have it. That meant it supported some odd, not to say ugly, bedfellows – exploitationer Taboos of the World in Kansas City, The Three Stooges in The Outlaws Is Coming in Phoenix, B western Stage To Thunder Rock in Long Beach, How to Stuff a Wild Bikini in Des Moines and Rhino in Abilene. They liked it in Long Beach where it supported both Circus World and That Man from Rio. It was the second feature to None But the Brave in Provo, Utah, and to two more successful Joe E.

Youth Culture History, Margate
The Turner Contemporary has already put Margate on the art map since it opened in its new home on the Kent coast in April, and now this spin-off from their current youth culture exhibition livens up the local film scene with two vintage double bills. First up is a skinhead pairing of This Is England and Mike Leigh's Meantime – the latter with a young Gary Oldman on fine, loutish form. Then on Sunday, the clock winds further back to the 1960s biker gangs of The Leather Boys and Liverpudlian thriller Violent Playground, both quality dramas and faithful records of the postwar teen scene.

This grassroots human rights documentary festival is Scotland's largest, and in no danger of running out of subject matter. This year's theme is A Year Of Protest and there are hundreds of long and short...

Dustbin Film Festival, Chipping Sodbury
As the awards seasons winds towards its climax, why not forget about all those prestige movies and red-carpet fashion trends and come to where the real action is? This resolutely glamour-free event, now in its 11th year, screens only salvaged 16mm footage of machinery in action – from out-of-date promotional reels for vintage agricultural equipment to archive footage of trams being scrapped, cranes being tested or the first flight of Concorde – "anything with a fuel tank", they say. Best of all is the programming process: there isn't one. You just fish a random reel out of the big dustbin (hence the festival's name) and they stick it on.
