Prior to 1964 -- the year "Gilligan's Island" debuted, comedian and actor Jerry Van Dyke already had an expanding showbiz career. In 1963 alone, he appeared in the films "The Courtship of Eddie's Father," "Palm Springs Weekend," and "McClintock!" He also had a few guest appearances on his brother's sitcom "The Dick Van Dyke Show," and regularly turned up on talk shows to perform and converse.
It was in 1964 that Van Dyke was offered the title role in Sherwood Schwartz's "Gilligan's Island," still in development at the time. Van Dyke couldn't have predicted that "Gilligan's Island" would last for 98 episodes and become one of the most widely recognized sitcoms in TV history, so turning it down didn't seem like much of an event. As the public now knows, the title role in "Gilligan's Island" went to comedian Bob Denver, star of "The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis."

The 2020 Oscars In Memoriam segment memorialized late Hollywood icons such as Kobe Bryant, who died in a helicopter crash on Jan. 26, and Kirk Douglas, who died last week at age 103. But the Academy left off a few notable names, including Luke Perry, Cameron Boyce and Sid Haig.
Orson Bean, the 91-year-old “Being John Malkovich” actor who died in a car accident Friday, was also omitted. That’s likely because the Academy didn’t have time to modify the segment before Sunday’s telecast. Likewise, Robert Conrad, who appeared in films including “Palm Springs Weekend” and “Jingle All the Way,” died on Saturday at 84.
The organization behind the Oscars has faced blowback before for failing to include major filmmakers in the In Memoriam reel. But viewers were particularly surprised by Perry’s exclusion, since his final on-screen appearance was in “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” one of this year’s best picture nominees.

(Robert Conrad (R) with Ross Martin in "The Wild, Wild West".
By Lee Pfeiffer
Actor Robert Conrad has died at age 84. Conrad's got his first big break with a key role in the 1950s hit TV series "Hawaiian Eye". But it was in the 1960s that he soared to fame in "The Wild, Wild West", one of the more enduring TV series inspired by the James Bond phenomenon. Set in the late 1800s, Conrad and co-star Ross Martin played government agents James West and Artemus Gordon, who employed Victorian-age super gadgets to thwart nefarious megalomaniacs. The show's tongue-in-cheek approach to plots relied heavily on the comedic byplay between Conrad and Martin. The series lasted four seasons and the actors returned in TV movies based on the show many years later. In 1999, the series inspired the poorly-received big screen adaptation starring Will Smith and Kevin Kline. Conrad excelled at stunt work...

A new beginning, a resolution, an escape or falling back into the same old tricks.
Girlfriends' Guide to Divorce Season 3 Episode 4 had a little bit of everything, most of which was refreshing and exciting. Unfortunately, with the good comes the not-so-good, and we weren't spared that, either.
With Abby making new friends in Bakersfield and Jo, Delia and Phoebe playing fast and free in Palm Springs, there's a lot of ground to cover. Let's go!
Kudos to the team for that opening shot, because despite the title and the previews to the contrary, I got so caught up in the moment I really thought Abby had decided to drive to Palm Springs separately from the others and was on her way.
So what a fun surprise that Jo, Delia and Phoebe were without their "leader" for the weekend.
Odd that I consider Abby their ringleader, but as their mutual connection,...

Future Dallas star who began career as a model was paid $25 to act as body double for unavailable Bancroft
As stories go, this one has legs: 46 years after The Graduate was released, Dallas star Linda Gray has claimed the famous pin on the poster as her own, rather than either of those attached to the film's star, Anne Bancroft.
The poster for The Graduate, framed within a peephole, shows a woman rolling on a stocking under the watchful gaze of a barefoot Dustin Hoffman. All that can be seen of her is an arm, a leg and a hand. But the lady to whom these limbs were presumed to belong was apparently unavailable for poster-posing duties.
"I think she was absent that day," said Gray. "I got paid $25. For one leg, that was good."

I admit it. I am a Troy Donahue fan. There I said it. Not surprising since I love and have been writing about Sixties starlets for over ten years. If there ever was a male version of a starlet, it was Troy. I purchased the DVD box set Warner Bros. Romance Classics Collection featuring four of his early Sixties movies and recently viewed My Blood Runs Cold (1964) from Warner Bros Archive as a DVD-on-Demand. The pairing of Troy Donahue as a loon and Joey Heatherton as the blonde he desires in this suspense film didn’t burn up the silver screens across the country and left most critics cold, but the coupling of America’s favorite bland blonde boy with the Ann-Margret wannabe made for bad cinema you just got to love.

Just four months ago, when her divorce from Tao Ruspoli was being finalized, Olivia Wilde described herself as "wobbly." But now, it seems like the actress is starting to stand tall again. "When you go through a breakup, you lose faith for a while," Wilde, 27, tells Town & Country. "It makes you feel like such a failure, but I think this whole traumatic year has made me a better actor. And the good thing about getting divorced young - if there is a good thing - is that it makes you realize there's no schedule in life. It blasts you wide...

Talk about digging deep, Warner Brothers. The Romance Classics Collection digs up, what I’m classifying as, a bunch of B-Grade romance films aimed at teenagers of old. While I watched them there was a part of me that had to roll my eyes as many of the sentiments are quite dated. Poodle skirts and good ol’ fashioned soda fountains as iconic pieces of youth culture faded long ago – so where does one find modern value in material whose epochal values have vanished? Granted, love stories have and probably will be a staple of film forever – but it’s the ancillary elements of the story that make a given tale a truly entertaining experience. With that said, The Romance Classics Collection must be viewed with a grain of salt and can’t really be considered too seriously.

Former teen heartthrob actor Troy Donahue died Sunday at the age of 65. The blond, blue-eyed hunk wooed female film audiences during the 50s and 60s, after shooting to fame in the role of Sandra Dee's young lover in 1959's A Summer Place. He later encountered and overcame drug and alcohol problems. Donahue died at St. John's Hospital And Medical Center in Santa Monica, California, after suffering a heart attack on Thursday, according to family friend Bob Palmer. "He was a good-looking, blond guy who looked great on the beach," Palmer says. "He was a little more moody - he wasn't a gee-whiz guy. His character was more the brooding youth, but with heroic underpinnings." Donahue went on to star in a series of teen romances, including Parrish (1961), Rome Adventure (1962), and Palm Springs Weekend (1963).
