Raquel Welch, an iconic actress whose image adorned posters in bedrooms around the world partly because of her bikini-clad role in One Million Years BC, but enjoyed a career that was so much more than one acting job, has died. She was 82.
Jo Raquel Tejada was born in Chicago in 1940. The family moved to San Diego, where she took ballet and acting lessons, and as a teen she won beauty contests. Welch also did some professional modeling.
She made her screen debut as one of the call girls in Russel Rouse’s film A House Is Not a Home in 1964, and in the same year made an uncredited appearance in the Elvis Presley movie Roustabout.
One of her earliest and best known roles was in 1966 sci-fi adventure Fantastic Voyage, in which she played one of a team of scientists miniaturized and injected into another scientist's body to clear a blood clot.

We have some sad news to share today, as Hollywood has lost one of its most legendary icons: Raquel Welch has passed away at the age of 82. Deadline reports that Welch’s passing was confirmed by her reps at Media 4 Management, who simply said that she had died after a brief illness.
Welch was born Jo Raquel Tejada on September 5, 1940, in Chicago, Illinois, but her family moved to San Diego, California when little Raquel was just two years old. She knew as a youngster that she wanted to get into the entertainment industry, and studied ballet for several years while entertaining – and winning – beauty contests. She attended San Diego State College on a theater arts scholarship, but despite doing some stage acting and landing a job as a weather presenter on the local news, it took a while for her to break through into films. It’s a banner day for powerhouse vocalists: Kem, Ledisi, Toni Braxton, and Gregory Porter all released new albums at midnight. Of those four singers, Porter has enjoyed the least mainstream success, but he has the best ballad of the bunch with “Everything You Touch Is Gold,” which appears on All Rise, the singer’s sixth solo album.

Early on in “Ella Fitzgerald: Just One of Those Things,” singer Patti Austin tells the story of how Fitzgerald — traveling with a big band in the 1930s and apparently the only one on the bus with no interest in getting high — would sit in the back with her coat over her head to act as her “own personal filtration system.” That’s good for a laugh, and it’s also good for a sense of relief, in being reminded that this will be the rare film about a 20th century jazz giant that doesn’t have to worry about when to start in on the tragic foreshadowing. Living to a ripe old age, in this genre of documentary, is not just one of those things.
It’s suggested in director Leslie Woodhead’s film that Fitzgerald lived a fairly lonely life when she was off the road — but it’s...

On Monday’s episode of “The Voice,” the Top 8 artists coached by Kelly Clarkson, John Legend and Blake Shelton performed. The goal for each contestant was to stream the most songs on Apple Music/iTunes by Tuesday at 7 a.m Et/4 a.m. Pt so that they reaped the benefit of a five-times vote multiplier.
We can report that Maelyn Jarmon from Team John Legend registered enough sales to have earned this bonus for the second week running for her performance of “Stay” by Rihanna. And her Top 13 ( “The Scientist”) and Top 24 (“Fallingwater”) songs are still in the top 100. Of Maelyn’s competition, six other artists made the top 100. (See the full list of songs and where they ranked below.)
Of these, only one cracked the Top 10 with Gyth Rigdon coming in at #9 for his rendition of the rousing “God Bless the USA” by Lee Greenwood. This Team Blake Shelton...

Hey, "The Voice" fans. Tonight, May 6, 2019, the top 13 contestants that were lucky enough to make it through from last week, did indeed perform tonight, Live. The four judges: Kelly Clarkson, John Legend, Adam Levine and Blake Shelton were, of course, on hand. The top 13 performed songs that were selected by you guys, the fans! Gyth Rigdon from Team Blake Shelton started off the performances. Gyth sang, "Nobody But Me." Blake got on his feet for this one. Afterwards, John told Gyth, "You were great up there. You carry yourself with star presence." Blake said, "I agree with John. You belong here. You own the stage, and you are an undiscovered talent." Next up, Kim Cherry from Team Blake Shelton hit the stage to perform, "Whatta Man." Afterwards, Kelly told Kim, "You did exactly what I expected, but I would like to hear you sing something. Your attitude and rap separates you,...

Say what you will about Season 16 of The Voice — and we have! — it’s wound up with a pretty good Top 13. So good, in fact, that when I went to take TVLine’s poll following last week’s bloodbath, I couldn’t pick an eliminated contestant that I would’ve been super mega eager to save. Maybe Team Kelly Clarkson’s Rebecca Howell, but even then, I’d have sooner saved Mikaela Astel, whom Kelly dumped during the Battles in favor of The Bundys.

Monday’s two-hour episode of “The Voice” will showcase the Top 13 singing for America’s votes. As with the Top 24 last week, this round does not see the coaches coming into the show with evenly matched teams. Blake Shelton still has six artists in the competition. The other veteran coach, Adam Levine, has only two as does reigning two-time champ Kelly Clarkson. Rookie coach John Legend counts three artists on his team.
We’ve done some digging on iTunes and have discovered spoilers of the songs that the Top 13 will perform live on May 6. Take a look below at the titles of these tunes as well as the names of the artists that made them famous. Then cast your vote for the contestant that you think will win the season 16 competition. And be sure to sound off on your most (and least) favorite coach and artist in the comments section.

Hive Mind, the group’s 4th LP, is its most polished, full of tranquil, yearning Quiet Storm and light-footed, live-band funk. The album plays as an extended conversation between Syd’s vocals – hyper-annunciated but gooey around the edges, massed and draped like a rumpled pile of sheets – and her rhythm section, especially the basslines of Patrick Paige II, which burrow, strut and stagger all within the space of a few bars. If the drums on Hive Mind were mixed slightly lower than is typical in modern recordings, many of the...

Since his days as a 2003 “American Idol” contestant – and subsequent victor – Ruben Studdard has received one request: cover the music of singer-composer Luther Vandross. Studdard even heard as much from his mother Emily after his “Idol” win. The resemblance of two big men with dynamic tenor voices and winding interpolative skills is certainly striking. Studdard all but sealed his fate in regard to the late Luther when a licensing snafu caused the then-contestant to cover “Superstar,” the 1969 Bonnie Bramlett and Leon Russell tune for which Vandross lent his grand interpretative skills in 1983.
From the stage of the Keswick Theatre in the Philadelphia suburb of Glenside, Penn. on Saturday, Studdard confessed to all-of-the-above while elegantly channeling Vandross for his “Ruben Sings Luther” showcase. Based on the recently-released Seg Music album of the same name, the “Velvet Teddy Bear” appropriated much of the late tenor’s nuances without mimicking too much of Vandross’ athleticism.

‘The X Factor’ continued on tonight with more of the “Four Chair Challenge” — and the competition is really heating up as more contestants are being given the boot! Did you agree with the judge’s choices? Let us know!
The “Four Chair Challenge” is very similar to musical chairs — except way more excruciating and emotional. It pained us every time someone got kicked out of their seat, but there are now officially four gals going to the live shows in Demi Lovato‘s Girls group! Do you agree with the choices, HollywoodLifers?
Who Advanced On The ‘X Factor?’
The competition was stiff in the Girls group, consisting of ladies who can mostly belt it out!
Khaya Cohen, 15, sang “Locked Out Of Heaven,” — and seriously, what is it with contestants slowing down songs lately? Unless it’s a perfect arrangement with the right tone, it’s a risky bet — but she made it!

We've narrowed it down to the Top 40 on "The X Factor." Now they will each perform for the judges in the four-chair challenge, which is where the mentors will systematically narrow their 10 acts down to four.
The way it works is each mentor has four chairs to fill and they fill them as they go along, but once they are full, in order to add another act, they must eliminate one. It's not like this is anything new on a singing competition show (narrowing from a few dozen to a pseudo-Top 10) but this format should prove quite dramatic.
To recap the categories, Kelly Rowland has over 25s, Paulina Rubio has boys, Demi Lovato has girls and Simon Cowell has groups.

Hal David, who partnered with Burt Bacharach to write some of the best-known songs in pop music, has died.

David and Bacharach met at the famed Brill Building in New York in the late 1950s and collaborated on a number of enduring pop standards, with Bacharach composing the music and David writing the lyrics. The duo had a long relationship with singer Dionne Warwick, writing hits such as "Walk on By," "Do You Know the Way to San Jose," "A House Is Not a Home" and "I Say a Little Prayer" for her.

The end of American Idol Season 11 is nigh, which means it’s time for the Idoloonie Nation to reflect on the always accessible “Top 25 Performances of All-Time” lists in their brains, then ask the question: “Who gets added from the latest crop of singers, and who gets cut?”
I limited my countdown to competitive performances on live shows — meaning semifinals, finals, and wild cards count; exit performances, auditions, and Hollywood Week do not — and still ended up with two or three dozen amazing moments left on the outside looking in. Washington — President Barack Obama is honoring the brainpower behind the unforgettable tunes "Raindrops Keep Fallin' on My Head," "Close to You," and others recorded by artists spanning Dionne Warwick, the Carpenters, Alicia Keys and the cast of "Glee."
On Wednesday night, Obama will present the songwriting duo of Burt Bacharach and Hal David with the Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song. In the 1960s and beyond, their work produced some of the most popular music for movies, television and recording artists.
In return for all the memorable hits and love songs, the 83-year-old Bacharach said he would love to hear the president sing a few lines. The composer said he'll play piano for Obama any time if he wants to sing to the first lady.
"Nothing would make me happier because the guy can really sing," Bacharach told The Associated Press. "I heard him on YouTube sing `Walk On By,...

Jacob Lusk, the gospel voice of this season's American Idol (TV), made his exit last Thursday finishing in fifth place. The son of a music producer, Jacob impressed Idol judges with his performance of "God Bless The Child" during the Hollywood rounds of the competition. The 23 year-old singer from Compton, California was heavily praised by Randy Jackson in particular, who declared Jacob the best ever seen on Idol. Jacob sat down with reporters following his departure to answer questions about his experiences on the show. During this candid interview, Jacob talks about his reaction to Jimmy Iovine's criticism, the buzz surrounding his farewell performance, and what his first album will sound like. Here's what he had to say. Some people have said that your farewell performance was the best of the competition, your best of the competition, and that you seem more relaxed; you had nothing to lose. And...

Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. Fool me three times ... won't get fooled again. After weeks of plaid-based fashion crimes, self-righteous audience threats, horsey falsetto screeching and more awkward stage moves than an army of Paul McDonalds, Compton, California's Jacob Lusk was finally booted from "American Idol" on Thursday night.
I'm not saying I wanted him gone, but when America finally heard what I've been hearing for weeks (i.e., a singer whose commercial potential makes last year's "Idol" winner Lee DeWyze look like Lady Gaga), well, let's just say I felt vindicated, at the very least.
All but one of our experts correctly predicted Lusk's demise this week and "Idol" blogger Mj Santilli shared my feelings about the news. "I suspect if he had performed the way he really wanted to on 'Idol,' he would have been out weeks ago," she...

He might have gotten eliminated last night, but that doesn’t mean Jacob Lusk was ready to exit the stage. After being cut following ill-advised, off-key renditions of “No Air” and “Love Hurts,” the singer with powerful pipes performed his semifinals number, “A House Is Not a Home” — and continued singing the song straight into the credits. Check out his exit performance embedded below. Were you surprised to see him sent packing?

Thursday night’s installment of American Idol wasn’t so much a results show as it was a series of distinct promotional opportunities. Jennifer Lopez took a break from her grueling work behind the Idol judges’ table to hawk her two latest singles and herald the return of the saggy genie pant. Steven Tyler woke up from his long season’s nap to move a couple copies of his memoir. That horrible British guy who insulted Stefano Langone’s mother’s cooking tried to whip up some buzz for another one of his TV shows that I have no interest in watching.

The Idol block this week was decidedly Jenny’s. Wednesday night found the diva wearing the hottest heels in the universe, and in case you were wondering, she continued the streak last night in a pair of red-soled Louboutins. But truly, her pumps weren’t the story last night in the Idoldome: It was all about her sizzling performance of certified-hit “On the Floor,” as you can see in the photo here. But there was a secret to Jenny’s “Floor’-filled show: Even though the show masqueraded it as otherwise to you television viewers, J.Lo’s singing was totally pretaped.

American Idol held its Top 5 results show tonight, and that (of course) meant Ryan Seacrest split the contestants up into two separate duos, declared the fifth vocalist safe, then tried to convince that one lucky singer to choose which cluster of compatriots was at risk of elimination. Thankfully, Scotty McCreery took the “I’m not doing this with him todayyyyy” route and made Our Little Hostie do the dirty work. (Incidentally, Ryan took the opportunity to inform us that Scotty has never actually been in the bottom two; in other words, last week’s ambiguously doled-out results were a fakeout.

Jacob Lusk has become the ninth contestant to be eliminated from American Idol's tenth season. The singer was sent home tonight after falling into the bottom two alongside Lauren Alaina when it was revealed by host Ryan Seacrest that he had received the fewest number of votes following last night's performances. The results were revealed in random order this week, with contestants separating into two groups. Lusk chose to sing Luther Vandross's 'A House Is Not A Home' as his final song following his exit from the competition. The singers who are still in the running are Lauren Alaina, James Durbin, Haley Reinhart and Scotty McCreery. The Top (more)...

First the good news: More than 60 million votes came in on Wednesday night for the highest vote total so far this season on "American Idol." Of course, even with that avalanche of support, someone had to go home after the up-and-down "now and then"-themed performance episode.
As always at this stage of the competition, there was an unexpected twist, as gutsy high-schooler Lauren Alaina landed in the bottom for the first time all season. But when the tears were mopped up, it was gospel crooner Jacob Lusk who was sent to the showers, after a pair of performances that split the judges and drew low marks from mentor Jimmy Iovine.
"I got to share the love with America and I think America fell in love with me," Lusk said with a...

I’ve said since the third episode of Glee’s first season that the show’s weakest quality was the filler in between the songs. The writing is embarrassingly inconsistent in tone, the characters are prone to erratic shifts in emotion and motivation, and from one week to the next the show’s threads never really connected. The music though, the music was pretty damn good. The song choices, the mash-ups, and the new arrangements on old classics were and remain little nuggets of gold that the Glee fan has to dig out of each episode. Well stop sifting. Glee Encore singles out the big musical numbers and lets you play them back to back, shuffled, or on an individual basis. It's like the "Glee Jukebox" feature on later Glee season releases but it has them all on one disc, not separated across 3 or 4. From here on out, every season...

Ja from Mnpp here, continuing Tennessee Williams Centennial Week with a look at John Huston's 1963 film The Night of the Iguana. I chose Iguana because it's one of the few adaptations of Williams' work that I hadn't seen already, and because IMDb's summary made it sound torrid in the best Williams way. Defrocked priests and wanton teen girls and sapphic spinsters all flitting about a Mexican beach cut off from civilization? Yes please.
But truth be told, I found the film a little wanting, not wanton. Richard Burton's in full bluster, screaming and sloshing about as the drunken ex-man-of-the-cloth Shannon, Deborah Kerr barely registers as the sexless traveling painter he's too big a mess to end up with, and not a whole lot seems to gel.
I was fond of Grayson Hall as the lesbian intent upon Shannon's destruction (she was nominated for an Oscar, but lost to...

After all 24 semifinalists took the stage on Tuesday and Wednesday night, "American Idol" made use of Thursday night, March 3 to unravel the 13 finalists who will compete for the title on season 10.
