To quote Space Ghost himself, "I'll be dead long before you were born, and I'll be dead long before you'll be dead."
In 1994, producer Mike Lazzo donned a pith helmet, filled his arms with machetes, and trekked into the darkest corners of the bleak, terrifying Hanna-Barbera cartoon library. In the depths, he re-discovered a long-forgotten, one-season animated series from 1966 called "Space Ghost," a superhero show about a white-clad, cape-wearing starship captain who fought bud-like villains in the inky void of the cosmos. Space Ghost, voiced by Gary Owens, could pass through walls and oversaw a pair of sidekicks named Jan (Ginny Tyler) and Jace (Tim Matheson) as well as a chimp named Blip (Don Messick).
Like most of Hanna-Barbera's output, "Space Ghost" was strange and awful. 20 years later, reruns of shows like "Space Ghost" were increasingly enjoyed exclusively by college students under the influence of potent smokables. One would be...

The new Dynamite Entertainment title “Space Ghost” #1, not available until May 1, 1024, but already receiving over 40,000 advance orders through comic book retailers, is written by David Pepose and illustrated by Jonathan Lau, with covers by Francesco Mattina, Jae Lee, June Chung, Bjorn Barends and Michael Cho:
“…with the territories of the ‘Galactic Federation’ spread far and wide across the vastness of space, pirates and hijackers ransack the distant colonies with cruel disregard for the innocent scientists living among them.
‘Yet there is a cosmic vigilante who metes out justice throughout the galaxy, bringing vengeance to those prey upon the defenseless. Some say he is a policeman who has abandoned the strictures of the law. Others say he is a phantom, the sole survivor of a war-torn planet. And those who have survived his wrath claim he is more a force of nature, able to bend the very elements of ‘Creation’ to decimate his enemies.

The Western is a genre that's mostly gone by the wayside in recent decades, as portraits of straight-shooting American heroes and uncomplicated "bad guys" have become less digestible to the public. While popular neo-Westerns (like "Justified" or the works of Taylor Sheridan) and perspective-changing genre breakdowns have made a splash in recent yers, the genre has mostly died out. Of the relics that remain, few are as prolific and familiar as "Bonanza," a Western series that ran for an impressive 14 seasons on NBC in the '60s and '70s.
As a long-running TV series, "Bonanza" was able to chart the change — or stubborn lack thereof — within the genre and the country, frankly addressing topics like racism and bigotry while also delivering regular laughs and a dash of melodrama to loyal viewers. The series starred Lorne Green as widower Ben Cartwright and Dan Blocker, Pernell Roberts, and Michael Landon as Ben's three sons.

Created by Sean Akins and Jason DeMarco, Toonami is a late-night programming block that helped introduce Japanese animated series to audiences in the West. First launched in 1997 on Cartoon Network, the block continues to this day on Adult Swim and is responsible for expanding the animated palate of multiple generations, myself included. Originally, Toonami was hosted by Moltar, a former supervillain from the 1966 animated series "Space Ghost" (not to be confused with "Space Ghost Coast to Coast"), but was replaced three years later by Tom (short for Toonami Operations Module). Tom wasn't just a host; he also came with his own lore and storyline from episode to episode, similar to the way the robots on "Mystery Science Theater 3000" also have backstories and character arcs.

Animation fans (and fans of good movies regardless of style) have been thrust into an emotional tornado spinning as wildly as the Tasmanian Devil regarding the release of director Dave Green ("Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows") and writer Samy Burch's ("May December") live-action/animated hybrid Looney Tunes courtroom flick, "Coyote vs. Acme." What should be an absolute no-brainer hit at the box office is at risk of being scrapped for a tax write-off despite positive test screenings, the result of yet another frustrating corporate decision prioritizing capitalism over creativity, and an all-out attack on the art of filmmaking.
Of course, you realize, this means war.

On David X. Cohen and Matt Groening's 31st-century sci-fi sitcom "Futurama," the world's citizens are hooked on a high-octane ultra-soap-opera called "All My Circuits," a long-running TV series starring a cast of mostly robots. The main character in "All My Circuits" is a tall, egocentric blowhard named Calculon who is constantly discovering evil twins, engaging in robotic infidelities, and discovering multiple personalities. In a strange metanarrative twist, the Calculon on "All My Circuits" is played by a robot ... that also happens to be named Calculon, and also happens to be an egocentric blowhard.
In reality, Calculon is played by veteran voice actor Maurice Lamarche, one of the best voice actors currently working. Maurice Lamarche plays Calculon with a bloviating confidence that only seems to infect famous actors. Calculon eventually reveals that he is many hundreds of years old, and changes his identity every few decades. In previous lives, he...

Adult Swim has found the new voice of Squidbillies‘ Early Cuyler ahead of the show’s final season.
After a competitive search (watch the video below), Tracy Morgan landed the role of the balding hillbilly squid from Georgia over several Adult Swim favorites including George Lowe (the voice of Space Ghost), Spencer Grammer (Rick and Morty‘s Summer), Steve Blum (aka T.O.M. of Toonami) and Squidbillies co-creator Dave Willis.
Morgan replaces actor Stuart D. Baker who was fired from the long-running animated series in August 2020 over “extremely offensive and derogatory social media posts” disparaging entertainer Dolly Parton and Black Lives Matter.
Morgan can currently be seen starring as Tray Barker on TBS’ The Last O.G., now in its fourth season. Morgan also is an executive producer on the show. He’s probably best known for his role as Tracy Jordan in the sitcom 30 Rock (2006–2013), and for his...

Once again there will be plenty of strange and cool video clips, as well as prizes to be won when you watch my tuning in to our Twitch stream.
Watching is obviously great, but we really want you to get in on the action by participating in the group chat which, if last time was any indication, will be a hilariously goofy interactive experience.

Animation writer and executive Joe Ruby, who created cartoon series including “Scooby-Doo” along with his partner Ken Spears, died of natural causes Wednesday in Westlake Village, Calif. He was 87.
At Hanna-Barbera, Ruby and Spears created series including “Scooby-Doo, Where Are You?,” “Dynomutt” and “Jabberjaw.”
“He never stopped writing and creating, even as he aged,” said his grandson Benjamin Ruby.
“Scooby-Doo” launched on CBS in 1969 after going through a number of versions. It was launched as a gentler series partly in response to complaints about violence in cartoons such as “Space Ghost.” Together with character designer Iwao Takamoto, Ruby and Spears tried a number of titles and approaches, such as making the characters part of a rock band, before settling on the now-classic combo of Freddie, Velma, Daphne, Shaggy and a Great Dane named Scooby-Doo.
Ruby and Spears wrote the first five episodes, supervising and story editing the rest of the first season.

Strange Adventures has had the comics world hyped since its announcement. The new comic is from writer Tom King, with art from King’s long time collaborator Mitch Gerads and new art partner (and widely beloved superhero artist) Evan “Doc” Shaner, and the advance word on the book was more than enough to generate a ton of excitement. But does the first issue live up to the Eisner-bait hype?
The answer is a combination of “That’s not a fair question to ask,” and “oh my goodness yes.” Let’s start with yes.
In what is perhaps the least surprising statement of the year, the art is stupendous. Mitch Gerads and Doc Shaner each have their own strengths. Gerads excels at the mundane, making even a chat in a hotel room between a bored wife and a fried husband exciting. Shaner, by contrast, does the big, titanic superhero stuff perfectly.

Here's a look at the best and worst appearances of the Joker on Batman: The Animated Series.
It really is amazing how many things Batman: The Animated Series got right. Whether it was the fantastic writing, art design, or voice acting, it always got right to the soul of its characters. Mr. Freeze was in an issue of Grant Morrison’s Animal Man with the joke being that he was a forgotten relic lost to obscurity. Two years later, "Heart of Ice" defined him as such an interesting character that they went on to put him in a movie.
Not a good movie, but still! Arnold Schwarzenegger played him! That’s huge!
The Joker was already popular thanks to many factors, but Mark Hamill brought some extra life to the character and gave us what many would consider the ultimate take on the Clown Prince of Crime.

A film that’s every bit as lyrical and fraught as the T.S. Eliot poem it uses for a preface, Nietzchka Keene’s little-seen “The Juniper Tree” — shot in the summer of 1986, only to premiere at Sundance four years later after a series of financial woes — has long been thought of as the other Björk movie, the one she made before her feral, totemic, Falconetti-level performance in “Dancer in the Dark.” The one Björk made before she was even Björk.
Now, thanks to a stunning new 4K restoration made from the original 35mm camera negative, people will finally have a chance to appreciate this ethereal American gem as more than a footnote of its soon-to-be-iconic star’s career. Spellbinding as Björk’s screen presence was and has always been, “The Juniper Tree” deserves to be seen outside of her shadow.

This week’s question: Who is an underrated TV superhero that deserves more respect/attention? (Old and current shows are fair game.)
Allison Keene (@KeeneTV), Collider
This is tough because my outlet puts a premium on superheroes, so really none are overlooked as far as we’re concerned. However, I haven’t seen as much general love for “Black Lightning” as the show deserves. Maybe people are burned out by the deluge of Dctv, much of which is past its prime, though others are exceptionally innovative and increasingly great (“Legends of Tomorrow”). But “Black Lightning” provides something that we aren’t seeing elsewhere in superhero series. As we reported yesterday, Space Ghost Coast to Coast and Aqua Teen Hunger Force voice actor and animator C. Martin Croker passed away on Sunday at age 54. Now Adult Swim has decided to honor his memory in the best way they know how. The broadcaster announced on Twitter that they have posted virtually every episode of Space Ghost online and without the normal pay log in. This is an extra special treat considering DVDs for the series are out of print and hard to come by. To check them out, click on this link. Zorak and Moltar would have wanted it that way.

Adult Swim animator and voice actor Clay Martin Croker died yesterday at the age of 54, as reported by Adult Swim creative director Jason DeMarco and contributor/rapper Mc Chris. Croker is best known for voicing both Zorak and Moltar on the long-running Cartoon Network talk show parody “Space Ghost Coast to Coast,” a series credited for establishing Adult Swim, spawning four separate spin-off shows — “Aqua Teen Hunger Force,” “Sealab 2021,” “The Brak Show,” and “Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law” — and produced the majority of the writers and staff who still currently work for the alternative programming block.

The Space Ghost parody universe became a bit smaller this morning as C. Martin Croker, voice actor behind classic characters Zorak and Moltar on Space Ghost Coast to Coast, Dr. Weird on Aqua Teen Hunger Force, and an animator in his own right died this morning from undisclosed causes. He was 54. Born in Atlanta in 1962, Croker began working for the Turner Broadcasting System family of television networks in the early 1990s, animating several of TNT network’s “TNT Toons”…...

If you're a fan of Space Ghost, you're gonna love this new collectible action figure from Entertainment Earth. I've been a fan of this character for years and it's awesome to see him get a cool action figure like this.
Space Ghost is an intergalactic crime fighter from the Ghost Planet. He has various powers that include the ability to turn invisible (thanks to his belt), the power to fly, and shoot various rays from the powerbands on his wrists.
The action figure glows in the dark and comes with his sidekick, Blip the monkey. It also features interchangeable heads, hands, 32 points of articulation, and some of his weapon accessories like the Force Ray, Freeze Ray, Destroyer Ray, and Magna Ray.
The detailed costume design comes complete with a fabric cape with an integrated wire so you can pose it. This is seriously something that I'd love to get my hands on!

Space Ghost is getting his own Funko Pop this summer! There's no exact release date other than sometime this coming season, but I'm for sure picking this one up. I was never too big a fan of the original show, but I do love me some Space Ghost Coast To Coast! Ideally, if they did an exclusive one where Space Ghost was holding a coffee mug, I would prefer that more! Can we get a Brak, Zorak, and Moltar as well?...

So if you thought the news that DC was going to be revamping Hanna Barbera characters into comics was kind of boring, you aren't alone. I wasn't giving it a second thought until I saw this latest episode of DC All Access where we actually see what facelifts are coming to these classic characters.
Dan Didio gives a rundown of some of the new series, including Future Quest which will show Johnny Quest teaming up with Space Ghost, Birdman, Frankenstein Jr. etc. Jim Lee is reimagining Scooby Doo and the gang in the apocalypse. The weirdest of all (and probably most exciting) is a mashup of Mad Max and Wacky Racers called Wacky Race Land. How is that going to work out?! I can't wait to read it! Check out the full video below.

Hanna-Barbera has an impressive pedigree of cartoon character and stories that still influence many today. Turns out some of the top artists and writers over at DC Comics are huge Hanna-Barbera geeks. People like Dan Didio and Jim Lee, co-publishers of DC, were interviewed by EW about a new line of comics they have coming out that features some of the most iconic characters in cartoon history.
The upcoming comics include Flintstones, Future Quest, Wacky Raceland, and the "crown jewel" (as Lee is referring to it), Scooby Apocalypse. The cover art and name alone have me sold on the last one. Didio summarizes what we can expect from each of the comics:
“You’re gonna have an epic adventure in the future stories with Johnny [sic] Quest and Space Ghost. You’re going to have a scary, dangerous world in Wacky Raceland that is just as strange and dynamic as you hope it would be.

Pajamas and a big bowl of sugary cereal is how many of us remember watching our favorite Saturday morning cartoons as kids. Beginning in May, DC Entertainment plans to give old fans and new the chance to relive (and extend) their childhoods with a new, modern lineup of comics based on some of Hanna-Barbera’s most popular cartoon characters, but reimagined in a fresh and contemporary fashion.
The initial lineup includes:
Scooby Apocalypse – Featuring character designs by veteran artist Jim Lee and an origin story by Jim Lee and Keith Giffen (Justice League 3001), artist Howard Porter (Superman) will provide his own unique take on Freddie, Velma, Daphne, Shaggy and Scooby-Doo. “Those meddling kids” and their Mystery Machine are at the center of a well-meaning experiment gone wrong and they’ll need to bring all of their mystery solving skills to bear (along with plenty of Scooby Snacks), to find a...

In a move that feels both surprising and strangely overdue, DC Entertainment is going to release a line of comics that give new life to classic Hanna-Barbera cartoon properties, including Scooby-Doo, the Flintstones, Jonny Quest, Space Ghost, and Wacky Races. In an interview over at Entertainment Weekly, DC co-publisher Dan Didio said the mass reboot's goal is to "not just bring back versions that existed 40, 50 years ago and really look at it the way of saying, if these characters were created and interpreted today, how would they exist?" Not much is known about the content of the comics, but some of their titles suggest new slants on old concepts: Future Quest, Wacky Raceland, and, most eyebrow-raising of all, Scooby Apocalypse. And speaking of the apocalypse: A designer from Mad Max: Fury Road consulted on Wacky Raceland! The new slate is scheduled to launch in May and will feature...

Last night, Adult Swim's longest-running series aired its final episode, just a few hours after the debut of a show inspired by cable's most popular drama. That's how it's been with television this year: Each "welcome" alternates with yet another "we'll be seeing ya" ride off into the sunset. We barely have time to process our feelings about the departure of an old friend before we have to meet the new neighbors.
So in this installment of Rolling Stone's weekly appreciation of TV's best and most-talked-about, we'll be saying some more hellos,...

Each year, pop culture fans from around the world make their way to San Diego Comic-Con to bask in the glow of the largest convention of its kind, a singular experience that brings well over 100,000 people together to celebrate comics, film, TV, gaming, and much more. Most attendees differ in their primary interests, but one doesn’t make the trek to Sdcc without being a fan of something, and that shared enthusiasm is a big part of what brings people back again and again. This year, SoS’s Elizabeth Rico and Whitney McIntosh joined TV Editor Kate Kulzick at the Con.
Kate Kulzick: Another Sdcc has come and gone and finally, a week after it ended, I’ve recovered. It was an exhausting experience for me this year, and this was my fourth year attending—how was it for you guys? This was your first times, right?
Elizabeth Rico: Oh good,...

So I just got back from Awesome Con DC 2015, and happily, it lived up to its name once again, because it was pretty darned awesome!
It was also kind of interesting to realize that every year I’ve gone has been a different experience, thanks to what I was doing each year. The first year, which was of course also smaller than the current con, I was reporting for ComicMix but did not have any other responsibilities. That meant I had time to see pretty much all of the floor and meet any guests I’d like, plus doing great, longer-form interviews with the talented Phil Lamarr and Billy West. Last year, I was running programming, so I saw a whole lot of back hallways, the exhibit hall whooshing by at a fast clip several times as I hurried around, many great volunteers, and a few guests for just long...

Owens got his start working in radio stations throughout the Midwest and the South. He became a disc jockey in Los Angeles at Kfwb-am in 1961 and moved to Kmpc-am, where he worked for two decades. This week on The CW’s The Flash, as Central City weathered both a nasty cold front and a gnarly heat wave, the scarlet speedster (as well as Cisco) lent a helping hand. Meanwhile, Caitlin made a curious discovery about her “dead” fiance’s new name.
“Revenge of the Rogues,” perhaps more than any episode to date, played like a live-action comic book – which is a good, good thing. As previously chronicled on these pages, I’ve always been a fan of the comics’ Captain Cold, so every moment in which Wentworth Miller let loose with the cold gun was pure joy.

Banging a drum about stuff we love is more or less our remit on Den Of Geek - hence what many readers have started referring to as the ‘inexplicably regular' appearance of Statham, squirrels and Harold Bishop from Neighbours on these pages.
To that end then, we asked our writers which comedy shows (past and present, UK or otherwise, on TV, radio, or online…) deserved more praise, and here are the ones they chose. You might already like them too, or you might discover something new to dig out and enjoy. That’s the fun of it.

You just saw Interstellar. You have questions. It's almost impossible to watch Christopher Nolan's space epic without having one or two. Below are a bunch. About half of these could be considered plot holes. Others are more like plot contrivances, things that seemed slightly maddening despite possibly having some explanation within the story's layers of exposition. And while there was plenty to love and admire about this wildly ambitious and gorgeous film, it's also a tale where a man in space suit survived going into a black hole, communicated with himself back in time via a fifth dimensional library,...

At a loss for what to watch this week? From new DVDs and Blu-rays, to what's streaming on Netflix, we've got you covered.
New on DVD and Blu-ray
"Maleficent"
Angelina Jolie's delectably over the top performance as the Sleeping Beauty villain will suck you in to this surprisingly dark take on the fairy tale - dark for Disney, anyway. Elle Fanning co-stars as Aurora, the beautiful but cursed young princess who shows Maleficent the true meaning of love. Sam Riley puts on an entertaining show as Diaval, Malficent's transmogrifying raven.
"Hercules"
If you've been wondering what Brett Ratner's been up to lately, well, here's your answer. Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson pumped it up even more to play the mythic hero who is apparently now a mercenary for hire, along with a few other tough guys and one gal. If anything, take a gander at the fruit of Johnson's weight-lifting labor.

There was a certain point in history, somewhere between The Simpsons and Daria, when TV animation ceased to be the sole provenance of kids drooling over their morning bowls of Lucky Charms. These days, cartoons for grown-ups are not only ubiquitous, but hilariously twisted and high-quality to boot — and that's due in large part to a phenomenon called Adult Swim. What began as a freaky little block of late-night programming has evolved into a vast, even-freakier universe of animated and live-action series with a sardonic, absurdist sense of humor that's...

Twenty years ago this week, as the dust of the late-night talk show wars between Letterman and Leno had finally begun to settle, a familiar face came on the scene: Space Ghost. In 15-minute episodes that would have gone viral had anyone known what viral was back then, the Cartoon Network series (which eventually became the linchpin of the channel’s late-night programming block, Adult Swim) cast the stiff-as-a-board 1966 Hanna-Barbera action hero as a talk-show host, interviewing a roster of celebrities — some in on the joke, some very clearly not — in awkward, unforgettable segments that anticipated everything from Jimmy Fallon’s flop-sweat interview with Robert De Niro to President Obama’s appearance with Zach Galifianakis on "Between Two Ferns." And the show’s name rhymed, which was important.Largely absent from TV screens today — though Adult Swim ran an unannounced marathon of Space Ghost: Coast to Coast on April...
