Moody, Gloomy, Economically Told and Nearly Poetic

I decided to rent "End of August at the Hotel Ozone" when I saw a writer described it as 'Mad Max directed by Andrei Tarkovsky.' That description pretty much summarizes the film. It is as nihilistic as any of the Man Max films. It is also dawdling, overly studied, overly allegorical and nearly inscrutable. But it is an interesting movie. Today, it would be shot by someone like Von Trier, with a hand-held camera and using natural lighting. Schmidt conveys naturalism without having to resort to idiotic, amateurish gimmicks. The cast is merely okay with the exception of actress Ondrej Jariabek. She plays the leader of a female clan, and Jariabek has a very expressive face. The other ladies are obvious non-professional actors but their lack of experience is perfect for the kind of emotionless characters they are playing. It's relatively short -- under 80-minutes -- but the film is complex and fascinating. I'm glad I watched it.
