This film is part of The Criterion Collection and is included in its DVD box set "Eclipse Series #37: When Horror Came to Shochiku".
This was Shochiku's first giant monster film.
In the 1990s, after Nikkatsu (the studio responsible for another giant monster film titled Gappa the Triphibian Monster) went out of business, Shochiku supposedly announced a crossover film/sequel to that film and this one titled "Gappa vs. Guilala", which turned out to be a hoax. Guilala has since appeared in an American TV commercial and in a humorous sequel to this film.
