The success of this animated series with its musical numbers drew the attention of Hanna-Barbera Productions. Through the early 1970s, many of their series would have young characters with a rock band. As in this series, the musical sequences gave them the opportunity to use cycle animation. The cycle animation could be varied by simply re-shooting the cels over different backgrounds.
First Saturday morning cartoon show to use a laugh track.
The Archies were a totally fictitious group derived from this cartoon series. They were made up of studio musicians (including Ron Dante, Toni Wine, and Andy Kim). One of the songs from the show, "Sugar, Sugar" became a big pop hit and, more than 40 years later, is still a part of the normal rotation on "oldies" radio stations.
Unlike his comic book counterpart, the animated Archie does not have freckles, or the crisscross design in his hair.
