- [last lines]
- Dave: [after having been mortally hit by a car] Reality is a deadly place. I hope this trip is a good one.
- [dies]
- Preacher: Death - death is merely the instant passage to eternal being. A final escape from the travail that man has heaped upon himself. It is a loss only for the living. We who in our loneliness cherish his sweet memory. And now, while we celebrate his needless death, we celebrate the end of death! This glorious day when man has finally denied and revolt his right to assassinate. Denied and revolt his right to assassinate his fellow man.
- The Strawberry Alarm Clock: [singing] There's no place that can be better/When you're up in clouds forever/Pacify your mind with islands/Colored snow and green-field skies and/Poisoned dreams, distorted dreams, mushroom dreams/Rainy day mushroom pillow, rainy day mushroom pillow, rainy day mushroom pillow.
- Steve Davis: Hey, Warren, did you get my drums fixed?
- Warren: Yeah, man.
- Stoney: It don't sound so good without acid.
- Stoney: David, the acid has curdled and turned you sour.
- Dave: No, I'm afraid it's the sight of my friend, who will soon be up to his eyes in dollars and self-importance. Maybe I should cultivate him.
- Stoney: It's real good to see you in the daylight, though. I know you just crawled out of your hole to save my soul.
- Dave: Games again, Stoney. Could be you're starting to need things and starting to want things. What you don't want too much, they can't take away from you.
- Stoney: I don't need anything.
- Preacher: War, capital punishment, murder, highway slaughter are but memories of an inhuman age. An age before man discovered his primal urge and used it in the more creative act of love!
- Stoney: [talking in Dave's rooftop crash pad] Is love lesson number 1 over, man?
- Dave: All the games have to go, man. 'Cause it's all one big plastic hassle.
- Stoney: So live in a jelly jar.
- Dave: [gesturing] You see this little beam of light?
- [blocks the beam with his hand]
- Dave: Well, that's all there is. The rest is in your head.
- Stoney: Yeah, but, except we're in a box, on a roof, in San Francisco, in America.
- Dave: So it seems.
- [Warren, hallucinating due to a bad trip, has just tried to cut off his hand with a power saw]
- Jenny Davis: [upset] Why does he take that stuff?
- Stoney: [pausing for emphasis] Don't judge people, Jenny.
- [Stoney and his hippie band, Mumblin' Jim, have just left the stage]
- Dave: [offers Stoney a marijuana joint] Why so happy? Is it the fame or the fortune?
- Stoney: Oh man, Dave, you are relentless.
- Dave: Tell me your philosophy, Stoney. Let's talk about something important. What color Continental are you going to buy?
- Stoney: [putting Dave on] Cantaloupe, man.
- Dave: That's interesting. Uh... let me ask you this. How do you stand on monogrammed shirts?
- Stoney: Love 'em, man, love 'em. Wear 'em for underwear all the time, you know. Anything with my initials on it. Individual against the collective conforming society and all that.
- Dave: Hmm. Well, I don't care what your bag is man, as long as you're honest about what you want.
- Stoney: Well, I'm honest, Dave, very honest.
- Dave: Well, pretty soon, that little girl you're pretending not to notice, that one standing right there with her eyes full of love, pretty soon, you'll start worrying about whether you can afford her. And then it's buy now, pay later. 9 to 5 the rest of your life.
- Stoney: [being sarcastic] Pretty soon, the boogeyman'll get me.
- Dave: [to Jenny] You're looking lovely this morning, Jenny. Tell him I'm right. You're not one to play games. Tell him how it is.
- Jenny Davis: I'm just catching a bus.
- Stoney: Hey man, it's not money. It's life! I mean, it's human life. You don't invest it, you spend it. You know what I mean? It don't take acid to see that. All you got to do is know where your head is at.
- Stoney: You'll get picked up in five minutes if you don't get out of those square clothes.
- Jenny Davis: Well, I don't have very much money.
- Stoney: You don't need too much around here.
- Stoney: Wait a minute. Wait a minute. I didn't mean anything. I'm just curious. I mean, you don't have to answer to anybody in this scene. That's what its all about. You know? Everybody does his own thing. Okay?
- Ben: Jenny needs a place to stay and everybody seems to like her. I think - I think she ought to stay here.
- Elwood: Where? It's crowded enough right now.
- Ben: Well, old Stoney's got a bed all to himself.
- Elwood: Get outta here. You're going to scare him half to death. You know how Stoney is about chicks. He's a one-nighter. No involvements. No commitments.
- Warren: [using a power saw as a weapon and seeing Ben, Dave and Stoney as walking decaying zombie-like corpses because of hallucinations brought about by a bad trip] All right, now, you stay away! You stay away from me, please.
- Stoney: Warren, Warren, let us help you. Warren, whatever it is, it's in your mind. It isn't real. We're your friends.
- Stoney: We need you to play with us.
- Dave: You still playin' games, Stoney?
- Stoney: Since when is music a game? Playin' makes me feel good.
- Dave: So does a paycheck.
- Stoney: Oh, yeah. The old bad thing. The root of all evil, right?
- Dave: No. Not bad or good. There's only the truth.
- Stoney: The truth. Old black and whitey.
- Stoney: This is Jenny. She's deaf.
- Dave: She's lovely, man. You know, I like sound, but sometimes I prefer silence. Is she your chick?
- Stoney: Not really.
- Dave: No big thing?
- Stoney: I like her.
- Dave: Then, you don't mind if she stays here with me then?
- Stoney: Well, you know, that'd be up to her, wouldn't it?
- Dave: Still games.
- Thug: Well, look what I found. A real love child. Nice long hair. Oh, look at this pretty necklace of his.
- Dave: Listen, Stoney, what you really want is that little broad that just groped you. The one you made the date upstairs with. What you really want to do is go and do that. But here comes Jenny, so, what are you going to do? Are you going to be honest and tell her the truth? Or, why don't you tell her you have a meeting with your agent and you have to slip away. Or, tell her you love her. She'll never know. It's done all the time in straight circles.
- Dave: Why do people play games like that? Whether you make it with me or not, that's not the important thing. It's facing your appetites and your curiosity.
- Dave: Home of the truth and you go squares, Stoney.
- Stoney: Not at all, man! Not at all. Use the pad. Have a ball! I don't care and I'm sure the *bitch* doesn't mind. Do you, Jenny? Don't turn me off! I just want to tell you not to dirty the sheets until I get another chick to clean 'em, that's all.
- Dave: You're righteous, Stoney, but you're not very hip.
- Dave: Reality's a rotten place to be. Do you want a shot of this? There's enough in there for two trips.
