Robert Downey Jr. is the Oscar-winning actor and three-time nominee who has had his share of ups-and-downs. He’s been more in demand than ever lately thanks in large part to the highly popular “Avengers” series, in which he played billionaire superhero Tony Stark (aka Iron Man) to great acclaim. Tour through our photo gallery of his 21 greatest films, ranked from worst to best.
The son of underground filmmaker Robert Downey Sr. and actress Elsie Downey, he made his acting debut at age five in his father’s film “Pound” (1970). Long before he won the 2024 Best Supporting Actor Oscar for “Oppenheimer,” Robert Downey Jr. made his screen debut at age five in the experimental 1970 film “Pound,” which was directed by his father and co-starred his mother and sister. Upon clinching said prize, he emulated only three other men who were first honored by the academy at least half a century into their acting careers. Considering both male categories (and only counting credited roles in feature films), his waiting period of 54 years far exceeds the all-time average, which now stands at 19.5 years.
Although nearly two full decades separate their time-of-win ages (58 and 77), Downey came within five years of breaking John Gielgud’s general record for longest acting career preceding an Oscar victory. The English performer has held that distinction since 1982, when he was lauded for his supporting turn in “Arthur” 58 years after debuting in “Who Is the Man?” (1924). While no male...

Robert Downey Jr. will receive the Maltin Modern Master Award at the 39th annual Santa Barbara International Film Festival on Feb. 9.
The award is named after the film historian Leonard Maltin, who will lead an in-person discussion with Downey Jr. at the festival, where they will dig into the actor’s long career, including, of course, his turn in “Oppenheimer” as Lewis Strauss, the title character’s nemesis who tries to orchestrate his downfall.
“Oppenheimer” director Christopher Nolan said in a statement, “It’s thrilling to see audiences responding not just to Robert Downey Jr’s incredible charisma, but to a performance which, stripped of any movie star trappings, shows once again that he is one of the greatest actors.”

If there's one thing that you can say about Christopher Nolan's "Oppenheimer," it's that the three-hour historical epic about the father of the atomic bomb boasts an incredibly deep bench. Nolan packs the film with well-known and well-liked actors, with many big names seemingly happy to sign on for little more than a cameo if it let them be part of "Oppenheimer." But aside from the Matt Damons and Kenneth Branaghs, there's also a surprising number of cast members who began their careers as child stars.
Some came up during the mid-2000s golden age of the Disney Channel and Nickelodeon, while others date back decades earlier. Also, several have since gone on to lead well-developed and respected careers, while others are still in the process of proving themselves as adult actors in their own right. Whether they're child stars who audiences are surprised to see in grown-up roles,...

The Death Row catalog is back on streaming services one year after Snoop Dogg pulled the albums with the promise of building a platform of his own.
Led by Snoop’s first two albums, Doggystyle and Tha Doggfather, the groundbreaking Death Row catalog also boasts 2Pac’s All Eyez on Me and The Don Killuminati: The 7 Day Theory, as well as Tha Dogg Pound’s Dogg Food, Lady of Rage’s Necessary Roughness, and Kurupt’s Against the Grain. The classic soundtracks for Murder Was the Case, Above the Rim, and Gridlock’d are also included.
Last month, the label’s other magnum opus, Dr. Dre’s The Chronic, returned to streaming after its rights reverted back to Interscope Records. Meanwhile, the Death Row catalog was brought back after Snoop sold a stake in the label to former Apple Music executive Larry Jackson’s new music company gamma back in December.

Among all the diverse documentaries that had their premieres at this year’s Telluride Film Festival, Chris Smith’s Sr. stands as one of the most unique and affecting. The film is on one level a portrait of indie film pioneer Robert Downey Sr., who was part of the American New Wave that energized cinema in the late 1960s. But the film is also a loving tribute to a father by his very famous son, Robert Downey Jr., who participated in the filming with his wife and fellow producer, Susan Downey.
While the film chronicles Downey Sr.’s career and sometimes tumultuous personal life, it is also a poignant — if inevitably incomplete — father-son chronicle. Downey died last year from Parkinson’s Disease, and he was ill during much of the filming, so that adds an element of pathos that is never overstated.

After an eventful couple of weeks on “Big Brother 24,” this one is shaping up to be dull and straightforward as everyone scrambles to make final three and two deals.
Michael yet again won Veto, which was Bb Comics. He has now set a new record for most Veto wins in a season with six. Counting his three HOHs, he has nine comp wins overall, tying Janelle‘s record, and needs just one more win to stand alone. At this point, it would be shocking for him to lose a comp. He did not use the Veto on Monday, so Alyssa and Terrance remain on the block and the plan is still for Terrance to go. Monte, who is now Terrance’s new Daniel/Kyle, has been subtly trying to push for an Alyssa eviction, but numerous convos during the day reconfirmed Terrance should go since he’s better at comps than Alyssa is.

‘Sr.’ Review: Robert Downey Jr. Gets Vulnerable in This Oddball Collaboration With Cult Director Dad
Just how polished does a career-spanning documentary about the anarchic underground filmmaker behind “Greaser’s Palace” and “Putney Swope” need to be? If you’ve seen any of Robert Downey’s films, the answer is obviously: not very. You might even say, the scrappier the better. So goes the thinking behind “Sr.,” a loose seemingly seat-of-your-pants portrait of the antiestablishment director (perhaps best known for siring “Iron Man” star Robert Downey Jr.) that sneaks up on ya, emotionally speaking, seeing as how it doubles as a kind of farewell exercise between the two generations (plus grandson Exton) in the months before Downey succumbed to Parkinson’s Disease.
“Oddly, it’s sort of what your family does. You guys make art of your lives,” analyzes Junior’s therapist fairly late in the process, not long before dad’s passing. There’s no question that’s what’s really going on in an...

Whoever thought the sex tape scandal involving Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee would turn into a mini-series? Well, in the world of Hollywood, sex sells so in turn, it’s not too surprising that a mini-series explores the nature of such scandal. Pam & Tommy follows the relationship of the famous couple who got married after only knowing each other for 96 hours. The first episode is titled, Drilling and Pound, so it’s safe to say that this isn’t going to be a PG show that the whole family will enjoy. However, given the nature of the content, does Pam &

Robert Downey Sr. died at the age of 85 on July 6. His son, actor Robert Downey Jr., confirmed the news in a touching Instagram tribute on July 7. "Rip Bob D. Sr. 1936-2021 . . . Last night, dad passed peacefully in his sleep after years of enduring the ravages of Parkinson's," the Marvel star shared alongside a black and white photo of his father. "He was a true maverick filmmaker, and remained remarkably optimistic throughout . . . According to my stepmoms calculations, they were happily married for just over 2000 years. Rosemary Rogers-Downey, you are a saint, and our thoughts and prayers are with you."

Was Robert Downey Sr. the world’s greatest director? A bold claim for anybody, a very bold claim when the director in question hadn’t produced anything for decades. But there is a stretch from, let’s say, 1964 to 1975 where an output of shocking, anarchic, truly dangerous, and—let’s not lose the forest for the trees—fucking hilarious work does some rather heavy lifting. Babo 73, Chafed Elbows, Putney Swope, No More Excuses, Pound, Two Tons of Turquoise to Taos Tonight—I struggle to name someone who so fluidly mixed full-blown avant-garde with traditional film language, whose doing so imploded whatever seems possible or, more importantly, acceptable in cinematic and social terms.
The question comes to mind now that Downey Sr., at 85, has died a figure beloved but undervalued, if largely known for anything being the bearer of a large-looming Hollywood legacy. The answer, of course, is in watching the films themselves,...

Downey Sr. also acted, and directed several other films that gained a cult following. But 1969’s “Putney Swope” was given a mainstream release and thus exposed his work to a wider audience, which was shocked (even appalled) by much of what they saw at the time. The devastating satire of Madison Avenue follows what happens when an African American activist is given a free hand at an ad agency.
“Putney Swope” made New York Magazine’s list of 10 top films of the year.

The relationship between Robert Downey Jr. and Tom Holland may have started off as a fictional one between their characters in Captain America: Civil War, but the duo became firm friends off the screen as well, with the veteran actor finding himself as the fast-rising star’s mentor. That’s a hugely beneficial position for the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Peter Parker to be in, of course, because Rdj has seen and done it all at this point.
Having made his screen debut at the age of five in his father’s 1970 comedy Pound, Downey Jr. has clocked up half a century in the business, and he’s experienced the highs of rising through the ranks in his 20s and the lows of widely-publicized personal issues almost destroying his entire career, before ascending to the very summit of the Hollywood A-list thanks to his iconic role as Tony Stark.

Incredibly, this year marks the 50th anniversary of Robert Downey Jr.‘s first screen appearance in his father’s comedy Pound, and over the last half a century it would be fair to say the actor has experienced his fair share of ups and downs.
His journey has included a stint as a Saturday Night Live cast member, a run as the star of several teen comedies, a shift into more dramatic territory, a fall from grace that included multiple arrests, drug addiction, stints in rehab and prison time, and an acclaimed mini-resurgence on the small screen before he rose like a phoenix from the ashes to become one of the most famous, highest-paid and popular actors of the modern era thanks to his career-defining role as the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Tony Stark.

Robert Downey Jr. was born into the movie business and made his acting debut at the age of just five in his father’s film Pound all the way back in 1970, meaning that he’s already spent half a century in Hollywood. And while he might be considered one of the biggest stars in the industry thanks to his decade-long run as the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Tony Stark, it took him a long time to reach the very top of the A-list.
He’s always been regarded as one of the finest talents of his generation when he’s at the top of his game, and many thought he was poised to fully capitalize on that undoubted potential after he picked up the first Academy Award nomination of his career for playing the title role in Chaplin when he was still in his 20s.

So…what do I mean by “What the F**k?” Movies? These are the films that, upon completing your viewing, you seriously worry about the director’s sanity. Or you can’t really comprehend what you just saw. Or you know what you watched was something magical, but can’t really put the pieces together in your mind. Or, worse, you know what happened, but certifiably it’s insane. But with this “definition” comes a few caveats: no horror films and no fully animated films. Those genres lean a little too crazy to begin with – it’s more fun to look at films that force a sense of realism, even if it’s just on the surface.

"I have a brain tumor."
"It's all in your head."
What to make of Moment to Moment, Robert Downey's 1975 sketch-format feature film? Following in the wake of rather more professional, organized and (relatively) big budgets romps like Putney Swope, Pound and Greaser's Palace, it in a sense marks a step backwards to the shambling, purposeless derangement of Chafed Elbows (1966) and similarly centers around a series of deft and goofy comic performances from Downey's writing partner and muse Elsie (L.C.) Downey.
"Why don't you go outside and make a movie?"
"And ruin my skin?"
In a sense, this 85 minute affair, available in its original cut as an Avi ripped from a DVD-r ripped from VHS (until recently the fate of most of R.D.'s films), or in a new re-edit on the Eclipse Box Set Up All Night with Robert Downey Sr., can perhaps best be understood as...

TLC revisited the story of Dominique Lanoise with "600 Pound Mom: Race Against Time." She was still struggling with her weight, but wanted to get gastric bypass surgery to try and lose weight and save her life. The only problem was that doctors wanted to get her to 500 pounds before doing the surgery. Instead, Dominique continued to gain weight.
Believing her weight was killing her, doctors decided to go ahead with the procedure, despite her 689-pound mass. It was an incredibly risky surgery due to her size, but it was a successful one. Tragically, though, Dominique got sick and passed away just two weeks later.
"Dominique had great promise, and it was promised unfulfilled," her doctor said, while her six children simply said that they would miss the mother they had lost.

It really doesn't get more irreverent and outlandish than the cult films of Robert Downey Sr. and let's face it, every cinephile worth his salt loves an excuse to talk about the underground filmmaker's outré classic "Putney Swope."
And so one of the more strange and wonderfully offbeat box sets to come to DVD late last month was Criterion's Eclipse set dedicated to the unconventional works of Robert Downey Sr. titled, "Up All Night With Robert Downey Sr." The father of Robert Downey Jr. and a satirical, experimental and counter cultural filmmaker in New York in the late 1960s, many of Downey Sr.'s vehmently uncommercial and mischievous pictures have been virtually awol for decades outside of small, appreciative arthouses like New York's Anthology Film Archives.
Often featuring taboo and trangressive topics, shot on shoestring budgets (guerilla style without permits), utilizing non-actors, told with often whimsical aesthetics ("Chafed Elbows" is mostly visualized via 35 mm photographs,...

Robert Downey, Jr.'s first notable role came as a 20-year old during the 1985 season of "Saturday Night Live," which, as far as first roles go, is a sort of the worst possible thing with which to be associated. But his talent plentiful, he rebounded after that calamitous season -- that same year, featured in a number of Brat Pack films, including the lead in "The Pickup Artist" with Molly Ringwald -- and then a few years later came his true breakout part in "Less Than Zero."
A half decade later, he was up for his first Oscar, for "Chaplin," and the rest is history, with nearly two decades of top roles interrupted by a few years of drug problems.
What often goes unmentioned, however, is what came before the rehab, the glory and even the Live from New York. As the son of an avant garde filmmaker, Downey actually...

Hollywood – The 25th American Cinematheque Award will be presented to two-time Academy Award® nominee Robert Downey, Jr. at the Cinematheque’s annual benefit gala, American Cinematheque Board chairman Rick Nicita announced today. The presentation takes place Friday, October 14, 2011 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel’s International Ballroom in Beverly Hills.
“The American Cinematheque is extremely pleased to honor Robert Downey, Jr. as the 25th recipient of the American Cinematheque award at our celebration this year,” said Rick Nicita. “The pleasure that we receive from his charismatic and nuanced performances is matched only by the respect that he has earned for his personal and professional journey. The wide range of his talent has kept us enthralled in movies from a biopic like “Chaplin” to outrageous comedies like “Tropic Thunder” to franchises like “Sherlock Holmes” and, of course, “Iron Man.” While we have been enjoying him for years, it seems that he’s...

Turn That into Gel-Coat:
Cultural Reflections on Mad Men 4.07
by Pearson Moore
It is the most famous photograph in the history of sport.
But who knocked out Sonny Liston on May 25, 1965? The newspapers the next day said the victor was Cassius Clay. The man standing in the photograph simply referred to himself as "The Greatest". But his friends called him by the name we all know, the name he adopted fourteen months before: Muhammad Ali.
This week saw a cataclysmic fight. Not between Duck Phillips and Don. Not between Sonny Liston and Muhammad Ali. Not between Peggy Olson and Don. The fight this week was between Don Draper and Dick Whitman, and the clash occurred in the immediate vicinity of a frightening black box--the telephone on Don Draper's desk.
The winner, this week at least, was Dick Whitman. His prize was the offer he rejected five years before. But this...

Welcome to another batch of worthless yet seemingly entertaining batch of movie news/rumor stories that keep the blogosphere alive and well. We begin with a massive swarm of bees huddling over and around their queen at MGM Tower in Century City. Bzzzzzz. Next we have a quote from Robert Downey Jr. with regard to The Dark Knight that I am sure will gain the respect of many but will also set the actor in the sites of many a fanboy. Oh the line is drawn between Iron Man and Batman: "My whole thing is that that I saw 'The Dark Knight'. I feel like I'm dumb because I feel like I don't get how many things that are so smart. It's like a Ferrari engine of storytelling and script writing and I'm like, 'That's not my idea of what I want to see in a movie.
