TAKE A PAIR OF SPARKLING EYES

Beautiful film with tragic ending

Viewers who have seen 'Accident' (1967) will note more than a passing similarity to this film. Again the screenplay is written by Harold Pinter and the film is brilliantly directed by Joseph Losey, so you can look forward to a film with lots of long pauses and suggestion. The whole piece works brilliantly with juxtaposed images of the past and future. The fact that the film was made during what looks like a rare English heatwave adds to the discomfort of the situation. Basically, the daughter of a wealthy family, engaged to a peer, boshes a "local" farmer on the sly. What's bad about that you might say - well this apparently wasn't the done thing at the beginning of the century, particularly if you implicate an innocent child as a messenger service for the secret love trists, (The Go-Between, geddit?). The film is very twee and shows just how old fashioned England used to be. For instance, its considered very caddish to eat your porridge sitting down!!? Anyway there are good performances all round especially from the Pinter favorite, Alan Bates. You end up feeling very sorry for Leo who seems to be made to take the blame for everything, poor lamb. The film basically gives you the feeling that although everything seems peaceful and rosy, you know that something dreadful is going to happen at the end.
