still works after all these years

I believe I saw this when it was run as the "ABC Movie of the Week" and even though it doesn't have to power to wow me like it did when I was 13 or 14 it's still somewhat strange and creepy. Gargoyles, being the spawn of the devil and humans, hatch out every 600 years and now's the time, somewhere in the exact middle of nowhere, in the desert. A researcher and his daughter go to visit an old desert rat that has a roadside 'museum' and find he's got a skeleton of one of these things, and then of course the advance scouts are out to make sure nobody knows what they're up to. And they're up to hatching lots of gargoyle eggs in some cavern and bent on world domination, no matter what the head gargoyle says. This is kind of trashy fun made eerie by slow-motion camera work and the setting in general, so that all works rather well. The gargoyle costumes leave something to be desired in this day and age but you have to remember: this was 1972. It was pretty scary stuff then but kind of laughable now, but it's still a film worth seeing, especially if you like gargoyles. Oh, and look for an early appearance by Scott Glenn. 7 out of 10.
